Parents whose children show a special interest in a sport feel very difficult to make a decision about their children’s careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sports men or women For many children it means starting schoolwork very young, and going out with friends and other interests have to take a second place. It’s very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.
Another problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from government for the best young sportsmen and women. If this help cannot be given, it means that it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child’s development and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, etc.
Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional (专业的) trainers, however, believe that it is only by training young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. It is clear that very few people do reach the top, and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of training.

38. Which of the following statements is NOT true

This must be a very stressful time for you and your family. On the one hand, of course you’re really proud of your father for being so brave in the army. On the other hand, I’m sure that some of you wish that he would be a little less brave and stay home with you!
Here’s my advice: Talk to your father now, before he leaves, and tell him how you are feeling. Don’t worry about letting him know you’re anxious---his leaving does affect you. Sometimes when we’re really scared, some of us have a tendency (倾向) to shut down, but in a situation like this, both you and your father need to communicate with each other, so you’re going to need to open up.
And P.S.: You can support him and still let him in on what’s going on inside your head. Try: “I’m so proud of you, but I am afraid too---I’m so scared of losing you.” I have a feeling that once you speak these words out, the heaviness in your heart will feel a lot lighter.
It’s normal to feel this way---not expressing your concerns is what you both expect. Once you do tell him, I’m sure your father will be grateful for your feelings, and he might even be able to give you some details about the nature of his work across the ocean, which might make you feel better. At the very least, you will be glad you shared your feelings with him in person before he goes so far away.
Another idea: You two can make a promise that you’ll both do something while he’s away: like, you can agree that every Sunday at 9 p.m., you will both look at the brightest star in the sky and think of each other. This way, even if you can’t talk, you can feel a little closer to each other.
41. According to the passage, we can infer that _____.
the father is going to fight abroad soon
the father is going to defend their homeland
the son will travel with the father
the son likes to exchange opinions with his father
42. The underlined phrase “shut down” in paragraph 2 probably means _____.

D. hide something at heart
43. All the following are good suggestions EXCEPT ______.

praying(祈祷) for your father in secret
speaking out your own thoughts
thinking of each other by looking at stars
44. Where is the passage probably taken from
A. A composition book. B. A textbook.
C. A letter of advice to a kid. D. An article on morals(道德)

Within a few short years, girls in Europe have become heavier smokers than boys, for reasons experts still fail to understand, according to a British study presented last week to an international conference on smoking.
Anti-smoking activists at the second “Tobacco or Health” conference in the Canary Islands pointed out that while adults were giving up smoking in ever growing numbers, more and more young people were taking up the habits, particularly girls.
One 15-year-old in four is a regular smoker, according to a study made in 27 countries in Europe and the United States, Canada and Israel ---by Edinburgh University together with the World Health Organization.
In Western Europe, girls were more likely than boys to smoke in Germany or in England. One third of the girls were smokers compared to one in four boys. In Eastern Europe, the girls “still fall behind” those in the Western Europe but were “catching up” quickly, said the study.
The study dealt with the behavior of 15-year-old in seven European countries over the four-year period.
The percentages of young women smoking went from 17 percent to 36 percent in Austria, from 17 percent to 28 percent in Norway, from 21 percent to 28 percent in Hungary.
In the seven countries and regions including Austria, Finland, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales--- more girls than boys smoked, with the exception of Hungary.
46. This passage shows us such a fact that more and more _____ in Europe were giving up smoking.
A. boys B. girls C. old people D. adults

A. The number of boy smokers is larger than that of girl smokers.
B. The number of boy smokers is as large as that of girl smokers.
C. The number of boy smokers is as small as that of girl smokers.
D. The number of boy smokers is smaller than that of girl smokers.
48. Which of the following countries is the right choice where the number of young women smokers increases fastest
A. Austria B. Hungary C. Norway D. Switzerland
49. What is the main idea of this passage
A. To report something interesting that happened in England.
B. To introduce something about girl smokers in Europe

D. To warn young people around the world against smoking.
