The Mid-Autumn Festival in China
As a country with a long history, China also has many traditional festivals, such as the Spring Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and so on. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. The Mid-Autumn Festival is enjoyable for Chinese, because it is a time for families to have a family reunion(团圆) by having a big family meal and admiring the full moon together. At the same time, families will prepare a lot of delicious food for this special day like mooncakes, fruits and other desserts, because they see it as a time to give thanks for food in the autumn and everything people enjoy in life. More importantly, they share their wishes and show their love to each other.
The beginning of this festival has to do with a story of Chang’e. To stop Pang Meng from stealing the magic medicine, Chang’e drank it all. Then she became a fairy and flew to the moon. Hou Yi missed Chang’e so much that he laid out her favorite fruits and desserts under the bright and round moon. Gradually, eating mooncakes became a ritual. All mooncakes carry one thing in common — a symbol of prosperity(兴旺)and family reunion in traditional Chinese culture.
