Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese style spelling bee(拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show's popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smartphones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result It's possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there's still hope for the paint brush. China's Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six year olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher's examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don't forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.
4. Which of the following is closest in meaning with the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2
A. Ever Chinese can write Chinese characters easily, especially with computers
B. Only with the help of computers can some Chinese people write Chinese characters
C. Despite the help of computers, Chinese people have forgotten how to write
D. Computers are the only means to rely on to write Chinese characters for many people
5. What can we learn about the Character Hero
A. It's open to people of all ages and all walks.
B. It's the most viewed TV programs in China.
C. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
D. It draws great public attention across the country.
6. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters
A. Chinese people don't refer to dictionaries very often.
B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D. Chinese people needn't write by hand as often with the help of technology.
7. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is__________.
A. necessary for adults to survive in China
B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
D. an ability to be developed only when you are students
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. C

Hard work really does pay off. Scientists find that perseverance(坚持不懈)leads to better grades and higher achievements in school.
“Being passionate(热情的)is not enough to ensure academic success,” says researchers, who ought of "courage" as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching long-term goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.
Researchers think that the finding could help create new training to help children develop the skill and help ensure their future success.
Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki. They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16, the sixth grade until the ninth grade in local school years. Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage was related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.
Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro, who led the study, said, “Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily. A key element of courage is high perseverance when facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well-being. Our study shows the power of courage.”
Professor Salmela-Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added, "Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves. Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with setbacks. One must not be discouraged by setbacks, but draw strength and new energy from them.
8. What can we learn about the research
A. It takes at least three years B. It helps students make progress.
C. It meets many difficulties D. It follows 2,000 students abroad.
9. What should students do according to the researchers
A. Focus on former grades B. Achieve their dreams
C. Try all their best D. Forget sadness
10. What does the underlined word "setbacks" in Paragraph 6 mean
A. strengths. B. difficulties.

Huckleberry Finn, the great character from the Mark Twain book did not like school. He preferred floating down the Mississippi River on a raft and looking for adventure. That`s why generations of schoolboys have loved reading Huckleberry Finn: they feel the same way about school as he did.
For many boys, being forced to sit all day in a school room is like being punished for a crime they did not commit. There are endless hours of boredom spent learning things they have no interest in. That's why many boys do poorly in school and many give up on education altogether.
Ironically(具有讽刺意味的是), the whole idea for schools was invented for boys. If a boy wanted to grow up to be a useful man, he had to be educated. By and by, people realized that educating girls was a good idea, too. And, ironically again, it was discovered that the school system suits girls just fine; so fine that girls now do much better than boys in school.
No one really knows why that is. Some say that girls mature(发育成熟)quicker than boys and adapt better to school life. Some also say that the school system and the curriculum(课程)have changed to encourage girls but the needs of boys have been overlooked.
Educators are now trying to find ways to get boys to be more successful in school. There are suggestions to separate the sexes and teach boys separately. There are also suggestions to change the curriculum to make it more interesting for boys.
Whatever the changes are, boys still will be boys, and dreams of floating down the Mississippi River will always be an attractive choice to just sitting in a classroom.

Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2000 students from Helsinki.

Huckleberry Finn, the great character from the Mark Twain book did not like school. He preferred floating down the Mississippi River on a raft and looking for adventure. That`s why generations of schoolboys have loved reading Huckleberry Finn: they feel the same way about school as he did.
For many boys being forced to sit all day in a school room is like being punished for a crime they did not commit.
