Electrical devices (电子仪器) could soon use power made by human energy. Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking, British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device.
The device connects to a person’s knee. As the person walks, the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To do this, the device helps with the slowing down movement of the leg, the movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six minutes.
There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people who work in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also be used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers (起博器) and it could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs.
The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy, but the researchers hope to make a lighter, less costly version. An improved version should be ready in one year.
The developers hope the device will one day help developing countries; nearly twenty five percent of people around the world live without electric power.
A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of the University of Pennsylvania. He created a bag carried on a person’s back that also produces power from walking. The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag, but the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.
4. What is the disadvantage of the experimental version of the device
A. It is too heavy for the walker to bear.
B. It is too complex for people to use.
C. It is too expensive for most people to afford.
D. It will slow down one’s walking speed.
5. Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new device________.
A. produces power without adding a heavy load to the walker
B. can produce more power in a much shorter time
C. needs to be equipped with a battery
D. can help the walker walk faster
6. What would be the best title for the passage
A. First device powered by walking will soon be on the market.
B. Advanced technology brings in a new way to operate heart pacemakers.
C. Device gives new meaning to the idea of power walking.
D. Human energy will become a main source of electricity.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. C

My best friend and I made our first trip to Ireland less than a year ago. I wasn’t very excited about it at the very beginning. But my uncle wanted me to go and offered to pay for my trip. Then I did. All of the words “magical charming or memorable” don’t even touch what Ireland is. Our favorites were Kilkenny, Cobh, and Killarney. We did a self-drive tour, which was not as hard as people made it sound.
We stayed in a castle in Dublin for two days, where my ancestors came from. The town we thought we might be bored in was Kilkenny, but we loved every minute we were there. There were so many places to explore and the pictures we took were beautiful.
Our driver was so informative and entertaining that he knew just where to stop for the best photos. And seeing the little village of Cobh and knowing it was the last stop for the Titanic were so touching. We loved the visitor’s center there and the little shops. We never got any bad food there. It was so mouth-watering at every stop! And when we stayed in Westmeath and looked out for our window to see the Trim Castle and found some scenes from Brave Heart were filmed there, we were so impressed. Again, more beautiful pictures were taken in that tiny town.
We love the country, the people, the food, and the magic! We would go back very soon. I was so indebted to my uncle who had given me the chance to be here.
The one piece of advice I would offer is to bring your own washcloths. Only one of our hotels supplied them, because people there think they are not environmentally-friendly. I have no words to adequately describe our trip. Go, explore the small villages, eat and enjoy! I still look at my pictures and can’t believe I was actually there.

Regardless of how badly I wanted to keep the puppy, we decided to look for the owner. We looked all day, but we failed. We talked about whether we should keep looking or if we should look the next day. We all agreed to look for its owner the next day.
So, the next day my family and I looked for the dog's owner. It was so hard looking for its owner. We were looking for flyers(传单)that involved the puppy, but no luck. We wouldn't have quit because it's a puppy.
“We won't stop looking,” my mom and dad said. We were going to take care of the puppy until we found its owner.
When we woke up in the morning, we went to a pet shop to buy the puppy some dog food. After that we went back home to feed the puppy the dog food that we had just bought. After we fed the puppy, we gave it a nice bath. It was so dirty that the fur was black and sticky, but after we gave it a bath, it turned white. And I noticed there was a collar (狗项圈)on him, which said “Coby”. After we gave him a bath, we went to look for the p uppy's owner, but my mom stayed at home, and it was only my dad and me this time.
We continued looking more and more until we found flyers. “We looked at it.”it said.

She told us her address at once; then we went to it.
We found the lady’s house, and then we knocked on the door. A lady opened the door, and when she saw the puppy, she screamed with joy. We handed her the puppy, feeling proud. She wanted to give us a reward for taking care of her puppy for her, but we said it was OK because we were really happy to help. So we went home tired but content, telling my mom the whole thing.
The device could also be used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers (起博器), and it could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs.
A First device powered by walking will soon be on the market.
B. Advanced technology brings in a new way to operate heart pacemakers.
C. Device gives new meaning to the idea of power walking.
D. Human energy will become a main source of electricity.

My best friend and I made our first trip to Ireland less than a year ago. I wasn’t very excited about it at the very beginning. But my uncle wanted me to go and offered to pay for my trip. Then I did. All of the words “magical, charming or memorable” don’t even touch what Ireland is. Our favorites were Kilkenny, Cobh, and Killarney. We did a self-drive tour, which was not as hard as people made it sound.
We stayed in a castle in Dublin for two days where my ancestors came from.

One morning, my family and I woke up and went to eat breakfast——until we heard barking and scratching at the door. When my mom opened the door, we saw a puppy(小狗). We looked around to see if we saw its owner, but there was no one. We took it inside and fed it.
“Lost Dog: Please Help if Found.” Then we looked at the picture;it looked exactly like Coby. We were all happy we found a flyer that was for Cody.
