An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again and the elephant waved it away once more.
This happened several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy Why can’t you just stay in one place ”
The fly answered, “I am interested in whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses, and everything that happens around me, pull me here and there and I cannot resist (抵抗) them. What is your secret How can you stay so calm and still ”
The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule me. I am in control of myself — my senses do not tell me what to do. This helps me stay focused on whatever I do, and so, keep my mind calm and still. Now that I am eating, I am completely enjoying eating. In this way, I can just focus on enjoying my food. ”
After hearing these words, the fly’s eyes opened wide and a smile appeared on his face. He looked at the elephant and said, “I understand! I will always be restless if I let my senses control me. On the other hand, if I try to use some self-control, my mind will become calm and I’ll be able to stay still. ”
It is said that the mind is restless and pays attention to whatever is in front of it. But if you can control what you pay attention to, you can control your mind.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot, looking like a helicopter, is called the detector (探测器) bot. At about 4 metres long, it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air, and deliver goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake.
This robot is equipped with a high 360 degree panoramic (全景的) camera. It can work day and night and also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr Qi Juntong, from Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, "The most important feature of this robot is that it doesn't need distant control. We just set the information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 metres, and as fast as 100 kilometres per hour."
This robot has a different function — it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers can't go.
The robot is equipped with a camera that can work in the dark, as well as a detector that not only finds people, but can also detect poisonous gas.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10 metre long pipe. People trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will be produced, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.
8. We can learn from the passage that the earthquake rescue robot ________.
A. is unable to deliver goods B. is designed to predict the earthquake
C. can send pictures even at night D. can be used to clear away poisonous gas

People eat more when they are glued to the television and the more entertaining the program is, the more they eat, according to a new research.
It seems that distracted(分心的)brains do not notice what the mouth is doing, said Dr. Alan Hirsch, neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago.
Hirsch explored the impact of smell, taste and eating behaviors while watching TV by measuring potato chip consumption. Forty-five volunteers ate as many chips as they wanted every six minutes while they watched monologues by late-night talk show hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno. They were still given chips to eat when the television was off. Hirsch found people ate an average of 44 percent more chips while watching Letterman and 42 percent more while viewing Leno, than when they did not watch TV.
If you concentrate on how the food tastes, you'll eat less because you'll feel full faster, "Hirsch said in an interview at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Toronto. So if that's the case, let's look at the opposite. What if you're distracted If you're distracted, in theory, then you'd eat more."
Through his research at the foundation, Hirsch has helped people overcome the loss of sense of smell and sense of taste. which typically results in weight gain because the brain does not know when it should stop eating.
The ventromedial nucleus(腹内侧核)in the hypothalamus( 下 丘脑), where the so-called satiety(饱腹感)center is located. tells the body whether it is hungry or full. It is inhibited or tricked, the result can be changes in eating patterns, he said.
People who cook spaghetti all day don't feel like eating spaghetti at the end of the day, "said Hirsch," By being exposed to a smell all day long it's tricking the hypothalamus."
Volunteers were asked to concentrate on the sensory characteristics of the food such as taste and smell. Researchers say these sensory clues, in addition to inner body changes. mark satiety.
But when distracted. a person does not pay attention to either the body's sensations of feeling full, or to the sensory characteristics of the food.
Many studies have linked being fat to watching television and that link is likely due to inactivity, Hirsch said. But perhaps entertaining shows are also contributing.
"If you want to lose weight, turn off the television or watch something boring," he said.
12. When Hirsch conducted the research, he______
A. evaluated the degree of the volunteers' loss of taste.
B. measured the amount of the chips the volunteers ate.
C. analyzed the volunteers' preference on TV programs.
D. counted the minutes the volunteers spent on TV programs.
13. According to the research, when will you feel full faster .
A. When we are distracted.
B. When we focus on how the food tastes.
C. When we are watching entertaining programs.
D. When the brain doesn't know when it should stop eating.
14. Why does the author mention "People who cooks paghetti all day don't feel like eating it at the end of the day"
A. It tells us that eating spaghetti is inhabited.
B. It indicates that spaghetti doesn't taste good at the end of the day.
C. It tells us that people who cook spaghetti don' like eating spaghetti.
D. It shows that smell is "telling" the hypothalamus that the body is full.
15. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To prove that being fat is linked to inactivity.
B. To reveal the relationship between TV programs and eating behaviors.
C. to explain why watching television makes people eat more and gain weight.
D. To find how sensory characteristics of the food affects people's feelings of eating.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. C
【解析】

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“If you concentrate on how the food tastes, you'll eat less because you'll feel full faster(如果你把注意力集中在食物的味道上,你会吃得更少,因为你会更快地感到吃饱。)”可知,当我们把注意集中在食物的味道上时,我们会更容易感到吃饱。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。结合第六段“The ventromedial nucleus(腹内侧核)in the hypothalamus(下丘脑), where the so-called satiety(饱腹感)center is located, tells the body whether it is hungry or full.(下丘脑腹内侧核,也就是所谓的饱腹中枢所在的位置,会告诉身体它是饿了还是饱了。)”和第七段“People who cook spaghetti all day don't feel like eating spaghetti at the end of the day, "said Hirsch," By being exposed to a smell all day long it's tricking the hypothalamus.”(赫希说:“那些整天做意大利面的人在一天结束后就不想再吃意大利面了,整天暴露在一种气味中会欺骗下丘脑。”)”可知,整天做意大利面的人在一天结束后就不想再吃意大利面,是因为气味“告诉”下丘脑,身体已经吃饱了。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“People eat more when they are glued to the television, and the more entertaining the program is, the more they eat, according to a new research.(一项最新研究表明,人们在全神贯注看电视时吃得更多,而且节目越有趣,吃得越多。)”和下文内容可知,文章主要解释看电视会让人吃得更多,体重增加及其产生的原因。故选C项。

Many people connect gratitude with saying “thank you” to someone who helped us, making it a short act of appreciation. According to Robert Emmons, a leading researcher, gratitude is an emotion that can result in long-lasting positivity. ___16___
Gratitude is good for your health.
Through his research, Emmons found that grateful people reported feeling healthier and happier, both mentally and physically. ___17___ In the workplace, employees who are shown that they are appreciated are healthier and more productive by 50 percent.

Working in an ever-developing, fast-paced society, we are surrounded by ambitious people who are always struggling for more and better. ___19___ It starts by paying attention to what’s now going on in your life, and that’s true self-awareness is the key to being successful.
Gratitude helps us build strong relationship.
Gratitude is a powerful tool for strengthening relationship, both at work and in your personal life. People who express their gratitude tend to be more willing to forgive others and therefore able to create long-lasting connections.

【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了心怀感恩的益处,从而呼吁人们要学会感恩。
【16题详解】
根据上文“According to Robert Emmons, a leading researcher, gratitude is an emotion that can result in long-lasting positivity.”(根据著名研究人员罗伯特·埃蒙斯的说法,感恩是一种能够产生持久积极情绪的情感。)可知,感恩会带来长期的积极效应;根据后文的三个小标题“Gratitude is good for your health.”(感恩对你的健康有好处。),“Gratitude makes us more self-aware.”(感恩使我们更加自觉。),及“Gratitude helps us build strong relationship.”(感恩有助于我们建立牢固的关系。)可知,后文主要在论述感恩的益处,所以G选项“以下是感恩带来的一些益处。”总领下文,符合题意。故选G项。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Through his research, Emmons found that grateful people reported feeling healthier and happier, both mentally and physically.”(通过他的研究,埃蒙斯发现,心存感激的人在精神和身体上都感觉更健康、更快乐。)可知,心怀感恩的人在生理和心理上都更加健康和快乐;根据下文“In the workplace, employees who are shown that they are appreciated are healthier and more productive by 50 percent.”(在工作场所,那些表现出被赏识的员工更健康,工作效率也提高了50%。) 故选A项。

Thinking about other’s opinion, experiences and backgrounds will make you a better person.”(那些认识到生活中美好事物的人,无论多么简单,都更有可能对他人的需求保持敏感,并尽可能地提供帮助。

Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They taught their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog, Spot, how to take good care of themselves—learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza—with money left on the table—if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge.
On the very morning when the parents left Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
Too excited to fall asleep again, Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck(伸) her head into Daniel’s room,“Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.” Daniel said excitedly, “I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will.”
They ran with the dog in the yard and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly, “We haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves, right ”After a while, he added, “We should save money, too.” Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the pet clinic immediately with Jane as their parents had done.

【答案】When Dad and Mom arrived a day earlier, they were amazed to find everything in a mess. Mom was angry and shouted, “Listen to me, young man—I left you in charge. We thought you would act like an adult, but look at the mess. The money for food has been used up but why does Spot still look hungry What did you do with the money we left ” Jane explained anxiously, “Mummy, Spot is sick, so we spent the rest of the money taking it to the pet clinic.”
Daniel ran into his room, with tears in his eyes,“Jane, there is no need to explain and Mom won’t trust me any longer.” Comforting Mom, Dad said calmly, “There is probably a good explanation for everything.” Hearing the little daughter’s words, Mom understood that the reason why they had no time to clean the house was that they waited for Spot at the clinic all day. Mom regretted acting so angrily and was satisfied that Daniel learnt to be responsible for others. She apologized to Daniel sincerely and hugged him in her arms, saying that “you are really growing up into a young man.”

9. According to Dr Qi Juntong, the earthquake rescue robot ________.

C. is equipped with more advanced cameras
D. can work by itself once given the information
10. The robot can find people in an earthquake with the help of ________.

People eat more when they are glued to the television, and the more entertaining the program is, the more they eat, according to a new research.
It seems that distracted(分心)brains do not notice what the mouth is doing, said Dr.

On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
