These days, North Kickapoo Street in Shawnee, Oklahoma, is a four-lane road leading out to the interstate. But in the mid-1950s, it was just a gravel country road, the perfect place for our daddies to teach us how to drive.
We didn’t have driver’s education at Shawnee High School. We were on our own.Mom took me to pick up an instruction manual.I was the oldest of my friends, so we were excited at the prospect of a whole new world opening up.We’d have freedom to get around.
Mom let me back our 1949 Ford out of the garage a few times to get used to the clutch(离合器踏板) and gearshift(变速杆).I got familiar with the motion but was hardly ready for my road test.
Finally, the day came for Daddy to give me a real lesson. He drove out to the end of the paved section of Kickapoo Street and across to where the gravel started. My daddy had come from a family of 10, and they had been farmers in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl (干旱尘暴区).There was only one way to do things, and that was the right way.
Compliments were rare, so when he muttered his approval it was special. I didn’t want to experience his glare if I ground the clutch.I took a deep breath, slowly let out the clutch, pushed the stick into the second gear, eased down the road, and then carefully moved into the third gear.He had me stop and repeat the procedure two or three more times until I came to the end of the section. I was feeling pretty good as I came to a stop and looked to Daddy for approval.
He glared at me and then barked, “You’ve been driving, haven’t you ”He must have thought I’d been practicing in somebody else’s car I quickly explained that my training was all on the up and up.
That was 60 years ago. I can still see the nod he gave me when he said,“Well, you did good.”

C.It was a great failure.
D.It went beyond Daddy’s expectations.

We’ve probably all met someone who likes to show off how many places he has been to.It’s annoying but true that to some people, traveling is all about the number of destinations one has set foot on. But fortunately, the old “been there, seen that” mode (模式) is changing.
Last year’s travel trend was experiential travel. This is where tourists look for ways to get to know local culture and interact with local people so they feel less like an outsider.
So what about this year Can thoughtful tourists get even more out of their traveling experience Transformative travel is much like experiential travel, but takes it a step further. It usually goes through three stages—you go to a place that has a very different background from the place you come from, you learn wisdom from the new culture and the people you meet, and finally you return home and apply the knowledge to your own life and the lives of those around you. This last stage is how the transformation is completed and what separates transformative travel from experiential travel.“This allows our travelers to start to see the world less in black and white, and to begin to appreciate how delicate many problems are when seen from different angles,” Jennine Cohen, director of US travel company GeoEx, told Vogue magazine.
According to Rebecca Warren, managing editor at Lonely Planet, sustainable travel will be one of this year’s top trends. Traveling a shorter distance can reduce your carbon footprint.“One trans-Atlantic flight equals a year’s worth of driving, so consider planning an adventure closer to home,”suggested Warren, according to US News.Another way to involve sustainability in your travel plans is to choose a destination that will benefit the most from your trip. For example, places like Thailand will enjoy an increase in its local economy(经济)from the money it will make through tourism.
24.What is the author’s attitude towards the “been there, seen that”travel mode
A.Slight doubt. B.Great interest.
C.Strong dislike. D.Total approval.
25.Which of the following can be regarded as transformative travel
A.Thomas traveled to Thailand, spending a lot of money on souvenirs.
B.Jackson traveled to France, visiting the world-famous Eiffel Tower.
C.Michael traveled to India, learning about its local traditions and customs.
D.Donald traveled to America, introducing high technology into his company.
26.The underlined word “sustainable” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to .
A.going against the low-carbon lifestyle
B.inspiring travelers to take adventures
C.producing profits for developed countries
D.continuing to develop with a green concept
27.What is the purpose of the text
A.To advocate a new travel mode.
B.To introduce the latest travel trends.
C.To show the true meaning of traveling.
D.To raise public environmental awareness.
C
Talking to yourself may seem a little shameful. If you’ve ever been heard blaming yourself for a foolish mistake or practicing a tricky speech ahead of time, you’ll have felt the social prejudice against communicating with yourself in words.According to the well-known saying, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.
But there’s no need for embarrassment.Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thought.Far from being a sign of madness, self-talk allows us to plan what we are going to do,manage our activities, regulate our emotions and even create our experiences.
Take a trip to any preschool and watch a small child playing with his toys. You are very likely to hear him talking to himself: offering himself directions and giving voice to his negative feelings.Psychologists refer to this as private speech—language that is spoken out loud but directed at the self.
As children, according to the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. As we grow older,we don’t abandon this system—we internalize(使内在化)it.
Psychological experiments have shown that this so-called inner speech can improve our performance on tasks ranging from judging what other people are thinking to sorting images(形象) out.The effect of our words can give us a valuable view on our actions.
We internalize the private speech we use as children, but we never entirely put away the out-loud version. Both kinds of self-talk—the silent and the vocal(声音的)—seem to bring a range of benefits to our thinking. Those words to the self, spoken silently or loud, are so much more than casual chatting.
28.The author introduces the topic of the text by .
A.describing a silly mistake
B.conveying a crazy idea
C.presenting a popular belief
D.discussing a social problem
29.What is adults’ usual practice in terms of self-talk
A.They give up the private speech system entirely.
B.They prefer the silent inner speech to the out-loud version.
C.They choose vocal self-talk to manage their emotions and actions.
D.They rely on both silent and vocal self-talk to control others’ behavior.
30.According to the text, inner speech can help us .
A.reflect on our own actions
B.influence others’ way of thinking
C.realize the benefit of casual chatting
D.pay more attention to others’ images

Fun Writing Activities for Struggling Writers
There are dozens of reasons kids struggle with writing. They may have difficulty getting their thoughts down on paper. 31 Perhaps grammar and language barriers are blocking their progress.Whatever the reason, adding a little fun can be a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
 32
Sometimes writers get stuck because they simply don’t know where to start. For a child, you can try things that are geared(适合) towards their interests, like My Favorite Toy, or What I Like to Do in the Summer.Remember, it’s important to support and guide their ideas, not to discourage thoughts or judge them.
Develop a story map.
A great activity to help struggling writers is to build a story map.Write down ideas for the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Or put the topic in the middle of the paper and draw lines out like a wheel for who, what, where, and why. 33 This is helpful, because it takes stress out of the writing process.
Make writing relevant.
Children are more apt to write if they can identify with the purpose of writing.Writing a letter to a friend or relative can better engage a struggling writer.Or maybe your child has some suggestions for books that the library should have. 34 If writing becomes a more meaningful activity to the child, it can help to make it an easier process.
Make writing enjoyable.
You could consider making different writing supplies available like colored pens and pencils, notebooks, etc.Or you could provide a word bank of common words for your kid to use and spell. 35 Afterwards, reward your child’s good performance. These all set the stage and invite kids to get excited to write.
A.Inspire ideas.
B.Develop an interest.
C.Use the map to guide the writing.
D.Make the process into more of a game.
E.Maybe they lack experiences to write about.
F.There are loads of fun ways to get children writing.
G.Encourage him to write a letter to the person in charge.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
  阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Every cloud has a silver lining.”It drives me crazy when Mom says nonsense (废话) like that.
I’d barely had time to arrange myself in the passenger seat, my foot already blown up like a balloon when she came out with it, exactly like I knew she would. First, she patted my leg. Then she just couldn’t help herself,“Every cloud has a silver lining, you know, sweetheart.” “Mom, I appreciate the thought, but I’m not ready to look on the bright side of this.” We hadn’t even left the school parking lot yet.
On the farthest side of the field, I could see my teammates doing sprint training, Coach Zito striding back toward them. He’d mercifully helped me to the car in silence.Unlike Mom, he knew when it was best to say nothing.
As Mom started the engine, I imagined my teammates cooling down without me while they listened to Coach Zito’s pep talk. And next Thursday, they would go to practice without me, and the Thursday after that… When I had fallen and twisted my ankle, I’d cried from the pain, but I was crying out of self-pity in the car. Hours and hours of training, and then this.I told myself there was a glimmer(微光) of hope that everything would turn out okay, and that I’d make it to the track meet next month, but I knew it was just that: a glimmer. The tears fell hot and fast.Mom gave me a weak smile.“It’ll be okay, Casey.” I suspected this was another version of the silver-lining thing, but I felt so miserable that I let it pass.
We finally arrived at the hospital.Doctor Van gently moved my ankle around a bit before carefully lowering it. I nervously asked how long it would be before I could run. “Four weeks maybe, possibly five,” he replied.“And even then, you’ll need to take it easy for a while. Is that possible ” he asked with a smile.

(Text 10)
It is absolutely unnecessary to bring a gift when invited to dinner, but if you want to do so it should be a small, inexpensive item. You might bring some sweets,or some small toys for the children,or something from China. Here are some suggestions:a paper cut is a lovely gift;if you want to make it even fancier, you can buy a very inexpensive frame in the local five-and-ten and frame it.Chinese tea is a wonderful gift. It’s true that Chinese tea is available in the States, but the fact that you chose it and brought it with you from China makes it very special.Chinese book marks are very lovely gifts, and if you want to buy a set of Chinese paintings which you admire, you might give one of them as a gift. One of the nicest things you can do is to cook some typical Chinese dish and bring it with you.Again, however,a gift is not necessary, and if you come with a group of scholars or students, one small token gift from all of you is entirely satisfactory.
