第一节(共12小题,每小题3分,满分45分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A cowboy named Bud was looking after his herd in a mountain in Alberta when suddenly a BMW moved forward towards him. The driver, a young man in a suit, sunglasses and a tie, leaned (靠着) out of the window and asked the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves (小牛) you have in your herd, will you give me a calf ”
Bud looked at the man, then looked at his herd and calmly answered, “Sure, why not ”
The man parked his car, took out his computer and surfed a NASA (美国航空及太空总署) page, where he called up a GPS (全球定位系统) satellite to get an exact fix on his location. Within seconds, the young man received an email on his cellphone. Finally, he printed out a full-color, 150-page report on his hitech HP printer, turned to the cowboy and said, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”
“That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” said Bud. He watched the young man select one of the animals and looked on him with amusement as the young man put it into his car.
Then Bud said, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf ”
The young man thought for a second and said, “Okay, why not ”
“You’re a government official,” said Bud.
“Wow! That’s correct,” said the man, “but how did you guess that ”
“No guessing required,” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you wanted to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me; and you don’t know a thing about how working people make a living — or about cows. This is a herd of sheep ... now give me back my dog.”

Many people believe that paper started with the ancient Egyptians. However, this is not exactly true. Instead, 5,000 years ago, Egyptians used a material called papyrus, which was made from the stems (茎) of river plants. They put these flat pieces together to create a larger flat sheet (薄片), on which Ancient Egyptians wrote like paper.
But the paper we know today did not exist until 3,000 years later. It was created in China. No one knows who first invented paper. But history does tell us about one man who improved the process. It was in the year 105. A man named Cai Lun began to use many materials to make paper. He took the outer covering of a tree, pieces of net and cloth, broke these materials down into very small pieces and mixed them with water. Then he pressed out the water, and all that was left was a thin sheet of paper.
Paper quickly spread to other areas of the world. In the Middle East, people made paper thicker and also made it easier to produce quickly. From the Middle East, paper travelled to Europe and then the Americas. For many years paper cost a lot of money and time to create. But in the 19th century, people began to create paper from wood.
Paper changed the way people lived. Long ago, when paper was difficult to make, people only used paper for special purposes. Government officials would write important laws on it. Explorers drew maps of the world on it. But common people did not use it. As paper became easier to make, it was used for more things. People wrapped (包裹) it around gifts. Paper was also used as money. Today people use paper for even more things.
4. According to the text, papyrus _____.
A. was made from cloth
B. has a longer history than paper
C. is difficult to produce
D. was introduced to Egypt from China
5. Paragraph 2 is mainly about _____.
A. how Cai Lun improved paper
B. the long history of paper in China
C. why Cai Lun wanted to make paper
D. the invention of the first piece of paper
6. What’s the spreading route of paper
A. Asia → the Americas → Europe → the Middle East
B. Asia → Europe → the Middle East → the Americas
C. Asia → the Middle East → Europe → the Americas
D. Asia → the Middle East → the Americas → Europe
7. When it was first invented, paper _____.
A. could only be used by government officials
B. was expensive and difficult to make
C. was sent to others as a gift
D. was too thick to write on
C
Nothing like the Nobel Prize Award existed during the time of William Shakespeare. The first Nobel Prizes were not awarded until 1901, nearly 300 years after the death of the so-called “Bard of Avon”.
2014 marks the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth. His plays are still widely performed all over the world. But for many people, Shakespeare is something they study in school, not something they read or watch for pleasure.
One American theater company is trying to change that. Ross Williams studied acting and directing in school. He set up a theater company called the New York Shakespeare Exchange. Ross Williams loves Shakespeare. But he knows that many people might not share that love. He says 400-year-old English is difficult to understand. And, he says, many people think of Shakespeare as dusty and dull (枯燥的).
“So I started thinking about how I could get people to experience Shakespeare in their day-to-day lives without having to go see a full show. And so we started with the sonnets because they’re concise (言简意赅的).”
Sonnets are 14-line poems. Ross Williams and his partners founded the Sonnet Project as part of their theater company. The group hopes to film each of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets before the great English writer’s birthday in April. Each piece is being filmed in a different location in New York City.
To complete the project, the company requires the talents of many artists. Ross Williams put out a call to filmmakers on the Sonnet Project’s website. Twenty-five-year-old Noemi Charlotte was one of many who answered the call. He directed sonnet 71 a few months ago. He likes the idea of presenting Shakespeare in short films.
“Fantastic! Doing it in different places in New York brings Shakespeare into the twenty-first century.”
8. Shakespeare is not popular today mainly because _____.
A. the language he used in his plays is out of date
B. people are tired of learning about him in school
C. it takes too much time to see a full show of his plays
D. his sonnets can’t be easily understood by many people
9. Ross Williams started his company in order to _____.
A. get more experience in acting and directing
B. introduce Shakespeare’s sonnets into modern plays
C. encourage the development of the theater industry in America
D. let people today enjoy Shakespeare’s works more conveniently
10. What do we know about the Sonnet Project
A. It aims to turn all of Shakespeare’s plays into films.
B. It translates Shakespeare’s poems into modern English.
C. It performs Shakespeare’s plays in various parts of New York.
D. It presents all of Shakespeare’s sonnets in the form of short films.
11. What is Noemi Charlotte’s attitude towards the Sonnet Project
A. Curious. B. Favorable. C. Uninterested. D. Disappointed.
D
Sooner or later, most students are to take some form of English examinations. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better test taking skills. These abilities really have nothing to do with understanding English better. They are skills that make taking the test easier, and therefore provide better results.
Here are some very important—and often ignored—guidelines to taking a test successfully.
Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. Remember one question may only be worth one point! You will become nervous when you fail to find out its answer, making you lose your concentration and leading to worse results. However, answering the questions you are sure you know results in your being more relaxed and feeling more confident.
Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things.
Usually(but not always) a strong first impulse(冲动) means we know the answer and we don’t really have to think about it too much. Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes a mistake. This is very common, so be very careful!
If you don’t know the answer, write something. If you are answering a 4 possibility multiple choice question you will still have a 25% chance of being correct!
Taking a test is as much for you as is for your teacher, so never cheat. If you cheat, you don’t help yourself in the long run.
12. In the first paragraph, the writer stresses the importance of ______.
A. better preparations for exams.
B. better understanding of English.
C. better skills at taking exams.
D. better results of taking exams.
13. When taking an exam, you are advised ______.
A. to first answer the questions which are easier to you.
B. to depend on your first impulse to answer the questions.
C. to search the test paper for all the answers to the questions.
D. to give up the questions whose answers you don’t know.
14. It is common that many students______.
A. pay much attention to their testing skills.
B. often give up a difficult test halfway.
C. often get higher results by cheating.
D. don’t believe in their first impulse.
15. What would be the best title of the passage
A. Effective Studying Methods.
B. Effective Test Taking Skills.
C. Getting Better Exam Results.
D. Being Successful Students.
