Besides the excitement of travel, one reason to study abroad is that you will experience new customs, holidays, foods, art, music, and politics first-hand.
“I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps what’s more important is how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself. I learned this from the viewpoint of an active member of the community and my host family, not from the tourist’s point of view,” says Andrew, who studied in Poitiers, France.
Another reason for studying abroad is that you’ll gain self-confidence. Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of more than 3 million people and a huge change from her hometown of 35,000! Christina says she learned how to better stand up for herself and her beliefs and to express herself in another language. What could make you more confident than that
Living away from home can also help you adjust in the transition(过渡) to college and adulthood. Mathew says he returned from studying in Australia with confidence and a real interest in international affairs that made him different from his peers(同龄人). “After having gone abroad in high school, I found the transition to college a breeze—moving 560 miles from home didn’t seem particularly frightening after having lived thousands of miles away.”
Most of all, it’s fun while you’re studying in a different learning environment.

I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable(好客的) and friendly—but only once they had been introduced to new people.
However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage trip, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was berated(斥责) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat—it had not been “spare” after all. I apologised in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realised my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome among them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not have always been so kindly treated.
Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to intrude on someone else’s privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.
5. What do we know about the occupants of the carriage when the author was travelling in Italy
A. They all laughed at the author for his mistake.
B. They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public.
C. They were all on the side of the gentleman.
D. They all showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.
6. What does the author think of the Italian people
A. Cold. B. Rude.
C. Hospitable. D. Helpful.
7. According to the last paragraph, why did English passengers sit in near silence
A. They were all strangers to each other.
B. They were too tired to speak.
C. Privacy was a valued tradition in England.
D. Everybody had their own share of privacy.
8. What does the author intend to tell the readers
A. His travelling experiences.
B. Cultural differences to show hospitality and politeness.
C. The culture shock he experienced in Italy and the US.
D. How to adapt ourselves to a new culture.
C

Every year, families across the US and the UK hang up little strange-shaped pickles(腌黄瓜) to decorate their Christmas trees. The practice is 1 by many English-speaking families, and is thought to be brought over from 2 .
The tradition involves hiding the pickle ornament(装饰品) among the branches, and 3 the child who finds it with the chance to open gifts first. It’s also believed that person will get good 4 for the year.
The origin of the 5 , however, is a bit confusing. In fact, it doesn’t seem to have actually 6 in Germany at all, since most Germans don’t practise it. In 2016, a survey conducted among 2,057 Germans found that 91 percent had never even heard of it.
Another story is that the tradition of 7 a pickle didn’t actually start in Germany, but with a German immigrant in the US. The 8 goes that a German man named John Lower immigrated to the US and became ill when he was in prison during the Civil War. He persuaded a guard to give him a pickle as a last meal, but he 9 surviving. After being released, he honoured that pickle by starting his own 10 tradition of hiding a pickle in his Christmas tree for the kids—saying 11 found it would have the same good fortune he had.
Of course, that story is also 12 , and could just be a tale coming out of nowhere to explain the pickles later on. According to Wide Open Country, the whole pickle game was most 13 a marketing trick to sell German glass ornaments to Americans.
It was said to be 14 by F.W. Woolworth when the store began importing the ornaments in 1880. Each one would come with a card telling the story of the tradition.
