Comprehension
Read the summary below and fill in each blank with a suitable word based on the language of the passage. You may change the form if necessary.
The passage from The Old Man and the Sea is an exciting story about how an old man 1__defeated___ a shark. At the beginning of the passage, the old man was trying to bring back home his huge fish—his first after 84 days of catching 2 ____nothing___. 3__Attracted____ by the fish’s blood, a huge shark appeared and began to 4____attack/hit______ the big fish tied to the side of the little boat. The old man took his spear and 5_____drove/threw____it deep into the shark’s head. After that hit, the shark struggled hard to get away, 6_____wrapping__ itself in the rope on the spear, and then jumped out of water with over three 7______quarters___ of its body over the white waves. It was finally killed, sinking into the sea with the old man’s spear and the broken rope. The old man was very tired after the 8______fight___ and became a little worried about the journey ahead: he had lost his only spear, and the fish was 9_____bleeding_____ again. He was certain that there would be more sharks to come. However, he was trying to tell himself that a man could be 10___destroyed___ but never be defeated. With this in mind, he was ready to face more challenges.
Read the passage again. Study sentences(1)-(4). They are simple in language but rich in meaning. Give your interpretations with the help of the guiding questions.
(1) The old man knew that he was dead but the shark would not accept it.
Guiding question: What does “it” refer to Why does Hemingway use “would” when he talks about the shark
“It” refers to the fact that he was going to die. “Would” is used as a modal verb to express willingness or preference. It shows that the shark has a strong desire for survival. The shark is not willing to give in to death.
(2) … my fish bleeds again and there will be others.
Guiding question: What is the relationship between “my fish bleeds again” and “there will be others”
The relationship between“my fish bleeds again” and “there will be others” is cause and effect.
(3) But man is not made for defeat.
Guiding questions: What does it say about the old man’ s attitude towards life What does it say about humanity in general
In the face of danger, the old man shows great courage. For instance, at the beginning of the excerpt, the writer mentioned that “I cannot keep him from hitting me , he thought, but maybe I can get him”. Instead of being scared, the old man thinks that there might be a chance for him to seize the right moment and kill the shark, although his boat will inevitably get hit by the shark.
Besides, the old man is also a man of determination and willpower. For example, in the excerpt, “when he threw the fishing spear into the shark's head at a place where the line between his eyes crossed with the line that ran straight back from his nose. There were no such lines”. When the old man aimed his spear, he imagined two lines crossing between the shark's eyes. The fact that he aimed well and hit the shark with precision shows his great determination and willpower.
When it comes to humanity in general, we can infer from the sentence that we should never give up in the face of challenges and always have a solid faith in ourselves.
(4) But I was more intelligent than he was. Perhaps not, he thought. Perhaps I was only better armed.
Guiding questions: What did the old man mean by “perhaps not” Do you agree that he won only because he was better armed
The sentence implies the old man felt he had a narrow escape, possibly not because of his intelligence but because of his spear and ropes. He was not sure whether he could survive any other upcoming danger without his spear and ropes.
But I bet he was going to survive because he had what it took to overcome difficulties, such as his strong will and determination.
Interaction
Please find more sentences with rich meanings in the passage and share your interpretations of them with others.

Reference answers:
①I am going to talk about an assignment in school which challenged me. It was quite daunting, as it involved public speaking. Every time when I had to talk in front of other people, I easily got choked. I was rather worried so I turned to my uncle for help who regularly gave speeches in public. He told me that the key to a good speech was mastery over the subject matter. I spent one whole month memorizing the content and had my friends come over and help me prepare. When finally the day of the presentation arrived, I not only gave the whole presentation but also received a good grade. That is the day when I realized that instead of getting cold feet in front of challenges, we should overcome them.
②I lived abroad for two years when I was a kid. At first, communication became a huge issue. As a eight years old kid, who barely knew how to speak English, I tried to fit in, but it was literally impossible for me to understand my fellow classmates. I was frustrated and scared but I knew I just had to try agian and try harder the next time. So I borrowed many English books from the library and began to imitate others’ accents. With continuous efforts, I was able to speak fluent English finally. This precious experience has paved the path of English learning for me, and I am quite grateful for my perseverance.
