Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.
The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance.
In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money.
At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance.
The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.
Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for working around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.
Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.
Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.
1. What is special about children learning financial management by experience
A. They learn more quickly.
B. They are not likely to make mistakes.
C. Their mistakes won’t matter so much.
D. They have plans made by their parents.
2. When the writer says some young children “will learn the hard way that. . . ” in Para. 4, he means______.
A. they will know how hard it is to learn budget
B. they will have an easy time learning the lesson
C. what they will learn is absolutely true
D. their parents will teach them a hard lesson
3. Judging from the article, it is all right if a couple give their son an allowance______.
A. regularly twice every month
B. whenever he has run out of money
C. telling him to ask for permission before spending
D. without telling him what to spend on
4. The writer would agree to encourage the kids to ______to deal with a tight budget.
A. borrow money from others
B. ask their parents for more money
C. get paid for their household routines
D. earn money by extra work
B
When my best friend and I were teenagers, we two had favourite past time. Our favourite place to hang out was the Hallmark store. If we had the money, we would choose the perfect card for each other and then share tears or smiles depending on what emotion the words motivated. In those coming of years we developed a friendship built on sincere feelings and we often found comfort in the words of a Hallmark card. I think it is perhaps because of those years that I have become a greeting card collector.
The other day, while cleaning out the storage in our home, I came across the bag that I have kept greeting cards. They are the lasting messages that speak the meanings of my life. I pull out a foolish looking card. It has a stick figure on the front that seems to be drawn in my portrait. I giggled as I realized this was exactly how my oldest daughter saw her mum. Opening it up I saw a hand drawn heart with eyes and a big smile. On the other side are some words “You are the best mum in the world! ” This may be one card that Hallmark cannot compete with for it is a treasure more precious than gold. I can’t go back to where I’ve been but, from time to time, I can be taken into a welcomed memory trip.
These are the Hallmark moments of our lives. Words from once upon a time that inspire us to appreciate the people in our lives who mean so much. When we sometimes have doubts, or when the world deals us unfair blows, the encouraging words are there in black and white, sometimes drawn as in a homemade stick figure with a heart shaped smiley face standing out from the rest of the pile.
Life is a Hallmark card when you care enough to send the very best.
5. What influence does the Hallmark card have on the author
A. Finding her real hobby.
B. Becoming a greeting card collector.
C. Getting real friendship and comfort.
D. Sharing the experience of life with friends.
6. The author uses “a welcomed memory trip” in Paragraph 2 to show that______.
A. she often remembers her past
B. those cards are very precious for her
C. her daughter’s words move her deeply
D. drawing herself on the cards is very meaningful
7. Why does the author think the words on the cards mean a lot
A. Because they make her fill with gratitude.
B. Because they are written in different colors.
C. Because they can help her overcome doubts.
D. Because they always give her encouragement.
8. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. Words on the cards
B. Collect greeting cards
C. Life is a Hallmark Card
D. Memory in the childhood

The Buy Nothing Movement
Social media, magazines and shop windows bombard(猛轰)people daily with things to buy, and British consumers are buying more clothes than ever before. The average person spends more than £1, 000 on new clothes a year, which might not sound like much. 1 A lot of consumer spending is by means of credit cards. British people currently owe about £670 per adult to credit card companies. Also, people are spending money they haven’t earned to buy things they don’t need. Britain throws away 300, 000 tons of clothing a year, most of which goes into landfill(垃圾填埋地)sites.
2 But charity shops can’t sell all those unwanted clothes. A lot of clothes that charities can’t sell are sent abroad, causing even more economic and environmental problems.
3 The idea originated in Canada in the early 1990s and then moved to the US. On Buy Nothing Day people organise various types of protests and cut up their credit cards. Throughout the year, Buy Nothing groups organise the exchange and repair of items they already own.
The trend has now reached influencers on social media which now encourage their viewers not to buy anything at all for periods as long as a year. Two friends in Canada spent a year working towards buying only food. For the first three months they learned how to live without buying electrical goods, clothes or things for the house. For the next stage, they gave up services, for example, haircuts, eating out or buying petrol for their cars. 4
The changes they made meant two fewer cars on the roads, a reduction in plastic and paper packaging and a positive impact on the environment from all the energy saved. 5 But even if you can’t manage a full year without going shopping, you can participate in the anti-consumerist movement by refusing to buy things you don’t need.
A. In one year, they’d saved $55, 000.
B. If everyone followed a similar plan, the results would be impressive.
C. Online shopping means it is easy for customers to buy without thinking.
D. Second-hand clothes are often of too poor quality to recycle in charity shops.
E. But that figure hides two far more worrying trends for society and for the environment
F. However, a different trend arises in opposition to consumerism—the ‘buy nothing’ trend.
G. People might not realise the problems because they donate their unwanted clothes to charities.

Want to pick up that new best-seller for your flight, but not sure you want to spend the money
This will change your mind. If you’ve done a lot of traveling, you’ve probably noticed that the bookstores at airports all look pretty similar. They’ve all got familiar logos, the walls of inviting plane snacks, and, of course, the towers of new hardcover books. Chances are you’ve wanted to grab one of those books for the plane ride. However, those hardcover books are a little pricey. Is it worth it to splurge, just to relieve the midair boredom
Yes it is—because of a cool program that these bookstores have in place. These similar airport stores are all owned by the company Paradies Lagardère, and all of those stores take part in what’s called the “Read and Return” program. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Whenever you buy one of those books, you’ve got six months to finish it and bring it back to the same, or another, Paradies Lagardère location. When you do that, you get half your money for the original purchase back.
If you’re going on a trip, buy that book you’ve been dying to read. When you go back to the airport for the return trip, bring the book back with you and get half the money back. While you’re still in the bookstore, go ahead and get that other book you’ve been dying to read or the sequel to the book you read on the way there. Either way, your boredom on the flight back will be cured. And it gets better: the book you gave back will be re-sold for half price! Here’s what you can get for free at an airport.
There are two things you do need to make sure of. You have to bring back the receipt to get your money back. Also, the book needs to be in decent condition. But other than that, this program couldn’t be easier. In a way, it’s like a buy-one-get-one-half-off deal for books. Or get two books for the price of one-and-a-half. Either way, count us in.
1. What does the underlined word “splurge” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Spend the money. B. Take the effort.
C. Take the trouble. D. Spend the time.
2. How does the “Read and Return” program run
A. You can read books for free in any Paradies Lagardère store.
B. You can buy books for half price in airport bookstores.
C. You need to return the book to the same store where you buy it.
D. You can get half your money back if you return the book in time.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. It is difficult to take part in the program.
B. The receipt is necessary if you want to return the book.
C. The program is popular with readers.
D. The program runs successfully.
4. Why does the author write this passage
A. To encourage people to read on airplanes.
B. To introduce Paradies Lagardère company.
C. To advertise the “Read and Return” program.
D. To show the advantages of reading on airplanes.

2. 【解析】选G。根据下文“But charity shops can’t sell all those unwanted clothes. A lot of clothes that charities can’t sell are sent abroad, causing even more economic and environmental problems. ”可知, 慈善商店把那些不能售卖的服装运到国外, 这会引起更多的经济和环境问题。承接上文, 推出G项(因为人们把不需要的衣服都捐给慈善团体, 并没有意识到那些问题。)切题, 该选项中的the problems对应下文中的economic and environmental problems. 。故选G项。

【参考范文】
Dear John,
You are writing to tell me that you are going to open the online bank service for shopping online but I don’t think it’s a good idea.
There is no doubt that it is very convenient for us to have online shopping but the disadvantages of it far outweigh the advantages. First of all, shopping online is a waste of money because buyers tend to be persuaded into buying something they don’t really need. Second, some of the products sold online are probably fake ones due to lack of supervision. What’s worse, nowadays there are also many reports related to online shopping that personal information and even bank accounts are stolen.
Therefore, I suggest that you think twice and remain rational when you are shopping online.
Yours,
Li Hua
