I’m Amanda Gorman, I’ve been crazy about writing poetry since third grade. After polishing my skills for about a decade and having judges review my poetry and videos of my performances, I was named the country’s Youth Poet Laureate in 2017, I’ve read my work at the Library of Congress. It’s been an excellent journey especially since I used to have trouble saying half the alphabet.
My twin sister Sarah and I were born very prematurely, which led to lots of ear infections. I didn’t have as much luck as Sarah and the ear infections left me with a severe hearing problem, making it difficult to understand speech, which caused me to develop a speech impediment. My sister would have to translate when I spoke because people had no idea what I was saying. Writing wasn’t just fun: it was a way to have my voice heard and to stop me from feeling pity for my disability. And I was determined to read my poetry in front of audiences.
Our single mom couldn’t always afford medical help. Sometimes she had to choose: Shall I put food on the table or make sure Amanda can say this word When we couldn’t pay, I’d spend about an hour a day recording my talking and correcting the mistakes gain and again. But poetry was a constant. I didn’t need expensive materials to train myself to be better at that.
At age 20, I still suffer from self-doubt, but I have got a necklace which my grandmother gave me. When I’m nervous before performing, I hold it and say, “I am the daughter of black writers who fought for their freedom, broke their chains and changed the world” And 100 percent of the time after saying that, I’m ready to go.
4. Why was the visit to the Library of Congress special for Amanda
A. She received a big award after the visit.
B. She was inspired to write poetry there.
C. She did some reading for an audience.
D. She succeeded in saying the alphabet there.
5. How is Sarah different from Amanda
A. Sarah is physically healthier.
B. Sarah finds writing much more fun.
C. Sarah likes public speaking a lot more.
D. Sarah didn’t have ear infections as a baby.
6. What did Amanda think of her mom
A. Her mom didn’t like setting the table.
B. Her mom struggled to support the family.
C. Her mom showed little concern for her.
D. Her mom was good at correcting her mistakes.
7. What can be inferred about Amanda from the last paragraph
A. She’s a black writer. B. She’s always confident.
C. She has many necklaces. D. She aims to change the world.
C
Maybe you pop vitamins supporting brainpower, or stock upon these foods that boost brain health. But new guidelines from the American Academy of Neurology suggest there's something better you can do to keep your mind sharp.
A quarter of adults aged 80 to 84 experience mild cognitive (认知的) impairment, according to AAN. To address the widespread problem, a group of neurologists and Alzheimer's (阿尔兹海默氏症的) specialists went through existing studies to define the best ways to prevent and treat cognitive decline-and you might be surprised by what they included and what they didn't.
Surprisingly, the AAN guidelines don't include any medication (药物) or dietary recommendations. The authors stress that there haven't been any high-quality, long-term studies finding foods or medication can help cognitive decline. The guidelines also say doctors can consider suggesting cognitive training to patients with memory loss but not to rely on it. So far, the report's authors say the evidence is too inconclusive to say for sure if brain exercises, like memory and attention training or problem solving for everyday issues associated with memory loss, are beneficial. Still, these morning brain exercises can't do any harm.
But there was one big discovery from the new guidelines: Exercising just twice a week could improve cognitive decline. One study showed adults with mild cognitive impairment who did resistance training twice a week scored better on executive function and associative (联想的) memory tests than a group that worked on balancing, stretching, and relaxing.
What's more, another study had older adults attend either biweekly health classes or sessions of aerobics, strength training, balance exercises, and multitasking training. Six months later, the ones who'd exercised regularly scored better on cognitive health and memory tests, plus had less brain shrinkage.
AAN now recommends doctors tell patients with memory loss to exercise twice a week to keep their minds sharp. This is the best time to exercise if you want to improve your memory. It looks like you've got just one more reason to clear time in your schedule for a workout — even if it's only on the weekends.
8. What does the underlined word ''impairment'' in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Error. B. Development C. Decline. D. Presence.
9. AAN may be uncertain about .
A. strength training B.brain exercise
C. exercises twice a week D. resistance training
10. Which of the following may the author agree with
A. Daily exercises are beneficial to Alzheimer.
B. The AAN guidelines attach importance to workout.
C. Medication is of significance in the AAN guidelines.
D. Stocking up on vitamins supporting brainpower means nothing.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Exercise. B. Entertainment. C. Science D. Health
D
Today, we are constantly bombarded with media reports about research on the right diet to follow to help us maintain a healthy lifestyle or lose weight—but it's hard to know which one to pick and, once chosen, it's harder still to stick to it. And now there's another choice to get our teeth into.
A flexitarian(弹性素食者) diet involves eating plant based foods and only occasionally eating meat and fish. This eating style allows you to supplement some ingredients that you wouldn't get in a stricter vegan(素食主义者) diet—another trend growing in popularity. And like veganism, flexitarianism isn't about eating carefully to help you lose a few pounds—it's something people choose for ethical reasons, to help the planet. And a study into the global food system and how it affects the climate, has found that eating mainly plant based foods is one of three key steps towards a sustainable future for all by 2050.
This research found that food waste will need to be halved and farming practices will also have to improve to achieve this. But without a single solution, a combined approach is needed. Dr Marco Springmann from the University of Oxford was one of the lead authors of the report. He told the BBC, “We really found that a combination of measures would be needed to stay within environmental limits and those include changes towards healthier more plant based diets.”
But whereas vegans think it's wrong for animals to be killed for food, flexitarians believe eating meat once in a while is acceptable. And Dr Springmann agrees—as long as we “treat it as a luxury, it's probably OK but you shouldn't have more than one serving of red meat, which includes beef and pork, per week.” And here's another fact to digest: If we moved to this type of diet, the study found that greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture would be cut by more than half.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To lead to the topic. B. To entertain the readers.
C. To ask for information D. To present an idea.
13. We can know that a flexitarian diet ________.
A. is the most popular eating style B. involves eating no meat
C. benefits the environment D. only balances the nutrition
14. What does Dr Marco Springmann agree with
A. It's wrong to kill animals for food.
B. Improving farming practices makes no sense.
C. A plant based diet has nothing to do with climate change.
D. Combined measures are needed for environmental protection.
15. What can be the suitable title for the text
A. Methods of keeping fit. B. Choose a flexitarian diet.
C. Measures to protect the environment. D. Keep a strict vegan diet.

Dear Mr.Smith,
I’m LiHua, from Class 2, Grade 1. I’m writing to suggest setting up a Chinese paper- cutting club. The reasons are as follows.
First, paper-cutting is a decorative craft, with beautiful designs displayed on windows and doors. So I think an increasing number of students will be absorbed in it .Second, learning Chinese paper-cutting is a great way to learn about Chinese culture, which will be favoured by many international students. Third, in this club, we can share our works with each other and establish good relationships with other students. There is no doubt that this club will be bound to enrich our school life.
Thank you for taking my suggestions into account and I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely
Li Hua
