Helen Keller was an American author and educator who was blind and deaf. Her education and training represent an extraordinary accomplishment in the education of persons with these disabilities.

Helen Keller died on June 1, 1968, in Easton, Connecticut, at the age of 87.
4. What was Helen Keller’s relationship with Anne Sullivan
Think and discuss
Anne Sullivan became governess to six-year-old Helen Keller in March 1887. In 1888 the two began spending periods at the Perkins Institution, and Sullivan subsequently accompanied Keller to the Wright-Humason School in New York City, the Cambridge School for Young Ladies, and Radcliffe College. Sullivan was Keller’s constant companion at home and on lecture tours until Sullivan’s death in 1936.
5. Why is Helen Keller important

Helen Keller was an author, activist, and educator whose lifetime of public advocacy(号召) for many communities and causes(事业) had lasting global impact. Keller, who became blind and deaf as a result of a childhood illness, learned to communicate with hearing people and eventually speaking audibly(有声地). She helped to change perceptions(看法) of the deaf community and the blind community.
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.

Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song.

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and companionship have made my life worth living. I do not know what it is to see into the heart of a friend through that “window of the soul”. I can only “see” through my fingertips the outline of a face. I can detect laughter, sorrow, and many other obvious emotions. I know my friends from the feel of their faces.
