A hunter, who crawled (爬) for days through thick wilderness in search of help, is recovering in hospital. Alone, John Sain spent almost four days in remote wilderness, with little food and water.
The experienced hunter said after following a deer deep into the woods Thursday morning, something he couldn’t have expected happened. “I stepped up on a log. There were two long logs and my foot was trapped in between them. I went forward and it hit the bottom bone of my right leg, which was broken into halves.”
Sain had no cell service and was miles from the trail, but after writing emotional goodbye letters to his wife and two children, he made a decision. He used sticks and cloth to make a stick for his injured right leg. Then, he began to crawl towards the trail. “For two and a half days I dragged myself out of there,” said Sain. He had a survival kit with him, a little food and a water purifier. Each night, he would light a fire for warmth. But by Sunday, his fourth day alone, he started to break down.
That afternoon, two men on motorcycles happened to come across him on the trail. One of them called for help. Afterwards, McCall Fire and Rescue was sent out to find Sain. Over the phone, a McCall firefighter told people to clear the way for Life Flight to land in the wilderness. Then, Sain was sent to hospital for treatment.
Despite everything that happened, Sain says he will go out hunting alone again, but next time with a satellite phone or GPS locator. He says his story should be a reminder to others to be very prepared when heading out into the wilderness. Be sure to tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to arrive home. Always carry a survival kit in case something goes wrong.

Several weeks ago, I pulled an old road map out of the glove box and passed it to my children. They had never seen the province of Ontario laid out like that before. They stared at the map, asking about all the towns, parks, and other landmarks we’d visited, and I pointed them out on the map.
Google Maps and GPS are modern wonders that have gotten me out of many confusing places, but paper maps still have a role to play in our lives. Most of us adults learned to read them out of necessity, but it’s up to us to pass on that skill to children whose need may not be so obvious, but who still will benefit from it.
As Trevor Muir wrote in an article on this topic, “When kids learn how to create and use paper maps, they are doing more than just learning how to get around. They are actually developing fundamental skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Map skills still belong in today’s classroom.”
As a child I had National Geographic maps taped to my bedroom walls. This aroused my curiosity and imagination about those places and thus made me eager to remember my geography and history lessons because they were tied to places I’d “seen”. Even now as a mother of four, I’ve also spared time to travel to many of the countries whose maps I studied as a child.
Additionally, in this fast-changing world, unexpected events can rapidly influence one’s usual way of life. When GPS satellites or Internet connections are affected, this old-fashioned skill can get you out of a mess without requiring a smartphone. Last but not least, paper maps arouse “big picture” thinking, showing kids that there’s a much bigger world out there and helping to direct them within it.
So, now is a good time to pull out those dusty old maps and lay them on the kitchen table.
28. How did the children react when they were given the paper map
A. They showed great curiosity.
B. They seemed totally confused.
C. They considered it old-fashioned.
D. They found it less convenient than GPS.
29. Trevor Muir thinks teaching kids paper map skills is .
A.entertaining B. time-consuming C. impractical D. beneficial
30. Which of the following shows the author’s opinion
A. Internet connections are always reliable.
B. GPS will sooner or later replace paper maps.
C. Paper maps provide kids with a grand vision.
D. Paper maps make people connected with each other.
31. What would be the best title for the text
A. Time to Teach Kids to Read Paper Maps
B. How to Teach Kids Survival Skills in the Wild
C. Time to Encourage Kids to Step into a Real World
D. How to Teach Kids about Different Kinds of Maps

A research project called Mineral has created robots that move around in farm fields. The project aims to use computers to help farmers grow more food in ways that are healthy for the environment.
With the number of people on earth getting bigger each year, more food needs to be grown in order to feed everyone. Some experts say that to feed everyone, more food will need to be grown over the next 50 years than in the last 10,000 years. In the past, farmers tried to quickly increase the amount they produce, using methods that were not always healthy for the environment — more fields, fertilizers, and pesticides (杀虫剂).
Instead, the focus of the Mineral project is on getting farms to produce more by improving conditions for each plant. Elliot Grant, who leads the project, says the goal is to “manage the plant instead of the plot.” Mineral’s team spent several years talking to farmers to see what problems they were having and how these problems might be fixed. That led to the creation of special robots, called “plant buggies”.
At first, the buggies were very simple. They were built on bicycles and took pictures with cell phones. Over time, they’ve been improved repeatedly. The plant buggies roll on four wheels and are high enough to glide (滑行) over rows of plants without hurting them. They’re covered in solar panels and have strong wheels, allowing them to roll through muddy fields. The robots can take detailed pictures of plants, track each plant’s location, and measure the plant’s size.
Before, farmers had information about the soil and the weather, but they couldn’t track every plant. Now, with Mineral’s robots, they can. By collecting lots of information like this, Mineral believes computers can help farmers make predictions about how their plants will grow. Studying each individual plant could end up saving time and money. For example, if robots can spot which plants have diseases, farmers can quickly get rid of these plants before they ruin the entire crop, allowing farmers to only fertilize and water the plants that truly need it.
32. What mainly contributes to the need for more food
A. The increasing population. B. The constant disasters.
C. The worsening soil condition. D. The development of industry.
33. What does the underlined part “the plot” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The series of events. B. A secret plan.
C. The mark on a map. D. A piece of farmland.
34. Which aspect of plant buggies is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. Their classification. B. Their structure.
C. Their low cost. D. Their size.
35. What is special about plant buggies
A. They can collect soil information.
B. They can make weather predictions.
C. They can monitor each plant’s condition.
D. They can help fertilize and water the crops.

Last Sunday morning, Michael had hardly got up when he received a phone call from his aunt.
“Hi, Michael, are you available today ” asked his aunt over the phone.
Michael knew why she was calling. His uncle was on a business trip abroad. His aunt had to look after her 5-year-old daughter Alice on her own. He thought she must need some help.
“Yes, I don’t have any plans for today,” Michael responded.
“That’s great! Could you come over today I need to visit a friend at the hospital today. I don’t want to take Alice there. Could you help take care of her today ” said his aunt.
“Of course I can. I’ll come over soon,” said Michael.
Michael loves spending time with little kids and he is good with them, so he often helps others look after their kids. However, his aunt hadn’t asked him for a favor before. It was the first time that he had been asked to take care of Alice.
When Michael got there, his aunt was already ready to go out. Before she left home, she told him to keep a close eye on Alice.
“Just don’t let her do anything dangerous,” she said.
After his aunt left, Michael and Alice were staying in the big house. Of course, it was boring. Then Michael spotted a little red bike in the room.
“Alice, do you know how to ride a bike ” Michael asked.
Alice shook her head, saying, “No. My mom doesn’t teach me to ride it. She is worried that I might get hurt.”
Michael didn’t agree with it. He learned to ride a bike when he was just three years old. Now he finally understood why his aunt asked him to keep a close eye on Alice. It was obvious that his aunt was a typical helicopter mother, who kept watching everything her kid did.
Michael, as a high school student, of course knew that children who were brought up by helicopter mothers could end up having many problems.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then Michael had an idea. When Michael’s aunt returned, she saw Alice riding a bike in the yard.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Jim,
Spring has come and our school is going to organize a cycling activity themed “Greet Spring, Embrace Nature” on April 10th. I am writing to invite you to join us.
Here is some information about the activity. At 8:00 am, we will gather at the school gate and then go to the famous cycling park in the suburb. After arriving there, we will rent road bikes and begin our cycling along the 10-kilometer-long route. After that, we will have a picnic. It’s a good chance to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful view in the countryside. And don’t forget to wear your helmet and protective gloves if you come.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Then Michael had an idea. He turned to Alice and asked, “Do you want to learn how to ride a bike ”Alice nodded immediately. Obviously, she couldn’t have much fun being closely watched by her mother. “I’ll teach you today,” said Michael. Alice jumped up and down when she heard that. So they went out with the bike. Since Michael had the experience of teaching children to ride a bike, he knew how to do that well. About two hours later, Alice could ride a bike on her own.
When Michael’s aunt returned, she saw Alice riding a bike in the yard. Of course, she was shocked. At first she was worried, fearing her daughter would fall down the bike. But seeing how well Alice was riding, she was no longer worried. The moment Alice saw her, she stopped and shouted excitedly, “Mom, I can ride a bike now.” Michael’s aunt had never taught her kid such things, so she said, “Thank you, Michael. I never let Alice do anything she really wanted to because I feared she’d get hurt. Now I should let her just go for it.”

(Text 9)
W: What are you reading
M: An article about this guy … Frane … Selak. They’ve called him the unluckiest man in the world. It looks like he’s had an unbelievable life.
W: Unbelievable How
M: Well … It started in the 1960s. He says he was on a train that came off the tracks and crashed into a river — he survived but the other 17 people died!
W: Lucky.
M: Frane did break his arm, though. Anyway, the next year he was flying on a small plane, which also crashed. Just as it was about to crash, one of the doors opened — the article says it had a fault — and he was sucked out. He escaped unhurt but nobody on the plane survived.
W: That’s unbelievable!
M: I know. Then a few years later, Frane was in a bus accident. There was heavy rain and the bus lost control on the wet road and crashed into a river. He survived, although 20 people drowned. Then Frane was in a car that caught fire while he was driving it on the motorway. He managed to get out with seconds to spare before the fuel tank exploded.
W: I don’t know whether he’s unlucky or extremely lucky, but I don’t think I ever want to travel with this guy.
(Text 10)
W: About two years ago I went with my class on our first school trip — five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn’t arrive until five o’clock and we didn’t leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired.
Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks with us, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls.
When we went shopping I tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn’t know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great — I bought lots of presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister!
I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos of my friends and the wonderful art galleries. I was sad to leave Paris. I had a lovely time there.
