Nearly all of us have a bad habit, whether we know it or not. Some people say they want to get rid of it but don’t know the proper ways. Here’s some advice on how to get rid of bad habits.
Make a list. Write down why you want to stop a certain behavior, how it’s hurting you and how to get rid of it. This will help a lot. Look at that list regularly.
Join in other activities. It’s wise of you to do something else when you want to stop your bad habits. If you get angry easily, for example, you can practice having a deep breath or going for a walk.
Give yourself a present. Before you take action against a bad habit, decide what you’ll do to celebrate it if you reach your goal.
Keep off bad habits. If you are fat and want to lose weight, keep junk food out of your house. If you are a heavy smoker with coffee, turn to tea and keep away from friends who like smoking.
Be patient. Bad habits develop over years, so you probably won’t be able to get rid of them quickly. In fact, people often give up several times before being successful, so you should be patient.
Find support. Don’t be afraid to ask for support from friends, family or other people who have the same bad habits as you. When you talk to others, they might be able to provide advice or encouragement that you usually wouldn’t get from yourself.
1. If you want to lose weight, you should ______.
A. drink more coffee. B. refuse the junk food.
C. find support from friends. D. find a heavy smoker.
2. Which of the following is WRONG according to the passage
A. it’s not easy to get rid of bad habits in a short time.
B. You can write down the reasons for getting rid of bad habits.
C. When talking to others, you can get what you can’t get from yourself.
D. When you want to stop your bad habits, don’t do anything.
3. From the passage you can learn ______.
A. how to get rid of bad habits. B. why we have some bad habits.
C. what to do to have a bad habit. D. where to find some support

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher, Will. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar (化身) that turns up on the students’ desktop, tablet, or smartphone screen when called.
Thanks to a digital camera and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal signals. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way communication not only helps draw the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their involvement (参与) and make changes if needed.
Vector’s Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to attract the attention of the next generation. He says, “Using a digital human is a very popular method to deliver new information to people, and I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver rich and educational experience in the future.” Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer for Soul Machines, states that kids who have grown up in this digital time adapt to new technology quickly, and he hopes to develop the idea of digital humans in the area of education further.
The program in place since August 2018, has been a great success so far. However, no matter how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one, the avatar’s knowledge base is severely limited. But more importantly, even the smartest digital avatars could never predict and react to all the unexpected situations that educators have to deal with on a daily basis. However, it could come in handy as a “personal teacher”, providing kids with one-on-one help on the subjects or even topics.
4. What is mentioned about Will in the first paragraph
A. He is unlikely to replace human educators.
B. He is the first robot teacher in the world.
C. He will walk across the classroom to you when called.
D. He is a digital teacher teaching in a school.
5. In what way does the digital teacher help the students
A. By taking part in discussion. B. By communicating with students.
C. By changing teaching methods. D. By monitoring students’ behavior.
6. What is Greg Cross’s attitude toward the digital teacher
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring.
C. Supportive D. Dissatisfied.
7. What can be inferred about the digital teacher from the last paragraph
A. It has entered many homes as kids’ private teacher.
B. It will teach in class in place of human educators.
C. It’s good at handling unexpected situations.
D. It remains to be improved.
D 5. B 6. C 7. D

As the President of Ariel Investments, I am often asked how to cultivate (培养) green hands to be qualified for a new job within a short time. My memories take me straight back to the days when I worked for John W. Rogers.
While in college, I worked as an intern (实习生) at Ariel Investments. As the youngest girl of six kids from a single mom, I had very little knowledge of the business world. When I graduated, I decided to return to the company to improve myself.
At the age of 22, my perspective was greatly influenced by lunching with the company’s founder and then-president, John W. Rogers. He told me that I would often find myself in the company of rich and successful people with big titles, lots of degrees and lots of experience. And yet, my ideas could still be as good or even better, he said. This early advice became the guiding force that has helped me throughout my entire career. When I was starting out, I thought my inexperience was holding me back, but John said that it was a good thing. He told me that being inexperienced means that you have a fresh point of view.
As my tutor, John encouraged me to be brave. As my boss, he took some giant leaps of faith to support me. Because of our first lunch and the years of support that followed, I never thought twice about speaking up, raising my hand or taking a seat at the table. Staying in the background was never a choice. But John’s advice came with one important warning. I needed to control my attitude. It’s one thing to be firm but quite another to be rude. Similarly, there is a fine line between confidence and overconfidence. With that in mind, I have had to learn to balance the way I act around others. As someone once told me, “the goal is to be non-threatened and non-threatening at the same time.”
8. What can we learn about the author from the text
A. She went to Ariel Investments after graduation for practice.

9. Due to John W. Rogers’ advice, the author ________.
A. learned to strike a balance between work and life
B. no longer felt lost and became aware of her own value
C. contributed her ideas only after listening to others’
D. went to a different company to display her talent
10. What important lesson does the author learn from his experience
A. Encourage Your Employees to Grow.
B. Keep Your Attitude under Control.
C. Let Your Success Be Your Noise.
D. Live a Life with a High Goal.
11. Who would probably benefit most from this article
A. Company bosses. B. Experienced teammates.
C. Business consultants (顾问) D. Those new to a job.
B 9. B 10. B 11. D

People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over the counter medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗) like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it.
So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it's easy to believe it's medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported.
It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figure out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒) A and B. But they didn't find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against rhinovirus C.
''This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinoviruses,'' study leader Professor Ann C. Palmenberg at the University of Wiscons in Madison, US, told Science Daily.
Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly detailed 3D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses.
With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don't really work.
12. What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold
A. They are quite effective. B. They are slightly helpful.
C. They actually have no effect. D. They still need to be improved.
13. How do antiviral drugs work
A. By breaking up cold viruses directly.
B. By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.
C. By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases.
D. By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.
14. What can we infer from the passage
A. The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.
B. Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.
C. Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently.
D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.
15. What is the best title for this passage
A. Drugs against cold viruses B. Helpful home remedies
C. No current cure for common cold D. Research on cold viruses
C 13. B 14. D 15. C

根据文章第三段的“To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw (拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.” D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.(了解感冒病毒的结构是开发有效治愈方法的关键)符合以上说法,故选D项。

根据上文“Realizing your dreams is not a matter of possibility; it’s a matter of motivating yourself to focus on the right things. You know you should be doing something, but sometimes you just don’t feel like doing anything.(实现你的梦想不是一个可能的问题,这是一个激励你自己去关注正确的事情的问题。你知道你应该做点什么,但有时你就是不想做任何事)”以及后文“Here are some daily motivation tricks that might work for you. (下面是一些可能对你有用的日常激励技巧)”可知,上文提到想实现梦想但就是任何事都不想做,即不采取行动,故本句承接上文说明这一行为造成的影响。上文中don’t feel like doing anything与D选项中don’t take action相对应。
根据上文“Reading more about motivation won’t help. Reviewing your to-do lists won’t help.( 多读些关于激励的书是没有用的。回顾你的待办事项清单是没有用的)”以及后文“So stop thinking about how hard the task is going to be or how long it’s going to take you. Tell yourself, ‘As soon as I get going, I’ll feel more motivated.’(所以不要再去想这个任务到底有多难,或者要花多长时间。告诉自己:“只要我开始行动,我就会感到更有动力。”)”可知,上文列举了对实现梦想没有用的事情,后文提到开始行动,故本句应当是说明真正能起作用的事情。故B选项“只有行动才能让一切顺利进行”符合语境,故选B。
【18题详解】
根据后文“You have the choice to replace negative self-talk with a more encouraging and friendly voice. A voice that does not look at the possibility of success before taking action, but rather uses self-belief as its driving force; A voice that all things are possible to those who commit to their dream.(可以选择用一种更鼓励和友好的声音来代替消极的自我对话。一个在采取行动前不考虑成功可能性的声音,而是以自信为动力的声音;对那些致力于自己梦想的人来说,一切皆有可能)”可知,本段主要是在说明自我对话和保持自信对实现梦想的重要性,后文中self-talk和self-belief可与C选项中self-talk和confident相对应。故C选项“注意你的自我对话,保持自信”符合语境,故选C。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Think about it. Write down your past successes.(想一想。写下你过去的成功)”可知,本句承接上文继续说明用什么方式来记录下自己的成功。上文中past successes与F选项中相对应them。故F选项“考虑用日记来记录它们”符合语境,故选F。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Accept failure as a positive learning experience and judge unsuccessful work and mistakes as part of the growth process. When times get tough, take a deep breath, and know that most great things come when you least expect it. Being defeated is a temporary condition; giving up is what makes it permanent.(将失败视为一种积极的学习经验,将不成功的工作和错误视为成长过程的一部分。当生活变得艰难的时候,深呼吸,要知道大多数伟大的事情都是在你最意外的时候出现的。被打败是暂时的,放弃是永恒的)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,上文提到放弃,上文中giving up 可与G选项中most people that gave up 相对应。故G选项“大多数放弃的人没有意识到他们离成功有多近”符合语境,故选G。

The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success so far.
C

People have different ways of dealing with a common cold Some take over the counter medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗) like herbal tea or chicken soup.
