Read paragraphs 4 and 5 and complete the following tasks.
According to the writer, in what ways does our planet seem to be getting significantly smaller
Analyze the changes that have occurred in different aspects and complete the table. For any information not available in the passage, please infer from the context or refer to your own knowledge.
In the past Today
Travel Travellers spent months at sea. Travellers sit on a plane for a few hours.
Clothing and buildings There were unfamiliar styles. They are very similar.
Recreation People enjoyed completely different local forms of recreation. People enjoy the same sports, music, films and TV shows.
Consumption People bought locally produced products/domestic products or home-made goods. People buy the same products from huge, global companies.
Language Languages were diversified and people normally spoke only their mother tongues or dialects. Many local languages are threatened with extinction with more people speaking certain languages.
Answer the following questions.
How many languages does the writer probably speak
The writer probably speaks three languages: Baras, Indonesian, and English.
Why are languages disappearing around the world
By using the example of Baras, the writer implies that languages are disappearing because globalization causes people to migrate and the migrants usually learn the common language for effective communication. They then may give up using their own languages.
Read paragraph 6 and answer the questions.
What does “it” in the sentence “Where will it stop ” refer to
It refers to the extinction of languages caused by globalization.
Does the writer prefer to live in a world with no cultural differences Why
No, the writer wouldn’t prefer that. The writer thinks the idea is disappointing because there will no longer be any of the wonderful differences between different cultures.
III. Post-reading
Voice your opinion:
Do you think the situation imagined by the writer in the last paragraph will happen in reality Why or why not
Answers may vary.
(For reference) No, I don’t think globalization is sure to result in the disappearance of languages and cultures. While it is undeniable that globalization can pose threats to a certain language and culture, it also presents a tremendous opportunity for cultural diversity. In China, for example, increased participation in global trade not only boosted the economy; it also allowed the Chinese to spread their culture around the world, whether through Peking operas or traditional festivals or food. Meanwhile, the influence brought by the introduction of foreign cultures has increased awareness of Chinese people’s cultural identity, stimulating citizens to defend, preserve, and restore the cultural features they care about the most.
IV. Interaction
Think about the following question and have a discussion with your classmates.
Do you think globalization is unavoidable Why
Answers may vary.
(For reference) Yes, globalization is unavoidable.

课题:Reading and interaction: Going global (II): Deep reading
课时学习目标:
通过阅读分析作者写作策略理解其写作意图;
结合自身探讨全球化对于生活及社会的影响。
I. Revision
The topic of this unit is “Progress ”. Try to explain what the question mark implies based on your understanding of the reading passage.
Answers may vary.
(For reference) The question mark is intended to set us thinking whether globalization leads to progress in human society or not. In the reading passage, after illustrating how globalization has made people from different parts of the world start to live similar lives, the writer further expresses his concern about the negative impact of globalization on regional languages and cultures. It seems to the writer that globalization is robbing the world of its diversity, which is obviously bad for the human race.
II. Deep reading
How does the writer make his argument in the passage Complete the table. Pay attention to the words in bold.
Sentences in the passage My explanation Writing Strategies
In October 2011, the seven billionth baby was born, and experts predict that there will be ten billion of us before the end of this century. Guiding question: Why does the writer mention these figures These figures make it easier for readers to understand the alarming rate of increase, and make the writer's argument stronger. Statistics
If you said “hello” to a different person every second, it would take you 222 years to greet everyone on the planet. Guiding question: Why does the writer mention the imagined situation The writer mentions the imagined situation to make it easier for the readers to understand how big the population is. 222 years is a length of time that we can easily form a picture of in our mind. It is something we can relate to. Imagined situation
In the past, travellers from Europe to Indonesia spent months at sea. Now you just have to sit on a plane for a few hours. Guiding question: What is the writer’s purpose of contrasting travel in the past with that in modern times The writer uses contrast here to show that the planet seems to be getting smaller as a result of the development of faster transportation. It also shows how advances in technology have made travel more convenient so that people from different parts of the world are becoming more connected than ever before. Contrast
I grew up in a small village where everyone spoke Baras, one of Indonesia’s local languages.... The only regular Baras speakers at present are the older people who have stayed in the country,... Guiding question: What does the writer imply about the Baras language The writer implies that Baras is dying because fewer young people are speaking it at present and it is the older generations who are regularly speaking the language in his small village. That's because globalization causes people to migrate and the migrants usually learn the common language and give up using their own languages. This is an example to show how globalization can cause problems for local languages. Illustration
Where will it stop Will there be a time in the future when Earth’s billions all speak just one language, and there are no cultural differences to divide us Guiding question: What is the writer’s purpose for raising these questions The two questions show that the writer is worried about language dying and cultural differences disappearing. The writer asks these questions to attract readers’ attention and encourage them to think about the issue themselves. Rhetorical questions
III. Mini-project
Refer to your own experience and conduct an interview on the topic “How has globalization changed our lives ”
Explain the change(s) in the following one or two aspects and give your opinion on such change(s).
food local language festivals clothing entertainment
technology transport housing
Globalization has brought change to food. My opinion on such change
In the past Today
We ate lots of traditional food, such as xiaolongbao and spring rolls. Food from all over the world is available in the supermarket and online. The city is filled with bakeries, cafes and international fast food chains. I personally welcome this change. Because globalization has made it easier for consumers to enjoy a rich variety of meal options. By having a taste of the traditional food in other countries, we can also get to know their cultures and customs without going abroad. In short, globalization not only enriches our diets but also promotes cultural exchange.
Globalization has brought change to transport . My opinion on such change
In the past Today
In the 1970s, city dwellers in China mainly travelled by bicycle or by bus, though owning a bicycle was still considered a luxury by many Chinese people. Cars have become a popular means of transport in China. It is reported that every 100 Chinese households own 37.1 cars in 2020. In addition to driving a car, people can also choose to take the underground or ride a bicycle. Globalization has greatly promoted economic development in China and global competition has also helped bring down prices of many goods. Therefore, more and more ordinary Chinese families can afford private cars. Besides, globalization has also strengthened international exchange and cooperation in the field of science and technology. Developing countries, including China, are able to benefit from current technology with fewer barriers. The construction of underground railways and high-speed railways has made it easier and safer for us to travel. In short, I believe the change brought by globalization has helped make our lives better.

This figure nearly doubled in the following year.
Food packaging usually consists of single-use plastics including containers, tableware and plastic bags. As is known, marine plastic pollution poses a major threat to coastal ecosystem. Scientists worry if the packaging waste continues to grow at the current rate, many marine species will become extinct in the future. For example, on October 1st, Chinese National Day, the simplified and traditional version of the character 国 will be introduced. Beside the character will be a QR code. By scanning it, people can hear the stories behind the characters in the language of both Chinese and English. Since it’s a big project, it may take us about half a year to select the characters and complete the design. We can finish most of the work on our own computers, but probably we have to turn to a factory for production. We will sell it online and where foreigners gather. We do believe it will sell well, because it isn’t only useful but also likely to attract those interested in Chinese culture.

Give a presentation to your class. The topic : English as a global language
Your presentation should include:
some facts of the use of English
a brief introduction of the development of English
some effects English will have on people’s lives
(students’ answers for reference)
English is considered as a global language today. About 1.5 billion people around the world presently speak English. English is so helpful that English translations are almost everywhere to be seen. In addition, English is an official language in over 50 different countries.
Historically, English developed from different types of Germanic languages when Anglo-Saxons arrived in England in the 5th century. Also, English was influenced by many other languages, such as French and Latin. It spread rapidly to the whole world between the 11th and the 20th century because of worldwide migration and international exchange.
There is no doubt that English as a global language is here to stay. However, going global can sometimes be disappointing. It may become a threat of some particular languages and cultures.
It is generally assumed that there is a great need for a global language, but it also provides us with a lot of food for thought.
III. Interaction
Nowadays, many young people don’t speak the dialect of their hometown. For example, many students in Shanghai don’t know how to speak Shanghai dialect. Therefore, many people are afraid of the loss of Shanghai dialect. What can we do to protect the diversity of dialects
- from the perspective of governments
- from the perspective of schools
- from the perspective of students
(students’ answers for reference)
From the perspective of government: It is very necessary make policies to protect local dialects. For example, a large number translations can be used in the public places such as in TV programs and on buses.
From the perspective of schools: Some certain school time, such as in some extracurricular activities, should be dedicated to using the local dialect. Some lectures can be delivered to raise students’ awareness of protecting the dialect.
From the perspective of students: In order to protect the local dialect, we should be exposed to it as much as possible. When we are having a family get-together, it’s better to speak the local dialect to have a better communication with family members, especially with the old.

From your perspective, ____________________________________________.
(student’s answer for reference)
From my perspective, some students in Wales are required to learn Welsh because people who live there are afraid of losing their own language and they want to protect their language as well as their culture. So, perhaps the best way to preserve Welsh is to ask students even small children to learn the language.
Group discussion.
Share your opinions on the statement of ‘Putonghua should be used more than local dialects.’ You should support your opinions with proper reasons.
(student’s answer for reference)
I agree that ‘Putonghua should be used more than local dialects.’ Putonghua is the only official language in China. It enables people from different provinces to understand and communicate with each other more easily. If people don’t speak such a common language, it will be difficult for them to find a job in big cities. So, Putonghua should be used more than local dialects for information exchange nationwide.
I don’t think that ‘Putonghua should be used more than local dialects.’ Local dialects carry and preserve local cultures. Maintaining high standards of Putonghua may pose a threat to some local dialects and cultures. People should be encouraged to use dialects more than Putonghua in their daily life, such as in TV and radio programs. Otherwise, some local dialects may disappear.
IV. Interaction
If you lived in Wales, would you speak English or Welsh…or both Why
(student’s answer for reference)
If I lived in Wales, I would speak both English and Welsh. Here are my reasons.
On one hand, English as a global language is so widely used all over the world that I can’t neglect it. English will help me to communicate and make friends with people from other countries.
On the other hand, I think I have no choice but to learn Welsh, especially in some schools like Glantaf School, where students are required to learn Welsh. And a lot of local people there speak Welsh, so it is easy to communicate with them if I speak Welsh. Furthermore, I know there are many unique, small languages that risk becoming extinct in the years to come. Therefore, if I lived in Wales, I would be afraid of losing Welsh. Language is a kind of personal identity, so it is very important to remember who we are and where we come from. If we younger generation couldn’t carry on speaking Welsh, it would disappear in the future.
So, if I lived in Wales, I would choose to speak both English and Welsh for the purpose of communicating with people around the world as well as preserving the language of my own.
