Grammar: Countable and uncountable nouns
Analysis of the teaching material
The teaching material covers basic rules of countable and uncountable nouns, including how to use singular countable noun with articles correctly, how to form the plural of countable nouns and how to measure uncountable nouns by adding nouns before them to show their amounts.
Teaching Aims
After the lesson, students are expected
1) to expand a range of vocabulary about different foods.
2) to master the expressions about amounts, such as a piece of, a glass of, a packet of, four kilos of and so on.
3) to be able to recognize and tell countable nouns from uncountable nouns.
4) to be able to grasp the plural forms of some countable nouns as well as how to use quantifiers in front of uncountable nouns.
Anticipated problem
Students may have difficulty remembering all the grammatical rules at a time and easily mix up some tricky words.

3min Ask students whether they have difficulty naming food in a correct form and then bring in the topic of the lesson: Countable and uncountable nouns; Explain the definitions of countable and uncountable nouns. Offer a general overview of what is going to be taught to students. Teacherwhole class
3min Introduce how to use countable singular nouns; Lead students to practice using articles before singular countable nouns through blank-filling. Strengthen students’ basic knowledge and measure to what degree students master the concept Teacherwhole class Individual work
15min Present the basic rules to form the plural of most countable nouns; Guide students to understand and master extra rules to form the plural of countable nouns by listing exceptions. Nouns ending in a consonant+y: -y+ies Nouns ending in a vowel+y: +s Nouns ending in s, sh, ch or x: +es Nouns ending in o: +s or +es Nouns ending in f or fe: -f/fe+ves Some other special nouns, such as man, tooth, child, sheep etc. Further improve students’ knowledge of grammar rules by offering examples and tips. 10min Explain and summarize what kind of nouns are uncountable; Review some typical uncountable nouns that students have learnt but easy to mix up; Show students pictures and get them to notice quantifiers which can be put in front of uncountable nouns; Ask students to finish the exercise on the book; Flash some words on the slide and ask students to read and tell whether they are countable or not. 4min Guide students to complete a recipe on how to make a coconut cake: Classify the ingredients according to countable and uncountable nouns; Have students finish the recipe through blank-filling. Through real practice, students can come to realize the importance of grammar. Group work
Assignment There is a shopping list for a class party. Sort a list of countable and uncountable nouns into two groups. Then add five more items to each list.
