Generally speaking, newly born babies are not beautiful. They are wrinkled(多皱的)or hairless,or they have an angry look on their face. They seem to say,"Get away! I hate everybody." But to a parent, that hairless, wrinkled, angry-faced baby is the most beautiful and perfect child in the world. When that proud father or mother asks you, "Well, what do you think…isn't she beautiful?" What are you going to say?Is this the time for the truth? Of course not!
You look that father in the eye and say,"Yes,she is! She is really a beauty. She's one in a million. She's going to be a movie star! I can tell! She's as beautiful as a picture."
In English, this is a white lie. White lies don't hurt people. They are not cruel or angry words. People use them to make a difficult thing a little easier. When people don't want to meet someone,or eat something new that they really don't like at a friend's house, they tell a white lie. They are trying to be kind. They feel that being polite is sometimes more important. A doctor tells white lie in order to make a patient feel that his health is not so worse and then the patient may become optimistic.
From what is said above,we may draw a conclusion that we should not treat white lies as obstacles in life, and that sometimes telling a lie should not be associated with the issue of being dishonest. Some white lies can encourage you to be better.
4. What purpose does the first paragraph serve? ______
A. To emphasize the beauty of newly born babies.
B. To show parents' selfless devotion to their children.
C. To introduce the topic of a special kind of lie.
D. To use examples to prove lies are common in daily life.
5. Parents are usually ______ when their new babies are born.
A. impatient B. tired C. delighted D. careless
6. The underlined word "white" in the last paragraph means " ______ " .
A. kind B. impolite
C. the white color D. angry
7. Which of the following is a white lie? ______
A. You tell a parent that the newly-born baby is ugly.
B. Your friend's bag isn't beautiful but you say it is.
C. You broke the window but you say you didn't.
D. You tell your friend that her new haircut is terrible.

On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish - sand eels- lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland?
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout. Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful;anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances - sometimes over 150 kilometers. It's very cold up there and everything soon freezes solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009,dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012,fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico In Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change, global warming and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?
8. What was the rain like on 24 August 1918? ______
A. It was very heavy. B. It fell around England.
C. It lasted quite a long time. D. It caused many human deaths.
9. What do we know about the sand eels that landed on Sunderland? ______
A. They were few in number.
B. They came in different sizes.
C. They were still alive when landing.
D. They probably came from the North Sea.
10. What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 3 refer to? ______
A. Clouds. B. Waterspouts.
C. Strong winds. D. The waters of the sea.
11. In the end, what does the author probably care most about? ______
A. Our health. B. Our environment.
C. The wild animals. D. The news reports.

High speeds, cool looks, and unusual names are what a typical American looks for when buying a car. This is a wasteful method because the cars we buy don't fit our lifestyles of thriftiness(节俭). But we feel powerful when we drive huge cars,so that's why we buy them.
More people should drive hybrids, which are powered by a gas engine but also keeps a charge in a bank of batteries. As a result, they burn less gas and save more energy. You may complain,"They are not cool." But what are you going to say when your planet gets so fouled up(弄乱)that you need a gas mask just to go outside?Well, that's what's going to happen if we don't act soon. Hybrids may cost more, but they will end up saving our life one day.
Gasoline cars are inefficient ones that chew up cash. The best ones get only around 40 miles per gallon. We need to change our habits or we are going to run out of fossil fuel, and then no cars will be traveling down the street. Gasoline cars also pollute the air and create breathing problems.
Some problems we will have in the future if we continue using gasoline cars are high levels of air pollution and groundwater toxicity. We will also use up our supply of fossil fuels. We may cause a large increase in the speed of global warming, which will result in a rise in temperature and in turn bake our planet and all its living things.
Cars should be bought not based on looks, but because they work well and help save the environment. Hybrids fulfill this. If enough people used them,we wouldn't be as worried about global warming. We are at a point where we can only do one thing:reduce the amount of fossil fuels we use. If we don't,we may spell our own doom and end up creating natural disasters that we cannot control.
12. According to the passage, hybrids ______ .
A. make the air smell bad
B. pollute the groundwater
C. increase the speed of global warming
D. are more costly

A. runs faster B. looks beautiful
C. is environmentally friendly D. costs a fortune
15. The purpose of this passage is to ______ .
A. introduce what kind of car uses less gas
B. give people advice on how to buy a cool car
C. remind people of some problems they will have in the future
D. expect people to consider the environmental problems when buying a car
