Kites have been around for thousands of years. The ancient books show that Chinese people started kite flying 2000 years ago. Its name came from a kind of bird called kite.
Simple kites are made by two crossing sticks and covered with paper or cloth, with a string at the end. More expensive kites have frames(框)that are made of plastic or other material. Kites are made in many different sizes, colors and shapes. A flat(平的)kite is the oldest and simplest type of kite. It flies because air goes over and under the kite. The pressure(大气压力)under the kite is higher than the pressure over it. It helps the kite fly in the sky.
Kites have also been used in experiments. Early scientists sent kites up into the air to study the temperature of the air at different heights. In 1752,Benjamin Franklin used a kite to prove that lightning was a type of electricity. He connected a metal key with the string of a kite. When lightning hit the kite, electricity passed down the string and Franklin got an electric shock. He was very lucky to live on.
Kites were also used to develop airplanes. The Wright Brothers experimented with kites before they flew the first airplane. In the past kites were also used to take pictures in wars.
