“AlphaGo” VS Ke Jie
Humans thought computer programs could not beat them in Go games (围棋). But AlphaGo, a program of Google’s company DeepMind, proved them wrong. From May 23 to 27, AlphaGo played against the world’s No 1 Go player Ke Jie in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. AlphaGo beat the 19-year-old Chinese 3-0.
“I was shocked,” Ke said in a news conference (新闻发布会) after the three games. “Many moves of AlphaGo would never happen in a human competition.”
AlphaGo is an example of artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能). AI is when computers or computer programs have smart behavior(行为) and think or act like a human. Scientists are now trying to make AI do everything from driving cars to writing stories. This worries some people. UK scientist Stephen Hawking even said that the “development of AI could mean the end of humans”.
However, DeepMind doesn’t think this will happen. It believes that AI can help people solve hard scientific(科学的), technical(科技的) and medical(医药) problems, like dealing with medical data (数据). “This isn’t about man competing with AI, but using it as a tool to learn new knowledge together.”
