My teenage son Karl became withdrawn(孤僻) after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. In this way he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and asked God for help. "Please God, I can't do anything more for my son. I'm at the end of my rope. I'm giving the whole thing up to you."
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. "I want to talk to you about Karl's absences." Before he could say another word, I choked up (哽咽) and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. "I love my son, but I just don't know what to do. I've tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It's out of my hands." For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, "Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year " I nodded. "That was me. Did you dress up as a panda this Halloween as part of National Geographic Kids’ Mission: Animal Rescue challenge Well, panda keepers in China take it a step further by covering themselves with pandas’ excrement (排泄物)! That's to cover the human smell. By wearing panda suits when handling the baby pandas, keepers reduce the animals’ stress as much as possible.
At the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin, staff dress up as ghosts---wearing white to hide their bodies---and use a bird-shaped hand puppet to interact with baby cranes (鹤) living at the foundation. "We try to replicate what actual parents do," says Kim Boardman, the assistant manager of birds. “The puppet offers natural food, catches insects, and teaches baby cranes to hunt for food."
Biologists wanted to see how salmon (鲑鱼) reacted to spirit bears—black bears with a genetic change that gives them white fur—compared to more common black bears with black fur. So, they wore either white or black clothes and stayed in a fishing hole. The salmon were less scared by biologists wearing white costume(化装服), suggesting that spirit bears may be more successful at catching fish; possibly because the fish don't recognize the rare bears as dangers.
To see how moose (驼鹿) around Yellowstone National Park would react to the smell of wolves that were coming back to the area, biologist Joel Berger wore a moose suit. The suit allowed him to get close and drop wolves’ excrement near the moose. The scientists discovered that the moose had forgotten to run when they smelled a wolf, but the moose quickly learned to avoid the wolves when they returned to the area!

When someone gives you advice, listen without judgment, try to find value in what you’re hearing, and say: “Thank you”. This wise advice is easy to understand yet hard to practice. I’ll give you an example from my life when I totally blew it in terms of practising what I teach.
In my work I travel constantly. I always put off going to the airport until the last second. My wife, Lyda, was sitting next to me in the front seat. I was racing along and not paying much attention. Lyda cried out! “Look out! There is a red light up ahead.”
Being a trained behavioral science professional—who teaches others the value of encouraging advice—I naturally screamed at her: “I know there is a red light up ahead! Don’t you think I can see ” When we arrived at the airport, Lyda didn’t speak to me. I wondered why she seemed mad at me.
During the flight to New York, I did a cost-benefit analysis. I asked myself: “What was the cost of just listening when Lyda called out the warning Zero.” I then reasoned: “What was the potential benefit What could have been saved ” Several potential benefits came to mind, including her life, my life, and the lives of other people.
I landed in New York feeling ashamed of myself. I immediately called Lyda and told her my cost-benefit story. I convinced her: “The next time you help me with my driving, I am just going to say, ‘Thank you.”
A few months passed, and I had long forgotten the incident. Again, I was racing off to the airport, when Lyda cried out: “Look out for the red light!” I was embarrassed, and then shouted: “Thank you!”
I’m a long way from perfect, but I’m getting better. My suggestion is that when some people may tell you things like “Look out for the red light”, you should remember that there is possibly some potential benefit and say: “Thank you.”

A Beautiful Place in China
March 19, 2021
By Li Jin
The Place I like best is Yangliuqing Ancient Town, which is situated by the Grand Canal in Xiqing District.
I like the place not only because it is my hometown where I was born and brought up, but also because it has the famous New Year Pictures, representing the local culture and well-known both at home and abroad. Besides, the Shi Family Mansion, the largest of its kind in North China with its typically beautiful brick carvings, has attracted large numbers of tourists each year.
I am proud of being a citizen of Yangliuqing and I firmly believe that my hometown will become more impressive with the development of the Grand Canal Economy.(112)
