The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. First, it is essential that people understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems. Second, it is important to assume(假定) that one’s efforts will not always be successful, and adjust one’s behaviour appropriately.
For example, one should always assume that there is a great possibility that cultural differences are causing communication problems. One should respond slowly and carefully in cross-cultural exchanges, not jumping to the conclusion that you know what is being thought and said.
William Ury’s suggestion for heated conflicts is to stop, listen, and think, or as he puts it “go to the balcony” when the situation gets tense(紧张的). This helps in cross-cultural communication as well. When things seem to be going badly, stop or slow down and think. What could be going on here Is it possible that I misinterpreted what they said
Active listening can sometimes be used to check this out—by repeating what one thinks he/she heard, one can confirm that he/she understands the communication accurately.
Often intermediaries(调解人) can be helpful in cross-cultural communication situations. They can translate both the essential meaning and the manner of what is said. For example, they can tone down strong statements that would be considered appropriate in one culture but not in another, before they are given to people from a culture that does not talk together in such a strong way. They can also adjust the timing of what is said and done. Some cultures move quickly to the point; others talk about other things long enough to establish a relationship with the other person. If discussion on the primary topic begins too soon, the group that needs a “warm-up” first will feel uncomfortable. An intermediary who understands this can explain the problem, and make appropriate adjustments.
24. What is the most important thing in cross-cultural communication
A. Knowledge of your own culture.
B. The ability to take in different opinions.
C. Awareness of the problems that may arise.
D. Successful efforts to change your behaviour.
25. Which character helps prevent communication problems
A. Patience. B. Honesty.
C. Generosity. D. Stubbornness.
26. What does William Ury mean by “go to the balcony”
A. Go outside and enjoy fresh air.
B. Get out of the situation temporarily.
C. Exchange positions with each other.
D. Deal with the conflicts in a secret way.
27. What is the requirement for an intermediary
A. To be an experienced translator.
B. To know both cultures very well.
C. To be directly involved in a discussion.
D. To behave properly all through a discussion.

When I first decided to study abroad, I had no idea that I would absorb so much from the experience. Getting involved with CEA has helped me with my résumé, communication skills, and my passion for travelling.
After studying abroad for the summer term in San Jose, Costa Rica, I learned about CEA’s Alumni Ambassador(校友大使) programme. As an ambassador, I am one of the faces representing CEA on my campus—Southern Illinois University—encouraging and educating promising students on the benefits of studying abroad, and the various CEA programmes. This programme has helped further my communication skills by giving me the opportunity to present information and discuss my own experience abroad with other students.
While abroad, I had the pleasure of working with the marketing team at the university I attended. I wrote multiple blogs about the food, my host family, and the places I discovered during my stay. For participating, I was able to get a letter of recommendation that has helped with my job search and employment in the public relations field.
Going abroad and being a part of the PR programme for CEA helped me improve my résumé. It also helped me become a more diverse and culturally many-sided person. Through recalling about my experiences in job interviews and with students on campus, I’ve gained more confidence when it comes to communicating and sharing my passion for travelling.
I am now pursuing opportunities to study abroad as a graduate student. Being an Alumni Ambassador has opened many doors for me to travel around the world, and I have been introduced to many study abroad and internship(实习) programmes. My experience abroad has impacted on my life and given me the drive that I need to further my education and knowledge of the Spanish language and Latin culture.

C. To discuss travel experiences abroad with others.
D. To help the promising students with their résumés.

A. In the hotel.
B. On the campus.
C. At the university.
D. In the host family.
34. After joining in the CEA, the author became more .
A. stubborn
B. reliable
C. confident
D. patient
35. What can we learn by joining in CEA programmes

Studying abroad is also a memory that can be valued for a lifetime. 40 Once you have made friends with your classmates, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy being with them in your hang-outs, in your parties, and even in helping out with each other’s homework.
A. This is an opportunity to make friends from other races.
B. Studying abroad also offers an opportunity to travel.
C. Different countries have different cultures.
D. A college course in the UK, for example, is not similar to the one we have here.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kevin had been eagerly waiting for the holidays to arrive. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation.
Kevin took out his scrapbook(剪贴簿). The exams had just finished, and the summer vacation had just started. Now he was free as a bird—free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television ... anything he wanted to do.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling(使惊吓) him.
It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.”
Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life.
The next few days were horrible for Kevin.
After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a cola bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling cola all over the painting and totally ruining it.
The next day was even worse.
Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes.
One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world-famous philatelist(集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.”
This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.
注意:
  (1) 续写词数应为150左右;
  (2) 请按如下格式作答。
Kevin had a nice stamp collection, and it was with his friend Alan. He decided to get his stamp album back

On the first blank page of the album, Kevin found there were two small words: Dick Brown.

答案:
Dear Mike,
This summer I am to attend an English summer camp for Sino-US cultural exchanges, which I have long been dreaming about.
This programme is aimed at promoting the understanding of the people and cultures between the two countries. During the two-week English summer camp, we will visit some famous American universities, experience American culture and customs, and tour places of interest in the US. Furthermore, we will also be offered a platform to practise our spoken English in an authentic language environment.
I am sure that this programme will help me better understand the cultural difference. Meanwhile, I can introduce my country to American students through this programme, which will definitely be a great success.
  Looking forward to your reply.

第二节(满分25分)
Kevin had a nice stamp collection, and it was with his friend Alan. He decided to get his stamp album back in order to keep the stamps safe. But Kevin was not available, so Kevin asked Max to get his album instead. He gave Max Alan’s address and told him several times to be careful. Max left and soon came back with the album without ruining it at all, which really surprised Kevin. However, when Kevin checked it, he found that it was not his album.
On the first blank page of the album, Kevin found there were two small words: Dick Brown. This was a big surprise for both of them. Actually, Max had gone to another house by mistake. The door of the house was unlocked and nobody was there. Max went into the room and found an album that was not Kevin’s. Kevin called the police and told them about it. Kevin and Max got a reward for helping to solve the stamp robberies. Kevin soon forgot the horrible things Max had done.

解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“... it is essential that people understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems.”可知,作者认为,跨文化交际的关键是我们必须对可能出现的因文化不同而产生的沟通障碍有充分的认知。故选C。

注意:
  (1) 续写词数应为150左右;
  (2) 请按如下格式作答。
Kevin had a nice stamp collection, and it was with his friend Alan. He decided to get his stamp album back

On the first blank page of the album, Kevin found there were two small words: Dick Brown.

答案:
