My husband and I used to live in the city, but we often faced a lot of problems there. There was a lot of late night noise. It was difficult to find parking. And the rent of the apartment was high. Finally, my husband and I decided to move to the suburbs (郊区) outside Boston.
We started looking for our new home. It turned out that many other people were also moving to the suburbs and it wasn’t easy to find a nice house there. Finally, we went to see a small and dark house. It needed a lot of work. But it was well built and it was on a street where we could walk to Starbucks, restaurants and bus stops. Well, before I knew it, we had made an offer and the house became ours.
On our first night in the house I cried for five hours. I thought we had made the wrong choice and I wanted to go back to the city. The house was smelly and old. And many families and old people lived around it. But after thinking of the problems we had when we were living in the city, I calmed down. Besides, our new home wasn’t that bad, after all. I had a driveway of my own. There were three big bedrooms and a backyard for my dog. Oh, how lovely the sound of nothing was. I changed the house inch by inch and it became a very comfortable home.
We have been in our house for over two years until now and it’s the best move we have ever made. While I’m glad I can drive into the city in 15 minutes and enjoy all it has offered, I’m always happy to return home.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Since then, it has become a familiar term for a person who spends a lot of time sitting, and little time exercising. Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the term “couch potato” is used rather than “couch tomato”, a person may become a “couch potato” because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is also said to have something to do with the connection of potatoes with high calorie (卡路里) food like potato chips.
People now would say “couch potato” whenever they talk about overweight and obesity (肥胖). Indeed, “couch potatoes” are believed to risk heart disease, which can be avoided by regular exercise.
It is true that technology and modern life in general make us sick, fat, lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.
“Couch potato” kids are a particular concern. Media reports repeatedly claim that children today are fatter than their elder generations, but less athletically skilled, less interested in physical activity and more addicted (上瘾的) to “junk food” and technology such as televisions and computers. The message is clear:today’s children are fat because they are lazy and eat too much. Moreover, because technology is becoming more sophisticated (复杂的), children are less able to resist (抵抗,忍得住) technology’s attraction, and are more likely to spend more time using technology, less time doing physical activity and, therefore, more likely to be fat.
A. The first paragraph is mainly talking about________.
B. why “couch potato” is used as a term for a person
C. when “couch potato” is used as a term for a person
D. how “couch potato” is different from “couch tomato”
E. what kind of person looks like a potato

using technology.
A. we are more likely to risk heart disease in modern life
B. we spend less time doing exercise
C. we needn’t do many things by ourselves any more
D. we spend all our time watching TV and playing computer games
30. It’s kids’ ________that people are particularly concerned about.
A. food B. study C. health D. hobby
32.According to the passage, the author may suggest that ________.
A. scientists should stop their research into technology
B. parents should take better care of their children
C. kids should be stopped from using new technology
D. people should spend less time using technology

Not long ago, few little girls imagined they could grow up to become astronauts. For years in the United States, only men had that opportunity. In 1983, that changed. Sally Ride made history by becoming the first American woman to travel to space.
On Monday, Ride died at the age of 61. “Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars.”
Ride became interested in space when she was a kid. “If you asked me when I was 12 whether I wanted to be an astronaut, I’m sure I would have said yes,” she said in a 2010 interview. “But I didn’t even think about that as a possible career.”
After studying physics in college and graduate school, Ride got her chance. She was accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program in 1978, and then chosen to be the first American female in space. In 1983, she blasted into space aboard the Challenger shuttle. “There is no amusement park ride on the Earth that even comes close,” she said.
Ride returned to space on the Challenger a second time in 1984. Between the two missions, she spent a total of 343 hours in orbit. After that, she remained involved with the space program and also worked to share her passion for science with kids. She co authored six science books for children, and started her own science education company.
Ride knew that she held a unique place in history. “I realized how important it was for a woman to break that barrier and open the door for other women to be able to do the same exciting things that men had been doing,” she said.
Since Ride’s historic trip, more that 40 other American women have traveled to space. They all had Ride to thank for opening the door to the final frontier.
33.Sally Ride was regarded as a national hero because she ________.

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
How to achieve a healthy lifestyle
We all know that it is good to live a healthy life. 61 (live) a healthy life means we should eat healthy food. Yet for many of us keeping a healthy lifestyle is very difficult. Part of this is because we are creatures of habit.
So if you want 62 (live) a healthy life, you have to change your habits that are not so healthy. In order to feel less tired, you have to replace your habit of sleeping only 4 hours a day with sleeping at least 6 hours a day.
Now when most people decide to live a more healthy life, they try to deal with all of their habits all at once. Take losing weight 63 example. They go on 64 quite strict diet, and yes, they do lose weight, sometimes a lot of weight in a short period. But they do not really change their eating habits. So these people often notice they will gain the weight 65 , and more even, once they stop the diet.
And the same holds true for these people. They start exercising in order to lose weight or to overcome a physical problem. Once the weight has been lost or the problem has been overcome, many stop 66 (exercise). It has not become a habit.
In fact, a lot of people don’t look forward to __67__ (create) these habits, such as eating breakfast, regular physical exercise and enough sleep. People complain these habits are so 68 (bore) and difficult to achieve that they have 69 (little) time to spend on things they like to do. So people should change their attitudes first. What if you thought of chocolate as a kind of boring food What if you thought of physical exercise as something 70 (relax)
