Unit4Do it yourself阅读理解练习
A
DIY is very popular in China now. Yang Chen works for a computer business in Beijing. Though he enjoys his work, it is hard for him to relax(放松)after work.
“For a long time, I had no choice(选择)except going to a bar for a drink and karaoke to relax myself,” he said.
One day when he saw many toy dogs in a toy shop, he had an idea. “Why not do some kinds of things and relax myself ” Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else. The things that he had made by himself didn’t look as professionally(专业地)made as those in the shops, but he liked doing it.“It is not as much fun to play with things which are bought expensively from the shops,” he said. Now his bookshelves are full of many kinds of things he has made. They are very beautiful, and his family and friends like them very much.
More and more young people are like Yang, making or creating(创造)things on their own. They like to do them themselves.
Though making things with our own hands may take much time, some people, now known as
DIYers—do-it-yourselfers, enjoy doing them very much. They can make all kinds of things they like. DIY is becoming more and more popular in China. It may be new to the young, yet many people remember when it was a way of life.
During the 1960s and 1970s, when there were not enough living things for people to live on, they had to use their own hands to do many things. Whitewashing the wall or making clothes was a part of life because there was no other choice. If you wanted something done, you had to do it yourself; and if you needed something, you made it yourself.

A scientist named Charles had a strange idea. He wanted to invent a new kind of car which could go without a driver. It could also be used at a living room. That means you can go anywhere on your sofa in the car. You might say that it's impossible. But Charles succeeded in making it in a factory and named it Tridika.
Tridika has no wheels and it starts working when it reaches the magnetic levitation tracks(磁悬浮轨道). It takes its energy from the tracks. And it works in the same way as a magnetic train. It moves very fast. As everyone knows, cities are developing rapidly. There are more and more cars running on the road. So parking space is limited. Sometimes it's hard to find a place to park. Tridika can solve this problem easily because it needn't park on the ground. Actually, it can park on the outside wall of the building with the help of an elevator system(电梯系统). In this way, much parking space can be saved. When Tridika parks itself in front of your apartment, you can get into your room directly. Of course, there must be a side door in the outside wall. Then Tridika becomes another living room. It's really amazing, isn't it
Tridika can hold six passengers. So you can go on vacation in it with your family in your free time. Of course it can also be used at an office while you are travelling on the road. That is to say, you can travel and work at the same time.

DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how to DIY.
English people like DIY. There is a saying in UK----"As Englishman's home is his castle". Huge number of people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful "castles". If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people have discovered
the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn at present, many people can not afford a big house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.
DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to get together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can't understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though most DIY projects are started with the best intentions. Many of them may not get finished. DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don't care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.
Therefore, DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it is thought to be if we bite off more than we can chew. Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY.
