Never leave food unattended. Most kitchen fires occur because food is left unattended on the stove or in the oven. Never leave food that is being cooked on the store unattended. Never leave the kitchen or the house—even for a short time—when food is being cooked.

Clean cooking surfaces. The accumulation of grease(油渍) on cooking surface can lead to disaster. Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease accumulation, which can start fires.
Have proper safety equipment. Make sure there is a working smoke detector in the kitchen. Test and dust each alarm monthly, and change the batteries at least once a year. Have a small fire extinguisher(灭火器)in the kitchen. Teach your loved one how to use it. If necessary, write instructions for use and tape it to the extinguisher.

Feb. 4 was a pretty special day for Leslie Fiet who was the owner of Mini’s Cupcakes. She was busy baking cookies, when her cell phone buzzed (嗡嗡声) with an Amber Alert, meaning a statewide search for a child and a black SUV. She remembered having seen a black SUV nearby, and went out to compare the license plate with the one listed in the Amber Alert. “The license plate matches, and at that moment, my heart is beating fast,” Fiet, a mother of two children, said.
Inside the black SUV was 3-year-old Bella Martinez, whose disappearance had caused the Amber Alert. The police said Bella’s father, Pedro, had just stepped into a convenience store earlier that afternoon, when someone stole his black SUV and drove it about 6 miles to the cupcake shop’s parking lot , where it was abandoned.
Fiet was going to call 911 right away, but when she saw that the baby was hysterically (歇斯底里地) crying inside the car, she changed her mind. “I just dropped my phone, ran out of the door, and dove in through the passenger’s side window to grab the baby out in case somebody was in the driver’s side and attacked her,” she recalled.
Luckily, with no driver present, she was able to catch Bella from a car seat, race inside the shop, and lock the door, where she called 911. Fiet gave Bella a Care Bears toy and read her a “Puss in Boots” book while waiting for emergency personnel and the child’s parents to arrive. “I had Bella calmed down within five minutes. She just wanted her mom and dad.”
“A plain clothes officer arrived first and Bella’s parents came 30 minutes later,” she added. The suspect who stole and abandoned the SUV was arrested the same day. But the story didn’t end there. The next day, when word spread that Fiet had saved the baby, fans throughout the city showed up at her shop. Customers formed a line in front of the door to buy cookies.
Now, it’s her friends who are offering help, assisting with the crowded shop.
