Researchers at the University of Chicago have trained an artificial intelligence system to write fake(虚假的)reviews on Yelp,a website showing customers reviews on shopping or something else, and it’s pretty hard to tell them apart from a human review.
Their study, which will be presented at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security in October, aimed to stress how easily these systems can write reviews like humans and how damaging they can become if they’re not monitored properly.
Since many small businesses rely on online reviews to help grow and keep their reputation,a future where someone—like a rival or angry customer—could crazily fill their page with negative reviews written by a machine is pretty worrying.
And,according to the research team, the threat goes far beyond a bunch of fake reviews on Yelp.“In general the threat is bigger,” Ben Y.Zhao, one of the authors of the study, said.“I think the threat towards society is large and it really misleads users and shakes our belief in what is real and what is not.I think that’s going to be even unimaginable.”
To test how believable these reviews came across, the researchers invited 40 volunteers and had AI generate five fake reviews for 40 actual restaurants. The volunteers were asked how useful they thought the reviews were and whether or not they thought they were fake. The AI reviews ranked as “effectively indistinguishable” from real reviews, according to the study.Further, the fake reviews were given a 3.15 “usefulness” rating, compared to a 3.28 rating for human reviews.

A.A person who respects you deeply.
B.A person who competes with you.
C.A person who loves to give fake reviews.
D.A person who can control you from a distance.
3.What can we infer from Ben Y.Zhao’s remarks
A.Artificial intelligence can put the society in danger.
B.The artificial intelligence is only used by the researchers.
C.Ben Y.Zhao is optimistic about the further development of artificial intelligence.
D.The artificial intelligence will help people shake.

Life Back on Earth
It is 7 am in the morning and the alarm reminds me once again to prepare for the school. It is a beautiful day with clear sky and lots of bright sunshine. But I don’t have time to soak into this because my school vehicle will come sharp at 8 and in case I miss,my parent will give me a beating. So better run.
My school bus just took off and drove past the residential towers. It takes only 5 minutes to reach the school where each of us will have designated routines to follow and any deviation will be caught on CCTV and reported back to my parents online on their desk. After all,it is the year 2300.
Oh yes!We are the 4th generation people living on Europa in a habitable space which has been created specifically for us by man in the 22nd century. The earth became dangerous for living due to increasing pollution which our forefathers created and hence mankind had to look for other places for a living. All over the world,a handful of people were selected and my great grandparents travelled all the way to this place to continue a life.
It is 12 pm and lunchtime.Today we were served some delicious cream and chocolates. These are made on planet Mars these days and brought here directly.I am feeling a little sleepy but my robotic teacher won’t give me a break and also our results will be out today.I am feeling a little tensed.
Oh my God!I have come first in my class, feeling over the moon(Or,over the Europa). And,you won’t believe me-I have got a chance to visit the earth along with others on a day trip.I am so excited about the trip and my parents are equally so.I am carrying my latest camera to catch every moment of the journey.
Finally we are on the earth after the 4 hours’ journey and we are in our organo-synthetic suit to protect against the harmful environment where once mankind took their first breath.

There are still some colonies of humans spreading across the globe mostly in the triangular land mass (historians say it Africa)and I am very eager to see them closely.Upon arrival,we found ourselves deep in hazy atmosphere, which,as my robot guide tells me,is the result of air pollution. We were almost out of breath,so we had to look for some places where we could breathe. How could mankind survive here I wondered.Luckily,we escaped and landed near a school, where some crazy kids are running around a ball on an open ground, shouting “Goal,Goal,Goal” all the time.My robot guide told me that it was called “football”.The most popular game on the earth I thought of my game of “Alien Invasion” which is more exciting. Then we continued our trip...
It is getting darker and we had to go back. While back,I still thought about the air pollution, the dirty water, the bare land on the earth.I can’t understand why mankind didn’t care about their home.Though I carried my camera,I took few pictures. The journey to the earth made me sad for those who live in that place.Unit 2-Section A Reading and Thinking

Growing up in America,I enjoyed the convenience of eating the most attractive,well-packaged foods of the 20th century, including all the candies we often see near the cash register.During those times I wasn’t aware how bad sugar was,and in fact, neither was anyone around me.So I continued to spread jam on my toast and eat ice cream daily.
Strangely enough,I felt that sweet was some sort of wonderful drug which gave me the energy to function properly,to feel good and to perform at my best, all of which seemed necessary for growth. So why should I avoid it
Years later, huge food companies, like General Mills and Post, began pumping more sugar into their products, and then more and more people appeared with bigger bellies(腹部).It finally came to my awareness that our society was becoming more miserable and unfit. And from what From sugar!I began to do some research into sugar and what it did exactly to our bodies. To my amazement,I found its damage was just as bad as,if not worse than, what alcohol and cigarettes brought about. You see, when you take in more sugar than you need or burn, your body and brain become over-active.This,in effect, causes your cognitive(认知的) abilities to slow down, your mood to get to the extremes, your skin to age faster, your blood to become thicker and your liver and kidneys to be worn out.
But what surprised me most, out of all of these horrible side effects, was that sugar adds extra pounds to your waistline, even if you do exercise regularly. And what I’ve always wanted, for the past few years,is to remove that extra fat around my belly so that I could finally see my abs(腹肌).
I just didn’t know, this whole time, what damage I had been doing to myself and my dreams, but I knew I had to do something I had never done before.

Houses have been getting progressively “smarter” for decades, but the next generation of smart homes may offer what two Case Western Reserve University scientists are calling an “Internet of Ears”.
Today’s smart home features appliances, entertainment systems, security cameras and lighting, heating and cooling systems that are connected to each other and the Internet. They can be accessed and controlled remotely by computer or smartphone apps.
But a group of electrical engineering and computer science professors in the Case School of Engineering have been experimenting with a new suite of sensors (传感器).This system would read not only the vibrations (震动),sounds and even other movements associated with people and animals in a building, but also any slight changes in the existing electrical field.
While there still maybe a decade or so away, the home of the future could be a building that adjusts to your activity with only a few small, hidden sensors in the walls and floor without the need for monitoring cameras.
“We are trying to make a building that is able to ‘listen’ to the humans inside,” said Ming Chun Huang,an assistant professor in electrical engineering and computer science.“We are using principles similar to those of the human ear, where vibrations are picked up and our algorithms (计算程序) recognise them to determine your specific movements. That’s why we call it the ‘Internet of Ears’.”
“There is actually a constant 60Hz electrical field all around us,and because people are somewhat conductive, they short out the field just a little,” Huang said.“So,by measuring the disturbance in that field,we are able to determine their presence,or even their breathing, even when there are no vibrations associated with sound.”
Huang said they have used as few as four small sensors in the walls and floor of a room.
As for privacy concerns, the system would not be able to identify individuals, although it could recognise people’s different ways of walking.

If you could travel in time, where would you go Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.
The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing.Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years.Perhaps the best known example is the science fiction novel TheTimeMachine, which was written by H.G.Wells and published in 1895 for the first time.It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name,as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”,coined by Wells,is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible Some scientists say yes,in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”,which could be used as shortcuts to other periods.Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking said you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship—going at nearly the speed of light.Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”.It asks what would happen if a time traveller were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born.If the time traveller wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time
And would you really like to visit the future In H.G.Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角).If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.
