When our planet Earth began, there was no life. Huge storms with lightning, thunder, and floods went on for millions of years. Rivers, lakes, and seas filled with water. Then came the first living things.
The first living things developed in the sea. About 380 million years ago, some sea creatures began to move onto the shore. Over millions of years, some of them changed and were able to walk and breathe air. Others, including the horseshoe crab, have hardly changed at all.
By 200 million years ago, dinosaurs ruled the land. Some were giant plant-eaters. Others were the biggest hunters ever to walk the earth. But 65 million years ago the dinosaurs died out.
A few million years ago, the world became colder. Ice covered much of the land. Mammoths and other animals had thick fur to keep warm. These cold periods are now known as the Ice Ages.
The first people collected fruit and berries for food, and hunted wild animals. They moved around a lot, never staying anywhere for very long. Then about 10,000 years ago they started to settle down in villages. They built huts, planted crops, and kept farm animals. They kept goats and sheep. Wild dogs were also tamed so that they could help people look after their animals.

A new report shows what life might be like in 100 years from now. It describes skyscrapers that are much taller than today’s buildings, underwater “bubble” cities and holidays in space. The report is from a company. It asked experts (专家) on space and architecture, as well as city planners, to give their ideas on the life in 2120. They said the way we live, work and play will be totally different to how we do these things today. The experts used the Internet as an example. They said that 25years ago, people could not imagine how the Internet and smart phones would change our lives. The Internet has completely changed the way we communicate, learn and do daily things. The experts said the changes in the next century would be even more unbelievable.
Researchers questioned 2,000 adults about the predictions (预言) they thought were most likely (很可能的) to happen in the future. Plants and animals pass traits to their offspring through their genes. Then the process of living and growing begins. A trait is something that makes one living thing different from another. For example, having brown eyes is a trait. Another trait is having curly hair. These traits are passed along from your parents through genes. Genes are inside the cells of living things. They have information about how living things will grow. All humans have the same number and kind of genes. However, the information on the genes isn’t the same. All of the information about your traits is in your genes.
All living things go through stages of growth. After a human baby is born, it begins its life cycle. Infancy is the first stage. You are an infant in the first two years of your life. You grow a lot and learn to walk and talk. The second stage is childhood. It lasts from infancy until you become a teenager. The third stage is adolescence. During adolescence, your body will start to look like an adult’s. Adulthood is the last stage. Adults are completely developed.
Other animals go through a metamorphosis (蜕变). This happens when there are great changes in the body form in the life cycle of an animal. Some insects go through a complete metamorphosis.
