I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before. I have gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they’re also around in high schools. I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

When I was 14, two years before I was old enough to get a driver's license, I saw an advertisement for a 1969 Honda CL90 motorbike. My mother was strict, and I knew if I asked, she would say no. I just had to do it. I sold my 10 speed bike, added that to the money I had made doing yard work, and bought the Honda for $100 in Seaside, California, near where I grew up.
I kept the motorbike hidden from my parents. If the bike broke, I had to know how to fix it on my own. That 90cc Honda engine was as simple as an engine could be, and I learned what goes on inside it.
I was always tall for my age, so even at 14, the motorbike was small for me. I was like a trained circus( 马戏团) bear on it. The motorbike only went 38 miles per hour, but I found that, if I changed the front sprocket(链轮), I could get it to 46.
I would throw my leg over that thing and just ride, and I also learned how the world went around. That motorbike brought everything for me.
The motorbike is important for another reason. Long before Honda cars appeared in the U.S., Honda motorbikes were everywhere. These motorbikes introduced the Honda brand ( 品牌) to America. I have talked to so many people who said the Honda CL90 was the first motorbike they owned.
Years later, I have a collection of classic (经典的) motorbikes and cars, and a job I love that is related to lots of classic motorbikes and cars. A little motorbike was the push behind all of that.
24. The author got his first Honda after .
A. he had saved $100 B. he got his driver's license
C. his parents sold his old bike D. his mother agreed to buy one for him
25. What does the author think of his first Honda
A. It was very quick. B. It was too expensive.
C. It was very easy for him to ride. D. It was hard to repair on his own.
26. What is so special about the Honda CL90
A. Its size is perfect for a 14 year old.
B. It was the first motorbike Honda made.
C. Its engine is simpler than other motorbikes' engines.
D. It was the first motorbike that many Americans owned.
C
Binge-watching (追剧) your favorite TV series is bad for your brain. Dr. Randall Wright, based in Texas, said the need to watch episode (集) after episode has a similar influence on the brain to gambling (赌博). What’s more, it often leads to social loneliness, snacking on junk food and a shortage of exercise and sleep, which, over time, is bad for the brain.
When you let auto play start the next episode, you can find out what happens next and your brain receives good feedback, Dr. Wright wrote in an article. This right-away satisfaction is similar to gambling where even after a win, you are not satisfied and want to continue playing. With binge-watching, you are not satisfied with stopping after episode five and want to continue watching. This cycle coupled with the snacking and the long time sitting can lead to unhealthy changes in your brain and body over time.
Dr. Wright said, “Binge-watching itself is not bad. It becomes problematic when you are watching a third, fourth or fifth episode instead of doing healthy activities.” But he said it is possible to avoid the bad influence of binge-watching with four tips, including staying away from salty, fatty, calorific foods, exercising before a binge-watching, setting an alarm for sleep and balancing TV viewing with socializing.
If you add these tips to your binge-watching practice, you can create lasting healthy habits and still enjoy the now-and-then binge-watching time without hurting your brain.
27 What might “it” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Gambling. B. Binge-watching.
C. TV series. D. Brain.
28. In what way is binge-watching like gambling
A. The long time sitting. B. The changes of feeling.
C. The snacking on junk food. D. The immediate satisfaction.
29 What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The tips on how to develop a healthy lifestyle.
B. The reasons why binge-watching is problematic.
C. The ways to keep away from binge-watching.
D. Do’s and don’ts of binge-watching.
30. What may be the best title of the passage
A. Ill Health: The Result of Addiction
B. Healthy Habits: A Must of A Better Life
C. Binge-watching: A Killer of Your Brain
D. TV-Viewing: Gradual Harm on Your Health

30. What may be the best title of the passage

【答案】Dear Linda,
I’m sorry to learn that you are having such a bad time. Actually, most people will feel homesick and anxious when they leave home and come to a new place, especially a foreign country. So don’t worry too much.
Here are some tips for you. First, you’d better try to change some of your habits so that you can get used to the new environment as soon as possible. Second, make more new friends, who can share their hobbies and ideas with you. You will feel less homesick with many friends around you. Third, you should take part in some social activities. It will help you learn more about the local customs and cultures.
I hope my advice will be useful.
Yours,
Li Hua
