Would you like to read books in your free time Here are four books you really should read.
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
It works perfectly as a book for teens. Set at an unspecified date in Earth’s future, the novel presents two conflicts between humankind and the Formics, an alien species they call the “buggers”. In preparation for the third conflict, children, including the novel’s leading character, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, are trained from a very young age.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
McCarthy is one of our greatest living prose (散文) stylists. His novel, The Road, which was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and in which a father and young son struggle to survive, is made all the more impressive by its briefness.
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
For decades, almost every good book about disaffected adolescents was compared to The Catcher in the Rye, but none has matched the original. Salinger had his finger on the pulse of a generation in a way that few writers can match, and he broke with tradition by writing in a colloquial (口语的) voice.
Tell Me a Riddle by Tillie Olsen
You might not have heard of Olsen, but her 1961 story collection Tell Me a Riddle was one of the first to chronicle (按事件顺序记载) the lives of working-class women. Olsen opened a window onto a world not often seen before in American literature and influenced a generation of women writers, including Margaret Atwood, Sandra Cisneros, and Alice Walker.
1. What kind of book is Ender’s Game
A. A love story. B. A story collection.
C. A folk tale. D. A science fiction.
2. Which of the following won its author the Pulitzer Prize
A. The Road. B. Ender’s Game.

One day, a few years ago, I was rushing from the pool when a man stopped me and said, “You must come to swim with the team.” I was in my early 50s--- too old for a swim team, I thought. But the coach--- Igor was his name---insisted: “I can see you are a good swimmer.”
Encouraged, I joined his group of swimmers. Workouts started at 5:30 in the morning when most people were still in bed. Although we were all at different swimming levels, we had one thing in common: We wanted to get better.
After a few days, a bunch of us were complaining about how little progress we were making, how slow we were. Igor smiled and said, “You are all confused! Speed is not the goal; it is the result of perfectly beautiful technique.” What really mattered to Igor was the technique. Once you mastered that, he argued, speed would follow naturally. Speed was simply the welcome side effect of swimming well.
I’ve been thinking lately that there’s a lesson here that goes beyond the pool. We all wanted to swim faster and the more hysterically (歇斯底里般地)we tried, the more speed escaped us. The same goes for happiness. Everyone wants to be happy, yet the more directly we go after happiness, the more elusive (难以捕捉的)it becomes.
Research shows that thinking too much about how to be happy actually weakens well-being. This is in part because all that thinking consumes a fair amount of time, and is not itself enjoyable. Study after study shows that good social relationships are the strongest, most consistent predictor of a happy life.
Our technique has improved, thanks to Igor. Some days, 1 swim only a little faster than I did before. But even if 1 don’t, I feel great.
In the end, happiness is a side effect of living well—-just like speed can be the result of excellent swimming technique. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the pool.
4. How did the author react when Igor invited him to join the team
A. He hesitated at first. B. He refused firmly.
C. He accepted it at once. D. He consulted his coach.
5 Why did some teammates feel unhappy after a few days
A. They learned nothing new. B. They were unable to swim faster.
C. They got up too early in the morning. D. They were at different swimming levels.
6. What happens when the author focuses on swimming
A. He becomes the best on the team. B. His social relationships have improved.
C. He makes progress and enjoys himself D. His swimming speed has increased greatly.
7. What can we know about happiness
A. Happiness comes to (hose trying hard to achieve it.
B. Happiness is a side effect of a personal hobby.
C. Happiness is a natural result of living well.
D. Happiness arises from a healthy body.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. C

Many countries are currently facing major problems related to waste collection, particularly in urban areas, due to the large amount of waste produced daily by the population. Technology could play a significant role in dealing with these issues, for example, through the development of more effective tools to gather and collect garbage.
With this in mind, researchers at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College have recently created a cheap and effective system, which they refer to as AGDC, for automatic garbage detection and collection. Their system uses AI algorithms (计算程序) to detect and locate waste in its surroundings, then picks it up with a robotic arm.
The system consists of a robotic body (i.e. a base, a robotic arm and a drawer) and several machine learning algorithms. It uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detect garbage on the ground. Then, it calculates its position by analyzing pictures collected by an integrated camera (内置摄像头). Next, another algorithm judges the distance between the robot and the garbage, while also giving instructions to the robot to reach the target location. The position of the garbage and these instructions are then fed to a microcontroller, which controls the robot to move to where the garbage is resting. When the robot finally reaches the garbage detected by CNNs, it uses a robotic arm to collect it and drops it into a drawer that is attached to its body.
The researchers have already developed a prototype (原型) of their waste detection system, which can currently collect up to 100-200g of garbage. In their future work, they plan to expand on this prototype, so that it can collect two to three kilograms of garbage before emptying its drawer. In addition, the team is thinking of developing and training a new CNN model that would allow AGDC to detect various kinds of garbage at the same time.
8. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Using technology to collect waste.
B. Making using of urban areas effectively.
C. Dealing with industrial pollution.
D. Reducing the amount of waste produced.
9. What is the microcontroller used to do
A. Pick the garbage up. B. Detect and locate the garbage.
C. Empty the robot’s drawer. D. Direct the robot’s movements.
10. How does Paragraph 3 mainly develop
A. By process. B. By classification.
C. By comparison. D. By example.
11. What will the researchers do next
A. Build a prototype of AGDC.
B. Advertise the prototype of AGDC.
C. Improve the prototype of AGDC.
D. Mass-produce the prototype of AGDC.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes their hearts and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases the risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers said the study was the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin(毁坏) us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regular from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
12. What does the underlined part “that train has left the station”mean in Paragraph 2
A. The train has changed its course.
B. Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.
C. The Internet brings great changes to people’s life.
D. The Internet has improved people’s life.
13. What can we know about the study according to Paragraph 4
A. There was no similar study like it before.
B. Most of the young people had high blood pressure.
C. Adult people aged above 17 took part in the study.
D. Over half of the teens in the study were heavy Internet users.
14. Which of the following would Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow probably agree with
A. That teenagers shouldn’t use the Internet.
B. That the Internet will ruin human life in the future.
C. That smartphones are more harmful than computers.
D. That regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet.
15. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. Every coin has two sides—so does the Internet.
C. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D. How to prevent teenagers from using the Internet.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Would you like to read books in your free time Here are four books you really should read.

5. Why did some teammates feel unhappy after a few days
B Making using of urban areas effectively.
