On July 17,2017, Olympic diver Greg Louganis and his birth father, Fouvale Lutu, finally wrapped their arms around each other in their first official fatherson hug.“It was just meant to be,” Louganis said of joining his father in Honolulu for an extended Lutu family reunion.“It's so wonderful to have him with us,”said Lutu, whose three other children were also in attendance.“And this is more of a beginning,”added Louganis.
But the fourday celebration also marked the conclusion of an emotional lifelong journey for Louganis, who was put up for adoption as a baby and struggled for years with the feeling that his biological parents never loved him.His adoptive parents were always open with him about that. But the adoption organization had lost Louganis's files in a fire, and unanswered questions led to troubled times for the young athlete.Later, Louganis got to know his biological parents had been young and had no choice in giving him up for adoption.“That kind of helped ease the question of whether I was loved,”he said.
Feeling more “at peace” about his family, Louganis turned his focus to diving.By the time he was 28, he'd become a fourtime Olympic gold medalist.Among his biggest fans was Lutu, who for years had quietly followed his son's life from afar. Then in 1984, Lutu decided to meet him when Louganis was in Honolulu.
Facetoface with his son for the first time, Lutu was emotional.“Like me, he's a man of few words. But he told me he'd wanted to raise me,”said Louganis.Despite his skepticism, Louganis continued to meet with Lutu.“He never asked for anything,” said Louganis.“He just wanted to know if I was okay and that I was happy.”
The reunion gave Louganis a lot to look forward to.“I have family there,”he said, almost in disbelief.“It's an incredible gift that I've been given.”

In a new study, researchers analyzed information from more than 18, 000 people who provided blood samples.Participants reported whether they exercised regularly, and if so, what type of exercises they typically did.The researchers then scanned participants' blood, looking for genes (基因) that are tied to an increased risk of obesity (肥胖).Next, the researchers examined whether certain exercises seemed to balance this risk.
Overall, people who reported doing any type of regular exercises tended to have a lower BMI (体重指数) than those who didn't.This was true even among people who were genetically easy to become overweight. But one exercise stood out as the one with the strongest antiobesity effect:jogging.Participants with obesity genes who jogged tended to have a lower BMI than people with similar genetic risk who did not jog.
But for those who loathe jogging, fear not:Five other types of exercises were also tied to a lower BMI among individuals at risk for obesity. These included mountain climbing, ballroom dancing and walking. The benefits of these exercises were the biggest among those with the greatest genetic risk of obesity.
Interestingly, several other types of exercises failed to counteract the genetic risk of obesity. These included cycling, stretching exercises and swimming. The findings don't mean that these latter exercises can't help with weight control. It's just that they didn't seem to counteract the genetic tendency to gain weight.
There could be several reasons for this. The researchers noted that, for the average Joe or Jane, cycling and stretching exercises tend to require less energy than the exercises that were tied to a lower obesity risk.In addition, exercising in water, as happens with swimming, may increase appetite.
