Basketball is a much-loved and active sport that is enjoyed by many for fun and exercise. It is over 100 years old and is played by more than 100 million people in over 200 countries. It is believed that the first basketball game in history was played on December 21, 1891. Then in 1936 in Berlin, it became an event at the Olympics.

Basketball was invented by a Canadian doctor named James Naismith, who was born in 1861. When he was a college teacher, he was asked to think of a game that could be played in the winter. Dr. Naismith created a game to be played inside on a hard floor. Dr. Naismith

意为“不但 / 不仅……而且……”，连接两个并列成分，如主语、谓语、宾语、表语、状语等，但所强调的重点是后面的部分。
【提示】当not only ... but (also) ... 连接两个主语时，遵循就近原则，即谓语动词与后一个主语在人称和数上保持一致。

1) “the number of +可数名词复数”表示
“……的数量”。该短语作主语时，谓语动词用单数。
