Four Underwater Cities You Must Visit
Dwarka - India
Dwarka is located 70 feet under the sea near the inhabited island of Bet Dwarka. It was built sometime between 9000 and 12,000 years ago and those fortunate enough to visit can witness a diverse variety of buildings in addition to a seaport and protective walls made of sandstone. Furthermore, large stone anchors indicate that overseas trade took place in Dwarka during the Age of Antiquity all the way through medieval times.
Pavlopetri - Greece
Pavlopetri was founded around 5000 years ago, making it one of the oldest underwater lost cities in the world. Since it was rediscovered in 1967, archeologists and tourists alike have been fascinated by the well-preserved handicrafts. What makes Pavlopetri stick out is that it has a nearly - complete town plan, including at least 15 buildings. There is also evidence that it was once a major producer of textiles, with some of the equipment still complete!
Antirhodos - Egypt
This ancient underwater island was rediscovered in 1996 near the Alexandria harbor. In addition to being the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Ancient Wonders of the World that had been presumed (推测) lost forever, explorers can find a marble-floored 3rd century B.C.palace. The best thing is that the island is only a few meters under the water, which makes it easy to explore even for new divers!
Atlit - Yam - Israel
This underwater site was discovered in 1984 off the coast of Atlit near Haifa, and is estimated to have been settled between 6900 and 6300 B.C.This location offers the clearest evidence of where humans made the transition (过渡) from hunter-gatherers to settled farmers. Dive insurance is required, so make sure you are covered when you plan your trip.

B
When it comes to being fit and healthy, we're often reminded to aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. This can annoy many, especially when we're busy with work and other commitments---and yet where did this number actually come from
The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called "Manpo-kei", which translates to "10,000 steps meter". This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. It's even included in daily activity targets by popular smartwatches, such as Fitbit.
Research has since investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, around 4.400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it's uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it's one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.
Recent research at the University of Texas has also demonstrated that if you're walking fewer than 5,000 steps a day, your body is less able to metabolize(新陈代谢) fat the following day. A buildup of fat in the body can also increase a person's likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is further supported by previous research which shows people who walked less than 4,000 steps a day could not change this decreased fat metabolism.
If you want to increase how many steps you get daily, or simply want to move more, one easy way includes walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you're working from home. Meeting with friends for a walk --- rather than in a cafe or pub --- can also be useful.
24.What does the author think of the 10,000 steps per day
A.It is an upsetting target to achieve.
B.It is likely to go out of style quickly.
C.It is a rising tendency of mental health
D.It is effective in reducing pressure on work.
25.What does research from the Harvard Medical School suggest about the target
A.It matters as much as 7500 steps a day.
B.The more steps, the lower risk of death.
C.A bit more than the target can improve health.
D.About half that target appears to be beneficial.
26.What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A.Absence of previous research.
B.Recent findings of fat buildup.
C.Problems of less daily walking.
D.Possible causes of physical challenges.
27.Which of the following is one of the suggested ways according to the passage
A.Working at home.
B.Treating friends in a cafe or pub.
C.Driving lo work.
D.Signing up for online exercise programs.

For the first few months of 2021, Mars was crowded with new “visitors” from Earth. First, it was the UAE Space Agency’s Hope, followed by the Chinese Tianwen-1. The name comes from the long poem Tianwen, written by Qu Yuan, a great poet of ancient China. In Tianwen, this name conveys China’s steady effort in pursuing truth and culture of exploring the universe.
The Tianwen-1 rover landing has orbiting, landing and roving (巡视) components—the first mission to include all three on its first attempt. Landing on Mars is extremely dangerous. It requires entering the atmosphere at very high speeds, then slowing down before landing. As to Tianwen-1, a heat shield (防热护罩) protected the spacecraft during the fiery (燃烧的) landing, after which the mission safely parachuted (使空降) down to the Utopia Planitia (乌托邦平原). The landing platform fired small, downward-facing rocket engines to slow down during the last few seconds.
China’s Mars rover, called Zhurong after an ancient Chinese fire god, sent back images of the surface of Mars captured by a camera on its front, which functions as an “eye” to detect barriers and get around them. The Utopia Planitia, where Tianwen-1 landed, has long been believed to contain vast amounts of water ice. Zhurong will first and foremost study Martian soil and atmosphere and search for signs of water ice, which suggests the existence of life.
Tianwen-1 is China’s first interplanetary (行星间的) mission. Meanwhile, China is working with Russia on a sample-return mission scheduled to launch in 2024. China is open and inclusive in the development of its space technology to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
28.Why was China’s “visitor” to Mars named Tianwen
A.To emphasize the value of exploring Mars.
B.To arouse readers’ interest in reading classics.
C.To illustrate the long history of writing poems.
D.To show China’s constant struggle in space exploration.
29.Which of the following contributed to the safe landing on Mars
A.The heat shield on the spacecraft.
B.The camera on the front of Zhurong.
C.The flat landscape of the Utopia Planitia.
D.The rocket engines above the landing platform.
30.What is the primary target of Zhurong on Mars
A.To build a shared future for mankind.
B.To look for signs of life on the red planet.
C.To push the boundaries of space exploration.
D.To inform people of our achievements in space.
31.What can we learn from the text
A.China is the first country to land a rover on Mars.
B.China is confident of the existence of life on Mars.
C.Tianwen-1 proves joint efforts matter in space research.
D.Tianwen-1 marks the start of China’s interplanetary exploration.

We're all familiar with migration(迁徙): Wildebeests dash across Africa, Monarch butterflies fly across the Americas...but did you know that forests migrate, too
In his new book The Journeys of Trees, science writer Zach St. George explores an extremely slow migration, as forests creep inch by inch to more pleasant places.
“The migration of a forest is just many trees sprouting(发芽)in the same direction,” St. George writes. “Through the fossils that ancient forests left behind, scientists can track their movement over thousands of years. They move back and forth across continents, sometimes following the same route more than once, like migrating birds or whales.” This has happened over thousands of years, and climate change tends to be the driving force.
Of course, today, climate change is speeding up, and trees can't keep pace. Take California: it's getting hotter and dryer and scientists estimate that before too long, Sequoia National Park may not be able to keep giant sequoias(巨杉).
“The scientists there had never seen anything like it,” St. George says. “They worried, and I think at some point we will lose these ancient trees and we will have to think about what we do with the places, and do we plant new groves where they are easy to grow ”
This is known as “assisted migration”—humans planting trees in other places where they're more likely to flourish. But this process carries risks—people can accidentally introduce insects and diseases to new places, where they may wipe out entire native populations. So, St. George writes, there's a debate among conservationists and foresters today: Should humans help the trees escape
“There may be cases where people are probably going to step in and help species move to places where they'll be more suitable in the future,” St. George says. “So far, there are no huge movements of citizen groups moving trees north. But that is kind of one vision of the future that the people I interview sort of hope to see.”
32.What can be learned about the migration of a forest
A.It is mainly the result of climate change.
B.It often follows certain migrating species.
C.It takes thousands of years to complete.
D.It is very difficult to track the migration.
33.Why does the author mention Sequoia National Park
A.To stress the Park are facing a severe situation.
B.To show trees fail to adapt to the climate change.
C.To prove the assisted migration carries risks.
D.To state scientists are hopeful about the environment.
34.What does the underlined word “flourish” in paragraph 6 mean
A.Become valuable. B.Develop rapidly.
C.Grow well. D.Escape disease.
35.What's St. George's attitude towards helping the trees escape
A.Skeptical. B.Supportive.
C.Objective. D.Disapproving.

It’s up to parents and coaches to help kids draw out life lessons from sports. Sometimes we think kids will simply absorb the lessons that are obvious to us as adults. 36. Here’s a parent’s guide to watching the Olympics with your kids.
37.If you see poor sportsmanship, you might ask, “What would you have done differently there ” On the more positive side, we often see Olympians thanking the officials after a competition. It can be a wonderful time to remind our kids to thank people who often go under-appreciated, such as food servers, bus drivers, and teachers.
We often see Olympians picking up their teammates and perhaps even an opponent after a loss or disappointing performance. Talk with your kids about times when their classmates, friends and/or teammates are down and what they can specifically do to pick them up. 38.
Also keep a close eye on the medal ceremonies. 39. For example, if a sorely disappointed Silver medalist can overcome narrowly missing Gold and share sincere congratulations that is an opportunity to talk with kids about times they were disappointed with an outcome.
One last thing to keep in mind is the Olympic motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” But why is this not “Fastest, Highest, Strongest ” 40. This is a huge lesson for our kids. In life, our focus should be on giving our own best personal performance — comparing ourselves to ourselves, not just to those around us.
A.But that is not often the case.
B.Kids will learn a lot from the Olympics.
C.Keep your eye out for both positive and negative life lessons.
D.This might be in the middle of a performance or just after it’s over.
E.The reason is that the Olympic spirit calls on athletes to achieve excellence.
F.Use the sports you watch on the Olympics to encourage your child to get fit.
G.That’s when you’ll see the opportunity for life lessons in winning and losing gracefully.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Paula is a 55-year-old woman living in New Jersey. She lives a happy life without concern for financial or social problems and she constantly shares laughs with her family and friends. About ten years ago, her husband Michael gave her a gold ring with a diamond in it on their 20th wedding anniversary. She cherished it very much and wore it every day.
Having been married for almost 30 years, Paula had everything set for herself, and knew that her life in New Jersey was a thrilling one. One day, Paula was in the bathroom cleaning everything up, from the sink to the floor. She wanted to keep her house clean and beautiful. As soon as Paula finished washing the bathtub, she moved on to the part she feared most: the toilet. Wanting to get it out of the way, she quickly cleaned the inside of the toilet with a brush, and flushed (冲走) the soap away. After finishing, she felt there was something wrong, but she couldn’t think of what it was.
Paula’s heart skipped a beat when she noticed that her left ring finger felt a bit lighter. She slowly looked down at her ring finger, hoping that her treasured anniversary gift was still on it. She was frightened to see that it was lost. She didn’t notice that she flushed it down the toilet.
Paula said, “I must have flushed it down. It had been a little big on my finger, because it was winter time and my hands were smaller. I felt so bad about it. Sad and embarrassed.”
She couldn’t believe that she just let thousands of dollars go down the drain (下水道),literally. She searched the bathroom and even the house, hoping that she just dropped it somewhere and forgot about it. She even took apart the toilet and searched the inside pipes with a flashlight, but in vain. Paula had no idea how to explain this to her husband. To buy the ring, Michael worked extra hard before the anniversary, so to tell him the bad news was unimaginable for Paula.

My Favourite Sports
Influenced by my parents, I gradually fell in love with running. Every morning I run happily with the sun rising, sweat streaming down my cheeks. In order to push the boundary of my strength, I participated in the marathon held in our city as an amateur and ranked tenth. My friends all applauded me for my courage.
Not only does running give me a healthy constitution, but I also have developed an optimistic attitude towards life. Besides, it is a good way to make friends with some fellow runners.
Therefore, I’m calling on you to join me in running.
67.Paragraph 1:
She softly knocked on the door to their bedroom. When she came in, she saw Michael reading his favorite book on the bed. Visibly sweaty and nervous, Paula said that she had bad news to tell him. Michael was worried, but listened. With her eyes looking away from embarrassment, Paula cried and told her husband the ring was flushed down the toilet. Paula had mentally prepared herself for what could possibly be the toughest conversation with her husband ever. But Michael was quiet through the entire explanation, and this put Paula off.
Paragraph 2:
After finishing her explanation, Paula wiped away her tears and waited for Michael to say something. She thought he would get mad at her. However, Michael’s face didn’t show any anger. Suddenly, he interrupted the silence by giving her a hug. Paula was completely shocked by Michael’s reaction to the situation. After all, she lost the ring he gave her to celebrate their anniversary. Michael told Paula that he would buy her another ring, exactly like the one she lost. Paula felt greatly moved.
