Florence Nightingale was named after her birthplace, Florence. Italy. When she was almost a year old, she returned with her family to England.
Florence often helped her mother deliver (运送) food to the poor and sick. Her family was shocked because nursing was not a respected profession (职业).
But Florence was determined. She studied books on medicine. Later, she visited hospitals in France, Germany and Ireland and learned everything she could.
In 1854, Britain was at war with Russia, Florence went to the British hospital in Scutari and she was shocked. The hospital left men lying on the floor, and rats were running everywhere. Many soldiers died before receiving help.
The doctors wouldn't listen to Florence because they didn't like the idea of women in army hospitals – until one day 500 unexpected casualties (伤亡者) arrived. Florence made changes, making sure the men were washed and their injuries were cared for. Every night she would check the patients with her lamp.
When she returned home after the war, a fund had been set up in her honor. Many of the soldiers she had nursed had made contributions (捐款). Now she could set up the Nightingale Training School in London.
After years of hard work, Florence Nightingale saw cleaner and more cheerful hospitals. All of this was because of the “lady with the lamp”.
A. Nursing became an honored profession.
B. There was no running water and no heat.
C. She knew she had much to learn about nursing.
D. Florence saw the soldiers' health had improved.
E. As she grew older, she decided to become a nurse.
F. They soon realized that Florence could give a hand.
G. Upon returning home, she was an expert on hospital management.

After attending another parent meeting about my 7-year-old child's behavior, I didn't know what to do. It was the second school we had tried for Nathan and, as always, everything was being done for my child's needs. It was also having bad influence on Nathan. He would come home and say, "Mom, I hate my life. I do not want to live any more." I was afraid that my son was beginning to suffer from depression(抑郁) and that I was losing him. We needed help.
By the age of seven, Nathan had already had three surgeries (外科手术) for his ears. He was in great pain, which made it difficult for him to learn or pay attention. Despite Nathan's bad condition, the staff at two former schools seemed as if they didn't care. They often forgot to deal with his medication(药剂). As a result of many times of ear infections (感染), Nathan had hearing loss. To make things worse, Nathan's speech was not very good. Children would make fun of him and Nathan began to fall behind in study.
When I first set foot into Ripley House Charter School, I knew this was the school for my son. It felt positive from the moment I entered. From the start, Mrs. Elsen and her staff heard my concern over Nathan. Mrs. Elsen dealt with my concern, not with empty words but with action.
That day, Nathan came home from his first day of school saying, "Mom, I love school!" By the end of the week he was saying, "Mom, I like my life. I have a good life." Ripley House Charter School gave me my son back and saved our lives. Thank you for giving me back what we had lost—HOPE.

Last week, we talked about the conflict(冲突) between sleepy teenagers and early morning classes. Many people commented(评论) on our website.
For example, Damla Ece in Turkey wrote: I agree with the idea of starting lessons later so teenagers can feel better in the morning. But sleeping more than seven hours can be wasting time for students.
Tran in Vietnam disagreed: I think teenagers, on average, need eight to ten hours of sleep every day. It's useless to try to force them to concentrate while they can't concentrate.
Afshin Heydari from Iran wrote: schools should start early to avoid heavy traffic later in the morning.
And Suze from Jordan wrote: When I was a teenager, I enjoyed taking my courses as early as possible. That way I could find a long time in the day to do my own activities.
But Azra from Kyrgyzstan said: the reason why schools start early here is a lack of classrooms.
And Joruji in Japan wrote: When I was a teenager, I used to get up before six to go to school, which was far from home, and I don't remember having problems. I think nowadays the Internet, TV games and cell phones make teens go to sleep later.
Thirty-year-old Kika in Spain said: In my opinion, young people are very lazy.
But Dennis Jin disagreed: For high school students in China, we must reach the classroom at 6:20 in the morning and be back home usually at 10:00 in the evening. Then we'll have some extra schoolwork to do. Can you imagine how long we could sleep every day
Teenagers are not the only ones who suffer. Kathy in Canada wrote: My daughter likes complaining about everything in the morning, and I know that this is from lack of sleep. I wish schools should change their start time to 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning.
And Naima Star in Libya wrote: Getting up so early in the morning and leaving the warm bed is so difficult, especially in the cold weather. It reminds me of that old song: "It's nice to get up in the morning, but it's nicer to stay in bed."
(1).The passage is most likely to be taken from______.
A.a personal letter
B.a travel guide
C.a geography book

(2).About teenagers' sleeping time, which people belong to one group
A.Joruji, Tran and Kika.

Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make sure yours builds up.

The number one thing you'll probably do is book your flight if you want to travel to another country. But in some countries, you won't be able to fly directly.
Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, as a 109-acre area in the middle of Rome, doesn't have its own airport, but visitors can easily get there via Italy's capital.
Similarly, San Marino, the fifth smallest country in the world, is also surrounded by Italian land. It has a population of a little more than 33,000 and sits just nine miles from Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini, Italy.
The second-smallest country in the world is Monaco, with a population of more than 38, 500. To get there, you'll have to go through France's Nice Cote d'Azur Airport, which is just a 25-minute car ride away from Monaco. Perhaps that's why developers didn't bother creating anything like a short flight.
Interestingly enough, the third and fourth smallest countries, Nauru and Tuvalu have their own airports, but the fifth and sixth smallest don't We already mentioned San Marino, and to get to Liechtenstein, you'll have to go through Switzerland's St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport, 24 miles away from the capital.
No such luck trying to fly into Andorra, which only requires a 25-mile drive to get from one end of the country to the other. B.The fifth smallest country in the world has a little less than 33, 000 residents.
C.To get to Liechtenstein, you'll have to go through Italy's airport.
D.Visitors can arrive at Andorra through Spain or France.
