“Anything you want, anytime you need it.”
The message appeared on computer screens across the country at the same time, on the same day: December 12th, at 12 p.m.. Simultaneously, important looking envelopes containing cards with the same message were hand-delivered to the offices of all the major news companies.
One found its way to the desk of Chris Lin, a business reporter at The Post. The card was beautifully designed – a black background with the words printed out in crisp white letters. There was no explanation on the back, just a website address.Chris went to the website. Its style was identical to the card’s and said: “Anytime: Starting Tomorrow.”
The next day websites and blogs were filled with articles theorising about Anytime. Was it a shopping website like Tao Bao or Amazon A joke Something illegal Anytime’s marketing had worked – it was a household name before it’d even made a single sale.
When the opening came, that day at noon, the Anytime website suddenly had a single field that read, “What do you want ” All you had to do was type the words into that box, and then specify how quickly you wanted your item delivered: within one, ten, or twenty-four hours.
Bloggers were the first to test the service. And their reviews were glowing. Within weeks, Anytime had become a part of daily life. Nobody used other delivery sites or the post anymore as Anytime was much cheaper and faster.
Chris still wondered what exactly Anytime was. He tried to find out who owned the company, but it was registered in a small country that did not require such information to be made public. He did find some interesting facts, though. Anyone who challenged the company, it seemed, met with serious trouble. A government official critical of Anytime for avoiding tax was forced to leave his position after news stories suddenly appeared claiming he was dishonest. The head of another company taking Anytime to court died in a car accident just days before the case was to begin.
Chris began making a list of all the people who had something terrible happen to them after opposing or criticising Anytime. By lunch, he had more than one hundred examples. Something was definitely wrong. Chris worked on his list the rest of the day, emailing people who could provide more information and looking through newspaper records. After working through the night, an exhausted Chris finally fell asleep at his desk at 4 a.m..
When he woke a few hours later, there was a message flashing on his computer screen: “Stop making trouble.” Chris smiled. He had no intention of stopping now that he knew he was on the right track.

A. An invitation to a company opening.
B. The website address of a new company.
C. The words “Anytime: Starting tomorrow”.
D. The words “Anything you want, anytime you need it”.
5. Why did the company choose to send the cards to many news reporters
A. Because it didn’t have enough money for traditional advertising.
B. Because it wanted to attract the reporters as customers.
C. So the reporters would write stories about the new company.
D. So people would find the new company interesting.
6. What did Chris’ s research suggest about Anytime
A. It may be very dangerous.
B. Its popularity would soon decrease.
C. It was doing business all over the world.
D. It was being widely criticised by journalists.
7. How did Chris feel at the end of the story

Sometimes people call each other “scared-cat”. But have you ever thought about this expression When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood stream. Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told someone you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut It isn’t always clever to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illnesses can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside, don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and put them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are that you’d see little fruit flies flying all over them. They are bad.
You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.
8. When people and animals are aroused by anger or fear, ______.
A. they feel very regretful immediately B. their muscles get neither tense nor relaxed
C. their hearts beat either faster or slower D. they may get ready to attack or run away
9. Why do human beings get into trouble according to the passage
A. They are usually not as alert as animals.
B. They sometimes can’t control their feelings.
C. They always do something wrong to other people.
D. They don’t pay attention to their physical changes.
10. Which of the following words are similar in meaning to the underlined word
A. In frustration. B. In anger. C. On guard. D. Under attack.
11. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To tell us that people’s feelings are like bananas in a cupboard.
B. To give us some advice on how to express our feelings.
C. To help us deal with feelings in a wise and proper way.
D. To prove that it isn’t always wise to express our feelings freely.
D 9. B 10. C 11. C

根据第一段 “When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood stream. Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.( 当猫受到惊吓时,它的心脏开始加速跳动,肌肉变得紧张。如果危险持续下去,这种动物会做以下两件事之一。它会保护自己,或者以最快的速度逃跑。)”和第二段中的“Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.( 类似的事情也会发生在人身上。当我们因其他感觉而兴奋、生气或害怕时,我们的身体会经历许多生理变化。我们的心跳加快,肌肉变得紧张。所有这些变化都让我们更加警觉,随时准备做出反应。我们也要做好自卫或逃跑的准备。)”可知,人和动物相似,在愤怒或者害怕的时候,都会准备好自卫或者逃跑。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later(如果我们屈服于我们的情绪,让它们控制我们,我们就会陷入麻烦。你有没有生气时说过什么话,或者打了人之后又后悔过 )”可知,当我们无法控制自己的情绪,而是让我们的情绪控制我们的时候,我们就会陷入麻烦。故选B。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.(我们的心跳加快,肌肉变得紧张。所有这些变化都让我们更加alert,随时准备做出反应。)”可知,当人们心跳加快,肌肉变得紧张的时候,人们随时准备做出反应,说明人们此时非常“警觉”,随时准备反击或者逃跑。由此推知,画线词意思为“警觉的”。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It isn’t always clever to express your feelings freely.( 自由地表达你的感情并不总是明智的。)”,第四段中的“all feelings need to be expressed.(所有的感情都需要表达)”和最后一段“You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them(你可以试着把情绪当成碗柜里的香蕉。你可以把它们藏起来,假装它们不存在,但它们仍然存在。最后,你将不得不与它们打交道)”可知,作者建议人们不要随意的表达自己的情绪,但是,该表达的时候还是需要表达的,隐藏它们是不合适的。因此,作者写这篇文章的目的是建议人们用一种明智合适的方式表达自己的情绪。故选C。
D
New research shows how kids’ brains reorganize as they learn math.
All the time you spent memorizing multiplication tables(乘法表)may have made you a better mathematician, according to a new study. A team of scientists from Stanford University, in California, have shown how the brain reorganizes itself as kids learn math.
After a certain amount of time spent practicing math, kids can put away the calculator(计算器). They don’t even need to count on their fingers. They simply know the answers to subtraction(减法), addition, and multiplication facts. The quicker kids can recall basic math facts, the easier it is for them to solve more complicated math problems.
The Stanford University researchers observed the brain activity of 28 students aged 7to 9 for the study. They took scans of the students’ brains as the students solved math calculations without the help of a calculator, pen or paper. A calculation—three plus four equals seven, for example—flashed on a screen. The students pushed a button to say if the answer was right or wrong. The scientists also recorded the response speed, and what parts of the brain became active as the kids pushed the button.
These observations showed a process called fact retrieval(事实检索). Rather than using their fingers to count, or writing out answers on a piece of paper, the students pulled the answers from memory. It’s as if the answers to basic math problems are kept in a long-term storage area in the brain, which was built from repetition. “Experience really does matter,” said Dr. Kathy Mann Koepeke.
Children make the shift(转换)from counting to fact retrieval when they are 8 to 9 years old, the study shows. This is the time when most students are learning basic addition and subtraction. When kids have basic math facts memorized, the brain has more free space to learn more complicated math.
This process has benefits for the future. The study shows as kids grow older, their answers rely more on memory and become quicker and more accurate. Less brain activity is devoted to counting. Some children make this shift quicker than others.
12. What did the researchers do when students worked out the given problems
A. They recorded the students’ brain activities.
B. They pushed a button linked to the students.
C. They noticed whether they used a calculator.
D. They found out who responded most quickly.
13. Fact retrieval is a process when the students________.
A. calculate answers using pens
B. use their fingers to count out
C. repeat the answers they remember
D. find the answers from their memory
14. What plays a key role in solving a math problem
A. Intelligence B. Experience
C. Learning method D. Constant practice
15. What happens to kids when they are 8 to 9 years old
A. Their brains are more active than before.
B. They depend on fact retrieval for answers.
C. They become more interested in learning math.
D. They work out complicated problems more quickly.
A 13. D 14. B 15. B

leave an impression on sb.
前一句“A nice appearance shows that you value yourself.”(漂亮的外表表明你重视你自己)和本句“it doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money______clothes for a nice appearance.”(这并不意味着你不得不花很多钱买衣服为了看起来好看)是转折关系,且空处位于句首,与主句逗号隔开,做状语,注意单词位于句首首字母大写,故填However/Nevertheless。
Spend money on sth.
根据句意和than(比)可知,空处用形容词比较级,important(重要的)比较级是more important,故填more important。
故填which。
分析句子结构可知,and连接两个并列句,即“So _________(think) about what the majority of people will be wearing in the situation ”和“wear something that suits and makes______(you) feel comfortable.”,所以前一个句子是祈使句,应用动词原形,故填think。

My sister and I boarded a small plane together with 40 other passengers. Unluckily, while flying over the mountains, the plane met with violent airflow. Losing control suddenly, it hit an unknown mountain top. The crash killed a few passengers immediately, leaving many injured including my sister. In order to add a slight chance of being found, we waited in the open, as opposed to waiting in the plane, even though it was freezing cold. At night, we slept side by side to keep ourselves warm. We melted snow into water to drink. We knew our food could not last us long, sticking to the hope that we would be rescued soon.
We knew from the radio that the outside world was trying to look for the missing aircraft. However, the aircraft was white and blended (混合) in with the snow, making it impossible to be seen for helicopters from the sky. Later, our hope was dead when we found out through our radio that the rescue effort ended. Most of us were very depressed though it was no use.
Now climbing over the mountains, ourselves to search for help seemed to be our only chance of survival. Although the crash site was an awful place, with urine (尿) everywhere and smelling of death, I still wished to stay there. But my sister would give in to her injuries soon if we were not rescued. Thus, together with two other people, Canossa and Vaginitis decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. Carrying some food and water, we started our journey.
The mountain we were to challenge was one with slopes so steep (陡峭) that it would scare away a team of expert climbers.

Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain.

Paragraph 1
The mountain we were to challenge was one with slopes so steep (陡峭) that it would scare away a team of expert climbers. We met with various difficulties including cold weather and dangerous mountain roads. Besides, food and water became less and less. Hungry and tired, what’s worse, two of us were injured on the way, which made our climbing more difficult and last longer time. We endured exhaustion and starvation but at last we reached the top of the mountain. To our horror, we found nothing.
Paragraph 2
Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain. Again we started making our way down the mountain. Eventually, at the base of the mountain we were helped by a local farmer who called the police for help. After the rescue team arrived, I then guided them via a helicopter to the crash site. Through the efforts of all the people, we were rescued. Finally, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who had gone through the mess and odds and had endured the cruel days.

Within weeks Anytime had become a part of daily life.
4. What was on the front of the card sent to Chris Lin
A. Scared that he would get into trouble.
B. Confident that he would find the truth.
C. Nervous about what the company would do.
D. Satisfied that he had discovered the company’s secret.
C
9 Why do human beings get into trouble according to the passage
