I had just delivered a memorized speech, and 1 was about to learn how the judges decided my performance. The
audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room. I felt the drum rolled in my heart.
The third-place winner was announced. The name was not mine. Then the second-place winner, still not me. At last,
the moment of truth came. 1 was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months’ preparation. My
heart felt closer to the latter.
Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However,it was an indescribable feeling
to drive a 200-mile round trip get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of
four competitors in my group. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he said, "I felt like the 12-year-old
boy who kicked his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh." Oh yeah, I could relate.
l had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech
Contest. After not placing in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many
failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give up on a second
contest! I reworked my speech for the following year, but again I did not place.
I couldn't accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on, until l thought about my hero.
Never mind the lost prize money and praise --- through learning stories about Lincoln. I discovered that I can fail
successfully.

C
Me: Hello Dad! I've an exam today.
He: All the best son! I'm getting a strong feeling. You'll rock it today. May god bless you! Me: Thank you dad. Bye!
And I hang up the call.
My friend standing beside me chuckles, "Do you do this before every exam "” I answer, "Yes, I feel good and
encouraged, and so do they. "It hardly takes a minute to call up your parents, but it gives a lot of confidence and
makes their day too.
Not calling up parents is indeed a common mistake college student make. For me the most common mistake is
treating it like school. When 1 went to university, most of the people around me came straight from school. They
had the thought like children who were being forced to do something. They skipped classes, sat at the back talking
during lectures and even didn't do the reading! They were still in“school" mode, thinking that the point was to get
through it with the least effort.
For my part, I was there after working in a beer factory for three years. 1 knew that I had gone to university
because I wanted to learn. I wasn't there because my teachers at school made me go, or my parents made me go, or
because my friends were all going. I had chosen to go. I 7think that this put me in a different mind. I read all the set
texts and I went to all the lecture sand seminars. Don't get me wrong. I had fun too, but I was there to learn and I
learnt a lot. I enjoyed it and it was rewarding to learn about the authors, their works, the critic's opinions etc.
The kids around me thought that reading six novels for a module and going to a lecture foreach novel was too
much work. They would read one novel, go to the lecture for that one and write their essay on that one book. They
thought that they were really clever to work out an easier way of doing it. But they were tricking themselves out of
an education!
There are other mistakes that may cause future regrets for the college students. A large number of them focus too
hard on getting good grades, showing no interest in out-of-class side projects. Some complain that they are too busy
because of school. As a matter of fact, they do not seriously treat all the free resources that universities have to
offer.

Asthma(哮喘) and allergy (过敏) attacks have increased in the United States, despite the fact that our outdoor air
quality has improved. Some researchers think these problems have increased because kids are spending too much
time indoors.
When outdoors, we are exposed to different kinds of pollen(花粉 ) and dust. But when indoors, we are also
exposed to allergens(过敏源). Allergens cause allergies and most people know that allergens can make you sneeze,
have runny eyes, and other cold-like symptoms(症状 ). But allergens can also lead to asthma attacks, which are
more serious. Asthma symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, especially during exercise and tightness in
the chest. Allergic asthma affects about three million children(8 to 12 percent of all children) and seven million
adults in the United States each year!
You can get rid of the allergens from your environment! Most children with asthma are allergic to something, so
staying away from the allergen should help control the asthma. If you have asthma or allergies, stay away from
animals, remove the teddy bears, rugs and curtains in rooms that you spend a lot of time in. Removal of dusty
things can help you breathe more easily. If it's trees and pollen that affect you, air conditioning and air filters(空气
过滤器) should help.
And research helps, too! Children whose parents, brothers or sisters have asthma are more likely to develop it
themselves. But even though our genes do play some part in whether or not well have asthma, researchers hope to
make the most progress in fighting the disease by looking at the environmental aspect (方面) of asthma. The hope
is that if kids are exposed to fewer allergens early in . life, they'll be: less likely to develop allergic responses.
Asthma research is performed at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and at the
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases(NIAID).

D. His desire to show himself on the stage.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Learn to fail successfully
B. Never mind others' judgments
C. Lincoln-my hero
D. Losing-an indescribable feeling
As a matter of fact, they do not seriously treat all the free resources that universities have to
offer.
28.The writer begins the passage with a dialogue in order to_
A. show off his writing skills
B. expect his friend to admire him
C. lead in the topic naturally
show he likes making phone calls
29.Why did the writer want to go to college
A. Because his parents forced him to.
B. Because he learned from his friend.
C. Because his teachers asked him to.
D. Because he was dying for knowledge.
30. What do the underlined sentences in Paragraph 5 mean
A. They lost their learning chances without noticing it.
B. They made up excuses for their laziness in learning.
C. They often pretended to be working hard at everything.
D. They told lies about what they were doing in college.
31.According to the passage, college students are supposed to________.
A. stop being hard on themselves academically.
B. make the most of the university they go to.
C. have some relaxation after taking classes.
D. feel thankful for what they are doing now
D
32. What makes asthma and allergy attacks increase in the United States
A Poor outdoor air quality.
B. Not enough outdoor time.
C. Too much pollen and dust.
D. The decrease of people's physical condition.
33. what can we know in the second paragraph
A. Allergens in home environment can affect our health.
B. The number of allergens in the average home has decreased.
C. Asthma symptoms are the same as those of the common cold.
D. Allergens from outdoors are more dangerous than those in our homes.
34.What do we know from the passage
A. Allergies are more serious than asthma.
B. People do not get asthma when they are outdoors.
C. we should stay away from allergens to help control asthma.
D. Children whose parents have asthma are certain to develop it.
35.Where can you most probably find this passage
A. In a storybook.
B. In a news report.
C. In a travel guide.
D. In a health magazine.
