Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my family’s last vacation. It was my six -year old son’s winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a week long trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day.I had meetings in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn’t mean my husband and my son couldn’t stay. I took my nine- month old and took off for home.
The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged — okay, ordered — them to wait it out at the airport, to “earn” more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600.Not bad, huh
Now some people may think I’m a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.
I’ve made a living looking for the best deals and exposing(揭露)the worst tricks. I have been the consumer reporter of NBC’s Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.
I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn’t hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it’s the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.
4. Why did Delta give the author’s family credits
A. They took a later flight.
B. They had early bookings.
C. Their flight had been delayed.
D. Their flight had been cancelled.
5. What can we learn about the author
A. She rarely misses a good deal.
B. She seldom makes a compromise.
C. She is very strict with her children.
D. She is interested in cheap products.
6. What does the author do
A. She’s a teacher.
B. She’s a housewife.
C. She’s a media person.
D. She’s a businesswoman.
7. What does the author want to tell us
A. How to expose bad tricks.
B. How to reserve airline seats.
C. How to spend money wisely.
D. How to make a business deal.
A 5. A 6. C 7. C

Many people think that listening is a passive(被动的) business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.
Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as “bracketing”. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.
Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often, we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.
It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic. In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy, before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.
8. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A. preparing a topic list first B. focusing on one’s own mind
C. directing the talk to the desired results D. experiencing the speaker’s inside world
9. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2
A. How to listen well. B. What to listen to.
C. Benefits of listening. D. Problems in listening
10. According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.
A. listen actively B. listen on purpose
C. set aside their prejudices D. open up their inner mind
11. What type of writing the article likely to be
A. Science fiction B. A news report. C. A medical report. D. Popular science
D 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据画线词上文“Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside.”以及后文“Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person.”
根据第二段“Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.(好的倾听也需要完全的专注于别人。 故选A。
根据第三段中“Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively.(即使我们觉得在我们的商业交易或社会关系中我们在倾听,我们通常所做的是有选择地倾听)”可知,根据作者的观点,在交流中,人们倾向于有目的地倾听。
D
London’s newest skyscraper (摩天大楼)is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.
The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶) He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆)of the ships that were once on the river Thames.
The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices.
Before building work began, a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.
Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor.
The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.
12. London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of ._____
A. its cost
B. its size
C. its shape
D. its height
13. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to _____
A. change London’s skyline
B. inherit London’s tradition
C. imitate the Egyptian style
D. attract potential visitors
14. The critics who refer to social division think the Shard_______ .
A. is only preferred by the rich
B. is intended for wealthy people
C. is far away from the poor area
D. is popular only with Londoners
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. The Shard: Cheers and Claps
B. The Shard: Work of a Great Architect
C. The Shard: New Symbol of London
D. The Shard: A Change for the Better
【答案】12 C 13. B 14. B 15. D

And that is how the building got the name: the Shard.

根据文章第五段“Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. …So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor.”
However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better

Long time no see! I miss you very much. How’s your life in senior secondary school At the beginning of the new semester, I realized that entering a senior school from junior school is really a big challenge for me.As a freshman, my new school life is a little challenging and stressful.
Firstly, I have difficulty with several subjects, especially maths and physics.I felt sort of anxious because this school differs in many ways from my previous one, but I am trying my best to adapt to it.Moreover, I haven’t made any new friends with the same interests so far so I felt extremely lonely and helpless from time to time. What’s more, what is also very different is that I have to live on campus from now on, which I’m still not used to.
All in all, though I’m worried about keeping up with the excellent students, I will do my best to study harder.I hope to have a happier, more fruitful and satisfying life in my new school.
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
