Orlie Reid Jr. had been teaching his own classes for four years when he was honored as Teen of the Week. Only 14, he was leading a twice-weekly, free martial arts(武术) class at the Robinwood Community Center. He had been taking karate(空手道) classes since he was 6 and quickly had his black belt. In school, he got an “A” average and longed to be a psychotherapist(心理治疗师), like his father Orlie Reid Sr.
Orlie Reid Jr. realized his dream. He got married in 2000, after the couple earned their master’s degrees in social work from University of Maryland, Baltimore. With his wife and business partner Natashia, he had a psychotherapy center, Rhema Counseling Services. They set it up in 2008. The center offered personal and group therapy, as well as couples and family guidance. “My father taught me to prepare myself to do the career that I would love to do even if I didn’t get paid for it,” he said.
He has come a long way from the 14-year-old who once ordered a student to do five pushups(俯卧撑) as a punishment when the student was acting up in his karate class. Orlie, now 38, struggles to follow the example set by his father and his brother Bruce Reid, older than him by ten years. They encouraged him to help people, and to be aware of the influence he could have on others.
His father founded Concerned Black Men at Annapolis High, a group which offered teens the opportunity to guide other teens. After Orlie Jr.’s high school graduation, his father took him and 12 other teens to China. They traveled to Beijing and Xi’an. The teens raised and received donations to pay for the trip.
An unchanged thing for him and his family is the importance of Christ(基督) in their lives. He serves elders at the church, Evangel Assembly. “It is a big part of who I am and who I have become,” he said.
41. From Paragraph 1, we know that when he was young, Orlie Reid Jr. ______.

A. is very important for Christ
B. doesn’t realize who he has become
C. usually goes to church on Sundays
D. comes from a family with a religious belief.
45. What can we learn from Orlie Reid Jr.’s story
A. Families are important to children’s growing up.

Lately there has been a push for more “progressive” meetings, where the child is present during the meeting. I think this way is a mistake; children should not be present at parent-teacher meeting.
Throughout the year teachers and their students build strong relationships and learn from one another. Take me for example. I try to build a child’s confidence so he can achieve certain goals and work hard to climb the ladder of success. In return the child looks up to me, as somebody to be relied upon to help with learning. Never have I wanted to break that trust.
During the parent-teacher meeting, teachers must be honest with parents and let them know what areas of learning their child needs help with. But how can you talk about a child’s weakness when he is present It destroys self-image and self-worth. Having children present for parent-teacher meetings forces the loving educational environment that the child knows and loves into an interrogation(审问) room.
Children must be responsible for their work in order to grow and reach the areas in which they are most challenged. The parents need to give children a help in areas where children struggle because education is not a job for one person.
But how can a teacher be completely honest with parents about what they need to do with a child present in the room without hurting that child’s self-worth Believe me, children already know what areas they need to work on. They don’t need it to be said right in front of their parents. We want to inspire children and not prevent their development in any way.
Parents must be supporters for their children. So when a school says it is important to bring a child into a parent-teacher meeting, the parent has a right to stand up and fight for the child.
46. Who is the author
A. A teacher. B. A parent.
C. A school child. D. A government official.
47. What does the author mean by saying “education is not a job for one person” in Paragraph 4
A. Parents should study what their children are taught.

D. Students should ask for help when having difficulty in studying.
48. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 5
A. Students’ honesty. B. Students’ self-worth.
C. Students’ weakness. D. Students’ development.
49.In the author’s opinion, progressive meetings cause a conflict(冲突) between______.
A. teachers’ responsibilities and their rights
B. students’ shortcomings and their feelings
C. parents’ expectations and students’ behaviors
D. learning environment and academic achievement
50.What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To introduce how to build up students’ trust in teachers.
B. To discuss the relationship between schools and families.

Back when I was in my twenties, I worked in an office in Philadelphia. I spent my day there crunching(运算) lifeless numbers. The job was really boring. However, it had its happy moments, like when I received a hard-earned promotion(晋升).
It was different on Tuesdays. On Tuesday nights, I walked to a nearby center to my “another job”. It was a world apart from my job during the day. I would make my way to a large room where I was greeted by shouts of excitement---“Miss Maggie is here!” This enthusiasm came from a group of kids who were all mine to teach. On these Tuesday nights, I taught volleyball for athletes of the Special Olympics.
As I entered this large room one Tuesday night, I noticed that Brian was sitting in the corner by himself, as usual. He came from a family that treated him badly. Unfortunately, this caused him a lot of anger and sadness.
As the other kids started to exercise, I walked over to Brian and sat down. I said hello, but he gave me only an angry mumble(咕哝) in return.
I gave Brian a gentle pat and told him that we’d love to have him join us. Once the kids had warmed up, I began my lesson. As the lesson progressed, Brian came out of his corner. Nervously, he approached me and asked if he could play. I put my arm around him and replied with an enthusiastic yes.
Working with Brian each week, I knew I had to be patient, and this experience taught me a valuable lesson. Finally, I became friends with Brian. I knew that I had to stay positive and make sure he knew that I was there for him no matter what happened.

With the air pollution becoming more and more serious, our living environment is getting worse and worse. People can hardly breathe any fresh air. They have to wear masks when they go out. To make things worse, millions of people die from illnesses related to air pollution every year. So I think that something must be done to change the situation before it is too late. For example, we can close down some factories that send out too much smoke. Besides,we can limit the number of cars running on the roads. Only in this way can we hope to have a clear sky and bright sunshine in the future.
