This is a story about two wise men—Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu. The Chinese people have told it for many, many years.
One day, Zhou Yu gave Zhuge Liang an impossible task. He asked him to make 100,000 arrows within ten days. ‘‘No problem,’’ Zhuge Liang said. ‘‘I’ll bring you 100,000 arrows in there days.’’
Zhuge Liang asked his soldiers to fill 20 large boats with many straw men. In the early morning of the third day, Zhuge Liang’s soldiers sailed the boats towards the camps of Cao Cao’s army on the other side of the river. The soldiers shouted and best their drums loudly.

The story of 100,000 arrows
When Cao Cao’s soldiers heard the sound, they thought they were under attack. However, they could not see through the thick fog on the river. Cao Cao ordered his soldiers to shoot arrows towards the sounds of the drums and the shouting. Zhuge Liang’s boats were soon full of arrows.
Zhuge Liang’s soldiers then turned the boats around and shouted, “Thank you for your arrows, Cao Cao.’’
Zhuge Liang took all these arrows to Zhou Yu. There were more than 100,000 of them.

A road is a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been a bridge between the East and the West for more than 2,000 years. But do you know the Silk Road is not a single route
It is a series of trade and cultural transmission(传送)routes. It began during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route starts from the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi Province and ends in Eastern Europe, near today’ Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road was about 6,500 kilometres long. It went across 25% of the planet.
The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Besides silk, jade and iron went West to Rome. From the west came glass, jewels, and food like carrots and sesame. The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. Besides trade, knowledge about science, arts and technologies was shared across the Silk Roads. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, people around the world travel in the places along the Silk Road, such as the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an and Mogao Grottoes(莫高窟)in Dunhuang, Gansu. Now, beginning in August, a new train line, the New Orient Express, runs from Beijing across the Silk Road.

They are our time machines, taking us back to the days of ancient history. They are both man-made and natural. They include things like the Grand Canyon (峡谷), the Great Wall of China, and the Tango dance of Argentina. We call these things world heritage (遗产).
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, 联合国教科文组织) began the World Heritage List in 1972 when it passed the World Heritage Convention (《世界遗产公约》). The goal of the Convention is to encourage countries to protect natural and cultural sites of world heritage.
What is heritage Heritage is our word for all the things our past has given to us. Heritage lets us learn about the many lives, civilizations (文明), and earth movements that came before us.
UNESCO puts heritage items into three types: natural, cultural and intangible.
Natural heritage items are amazing things we find in nature, like the Great Barrier Reef (大堡礁) in Australia or the Amazon in Brazil. The rainforests in the Amazon, for example, have many different types of life in them, including animals that can be found nowhere else.
Cultural heritage items are man-made things that show the culture of a country or people. Places like Machu Pichu of ancient Peru and the Palace of Versailles (凡尔赛宫) reflect a particular moment in history. They tell us as much about the past as a history book.
Intangible heritage is called “intangible” because it is more difficult to see or touch. It often refers to things people do, not make. For example, the Mediterranean diet (地中海饮食) can teach us many things about civilization, just as the city of Venice can.
Whatever form it takes, it is good to know our world heritage is protected for generations to come.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid?
