Some of the world’s biggest junk food makers are being paid millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to develop healthier snacks.
They are being handed grants by Vince Cable’s Business Department to meet pledges(承诺) to cut the salt and fat content of their food. Many firms have received the cash. The money is being used for research into new technologies and ingredients.
But critics have condemned the use of the public purse to help billion-pound companies because they have already benefited from tax breaks available for carrying out research and development.
At least £2.9 million has been handed over. While the work is done in cooperation with academic researchers at universities, the projects are manufacturer-led and commercial gain is the main consideration. Some companies have their own multimillion-pound research and development facilities which have received hundreds of thousands of pounds in funding.
In an attempt to curb people’s obesity, 170 companies signed a voluntary pledge to reduce the calories and levels of salt in their products. More than 390 have now signed up to the Public Health Responsibility Deal. Critics say junk food makers should be properly regulated rather than being allowed to sign up to a voluntary deal.
A spokesman in one of the companies added, “By working in partnership in this way and co-funding important research, we can have a wide-reaching, positive impact on the health of the nation.”
24. Why are grants given to the junk food companies
A. To improve working conditions.
B. To develop healthier products.
C. To bring in new technologies.
D. To help to cut down their costs.
25. Who will take the lead in the projects according to the text

Obviously, most people who try to lose weight generally focus all or most of their attention on the foods they eat. But what about their behaviour Are there habits they could be breaking that would also help them lose weight
According to the Ohio State University Extension, which summarised the findings, the researchers learned people who routinely ate breakfasts, lunches, and dinners tended to have more success losing weight than people whose eating schedules were irregular. As a bonus, they were also more likely to eat a larger quantity of fruit and vegetables.
One activity that brought a disaster to people who wanted to lose weight was watching television, particularly if they ate while watching TV—and especially if they ate while watching TV after 7 p.m. People who did these things, including simply watching a lot of television, tended to have a higher body mass index (BMI), as well as a higher intake of fat and sugars.
Those who ate out a lot also tended to take in more fat and sugars, while eating a smaller quantity of fruit and vegetables. For the purpose of the study, eating away from home was defined not only as eating in restaurants but also eating food provided by an employer, eating food provided by colleagues at work, and buying food at convenience stores or gas stations.
Finally, the best results were achieved by those motivated people who kept written track of the amount and type of exercise they did and how many calories they ate, who planned meals, and used meal replacements. Those who did these things the most generally lost more weight, ate less fat and fewer sugars, ate more fruit and vegetables, and engaged in more physical activities.
So cutting out all those high-calorie snacks will help you lose weight. But so, apparently, will change some of your habits and behaviours.

B. Regular eating routine is good for losing weight.
C. Losing weight depends on food a person eats.

A. Because they did nothing but watch TV after 7 a.m.
B. Because they were fond of watching TV at noon.

D. Because they developed a kind of bad habit.
30. What does the fourth paragraph imply
A. The bosses like to invite his employees to dinner.
B. More and more people are content to eat out.
C. Eating away from home does harm to health.
D. It is very convenient to have dinners outside.
31. What is the author’s purpose in the passage

C. To advise people to refuse calories.
D. To tell people that they need to change their habits to lose weight.

San Francisco has some of the best restaurants anywhere—and one of the most unique, the top pizza restaurant in the city, is also one of the first to be owned and operated totally by deaf people.
Melody and Russell Stein opened the place in 2011. Their 900-degree wood-fired oven(炉) is the best they could find, and so is every ingredient, from sauce to sausage, to cheese, some of which come from Italy. “We also make it in-house,” said Melody. “And if that doesn’t make you hungry, I don’t know what will,” added Russell.
And for the customers who show up there night after night, food is only part of the experience. Unlike other restaurants, noise isn’t a problem, and neither is communication; pointing at the menu works just fine. And you can even phone in a takeout order. A green light on the wall signals an incoming call. An operator picks it up, and translates your order in sign language by a special TV.
But this is about a lot more than serving hungry customers.
Tracy Smith, a reporter, asked Melody, “How important is it to you to have an all-deaf staff ”
“Oh, it’s very important,” she replied. “If a hearing person, say, doesn’t get on well here, they can find a job tomorrow, while all the deaf people here have to look for years and still can’t find a job. That’s when I decided I would have a totally deaf team, even if they have no work experience.”
Melody comes from a restaurant-owning family from Hong Kong, and she met Russell at Gallaudet University.
Now they’re looking to franchise(获得特许经销权), with a little help from the Communication Service for the Deaf(CSD). It’s a good investment(投资), says CSD’s Brandi Rarus.
Rarus said, “People often think that deaf people don’t have much to offer, or are less valuable, or less worthy in some ways. But when you come to this place, you see that’s not true.”
32. How does Russell feel about the food in his restaurant
A. Confident.
B. Disappointed.
C. Surprised.
D. Uncertain.
33. Who is most likely to be employed by Russell’s restaurant
A. A food journalist.
B. A top university graduate.
C. A deaf girl with little work experience.
D. A man good at communicating with others.
34. What does Rarus think of Russell’s restaurant
A. It tops the local restaurants.
B. It will close down sooner or later.
C. It needs to employ hearing workers.
D. It makes people see things differently.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Enjoying Pizza in Russell’s Restaurant
B. The Rise of Deaf-owned Business
C. All-deaf Pizza Restaurant Is All-good
D. Building Bridges Through Communication

How to Grow Organic Potatoes in Containers

Water your newly planted potatoes well. Check the container at least once a day. 38 . If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If it’s very hot or windy, you may have to water your potato container gardens more than once a day. Make sure to water deeply by waiting until water runs out of the bottom.
Hill your potatoes as they grow. 39 , you need to hill them in case they will break. This is done by adding a couple of inches of soil around your potato plants. Be careful not to break the plants in the process. Repeat the hilling process a few more times as your plants grow. You can also stop once the soil reaches the top of your container.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Financial Times gave part of my job to a robot 56. Amy last week. For years I have been making podcast(播客) version of my column, but now I am faced with a tough competition.
To be fair, Amy does have some things going for her. She has a great voice, smooth as velvet. Her 57. (two) advantage is that she’s practically free. She is part of a new service from Amazon that turns text 58. speech, costing nearly nothing. Even more 59. (impress) is her speed. Less than two seconds after receiving my 60. (write) text, which means when I just start to read, “Yesterday the Finan ... ”, she has already finished.
Yet once I got over my distress and listened to her work, I felt 61. (good). I know it’s early days for her, but at the moment Amy is no match for me. Listening to her is not like listening to 62. non-English speaker read aloud, but to someone without brain, or heart, or sense of humour. Her 63. (deliver) is so poor that I don’t even understand. Amy never reads with understanding, never knows when 64. (pause), and never does irony. She continues to get it wrong.
Finally, I’m not afraid Amy is about to steal my job. Only people possess human touch. It is the heart-to-heart communication 65. makes us special, beautiful and irreplaceable.

I pulled the car into the garage and got out, just like every night for the past 16 years. The difference was that I wouldn’t have to work in the morning.
I slammed the car door. I used to be a leader of a national bank until it was closed. I’d put my heart and soul into my job. Not only did I work long hours, but also I was on call 24 hours a day, on weekends and holidays. If someone had a technical problem, even at 2:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, I was on it.
My kids joked that even though they were teenagers, I was the one who was absorbed in my cell phone and had to be told not to text at the dinner table.
My wife, Michelle, had been able to go to work full-time as an office manager once we heard my job was threatened. But our son, TJ, was a high school senior, and the girls, Sarah and Tara, were in ninth grade. And I wanted to give them the education and opportunities they deserved. “If I can’t provide anything for my family,” I asked, “what good am I ”
I opened the garage door and stepped out into our yard. The lawn and flower beds that my mum had tended so carefully were overrun with weeds. There was a maple tree in the middle of the yard that my parents planted when I was a boy. It needed caring. But I’d put on a lot of weight—no time to exercise with my crazy hours. I went up to the house. Michelle greeted me at the door with a hug. “It’s going to be okay. We will get through it,” she said. “Maybe you should think of this time as a break. You deserve one.”
“I’m sorry, Dad,” TJ said. “I know how much your job meant to you.” His concern was mirrored in the girls’ faces.
“I’ll take care of this,” I told them. “I’m going to work round the clock to find a new job and make our lives go back to normal.”
注意:
  (1) 续写词数应为150左右;
  (2) 请按如下格式作答。

The new lawn I’d planned for so long began to take shape and so did I.

第一节(满分15分)
Good health is of great importance in the development of the human body. Here are some suggestions on how to keep fit.
Firstly, have a balanced diet. Try to eat fruit and vegetables besides meat. Secondly, taking plenty of exercise is necessary. Exercise can prevent you from feeling tired. Moreover, form a good habit by going to bed and getting up early.
In a word, a healthy diet, moderate exercise and a good living habit do good to your health.
第二节(满分25分)
The next morning, I got up before everyone else. I made a pot of coffee and opened my laptop. I searched job sites, companies and emailed my friends. By then Michelle and the kids were up. “This isn’t a problem you need to solve today. Take some time for yourself,” my wife said. By mid-morning the quiet of the house was driving me crazy. I missed the noise of the office. I walked outside and my gaze fell on those overgrown flower beds. I cleared a small patch. Every day I took breaks to do other things I’d neglected.
The new lawn I’d planned for so long began to take shape and so did I. With the physical labour, the extra weight dropped off, and I felt healthier than I had in ages. The flower beds and the maple tree looked great. The five of us hung out on the deck while I made dinner on the grill. This was the last year TJ would be home. Sarah and Tara would go to senior school soon too. If I hadn’t had this time with them, I’d be wishing for it. Now I had the time. I could spend time with my children. I could be a good father and a good husband during this time. I had the chance to find a healthy balance between work and home.
