4 Stonehenge was built slowly over a long period oftime. Most historians believe it must be almost 5,000 years old. One of the greatest mysteries is how it was built because the stones are so big and heavy. In 2001, a group of English volunteers tried to build another Stonehenge, but they couldn’t . “We don’t really know who built Stonehenge,” says Paul Stoker. “And perhaps we might never know, but we do know they must have been hard-working--and great planners!”

not only … but also …意为 “不但……而且……”,在运用时要遵循以下三个原则:
①并列原则: not only … but also …并列连词,连接两个并列成分,其中also可以省略。
②主谓一致原则: not only … but also …连接两个并列主语时,谓语动词在人称和数上要与but also 的主语保持一致。

【背景知识】
巨石阵(stonehenge)由巨大的石头组成,每块约重50吨。它的主轴线、通往石柱的古道和夏至日早晨初升的太阳,在同一条线上;另外,其中还有两块石头的连线指向冬至日落的方向。约建于公元前4000~2000年,是欧洲著名的史前时代文化神庙遗址,位于英格兰威尔特郡索尔兹伯里平原。2008年3月至4月,英国考古学家研究发现,巨石阵的准确建造年代距今已经有4300年,即建于公元前2300年左右。
