Hello, my name is Zhang Shengxue. I’m very pleased to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. The lesson I am going to present is from Go for it Grade 8 unit 7 how do you make a banana milk shake. I will present my teaching plan from the following 4 aspects: the analysis of teaching material, the teaching methods and studying ways, teaching procedures and blackboard design.
Ⅰ. Analysis of teaching material
The analysis of the teaching material comes first. The topic of this unit is cooking at home. Students need to describe a process and follow instructions. Many students are interested in cooking especially girls, but they may practice less. Some ss know little about the process of cooking. This lesson is the first period of unit 7. It’s important for them to master the instructions. The part of section A has many words about food. Ss need to distinguish the countable nouns and uncountable nouns.
As for students, they have learned many vocabularies about food, fruit and drink in last semester. So they have a better basis to learn the new words of food. What’s more, they have known the usages of countable nouns and uncountable nouns in grade 7.They also have touched the usage of imperatives in Grade7 unit12. So the grammar will not very difficult for them. Though students will have high interests in leaning the process of cooking, it may be difficult for them to recognize western food which they never saw before.
Then, I will talk about some focal points we should pay attention to. Students need to master imperatives, countable nouns and uncountable nouns furthermore. They need to learn to master how many and how much questions. But they are not strange for students.
So in order to fulfill my learning tasks of this lesson, I make out the following 3 objectives:
The first is knowledge aims: ss can master the new words of cooking: blender, milk, shake, turn on, cut up, peel and pour. Ss can know the meaning of instant, relish, instructions. Ss can use how questions and imperatives to describe the process of cooking: how do you make a banana milk shake First, then, next, finally.
The second is ability aims: ss can describe the process of cooking by using some words. Ss can develop their listening skills and communicate in a correct and fluent way.
The third is emotional aims: ss can learn the way of cooking and develop their practical abilities. Ss can know the cultural difference between Chinese and western countries.
I will use instant noodle, PPT and BB in this lesson.
Ⅱ. The teaching methods and studying ways
Next,I will talk about the ways of teaching and studying. As we all know: the main instructional aims of learning English in the middle school is to cultivate Ss’s abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of English language. So first I will choose the Communicative Approach. In order to keep the ss talking in class, I’ll design situations to motivate ss through authentic material, thus the teacher-student and student-student interactions will focus on the meaning first, and to correct English study with their real life, at the same time, to develop their creative though in English.
Then, I will choose TBLT as teaching method. Ss should be independent learner and teacher should be a guide, an organizer, a leader and a team member sometimes. In this lesson, I’ll design some tasks students need to discuss. I will combine the language structures with the language functions; ss will receive western culture information while they are learning.
As for ss, they need to think about the cooking in their lives and convey the process in English. They need to observe and using the target language. Furthermore, they need to cooperate with their partner or group member to finish the tasks.
Ⅲ. Teaching procedure
Now, let’s focus on the teaching procedures. As we all know, “ well begun is half done.” A good beginning will not only warm the class up at once, but also give good preparation for presentation.
Step 1 led-in
The first is led-in. It will costs 5 minutes. I will ask some questions about what can they do and how do you do it to review the structure they have learned. Then, I will say I like dancing when I am not happy. While I am dancing I will teach them some words they need in the next step such as first, then, next, finally. Then I will let ss do the actions with me. In this step, ss will get interested in class and master focal structure previously.
Step 2 Presentation and practice
Here is the second step: presentation and practice. It will cost 20 minutes. This is the most important part. Firstly I will say I am hungry and I want to cook sth. Then I will take out instant noodles and ask them the names. After introduce the contents, I will let them discuss how do they make a instant noodle by using first, then, next and finally. I will give them some hints about the important verb phrases: pour water into, put sth into. Then I will let students show their results.
Secondly, I will let one student ask another about their favorite fruits and drinks by chain. I will tell them I like banana and milk. And my favourite drink is banana milk shake. Then I will let they guess what are in banana mik shake.
By that way, the ss are excited, at the same time, they have learned the names of drinks and instructions. With the hints they can talk about the process of cooking instant noodles successfully because nearly everyone can make instant noodles easily in real life. Introducing banana milk shake after instant noodle, ss can have a better understanding. It can arouse their interests and remember some key words. Then ss should be excited in guessing the contents of banana milk shake.
Step 4 listening and practice
In the fourth step, it will cost 10 minutes. I will ask student how to make banana milk shake. Then I will show them the listening material. They need to listen with my question: how many things are mentioned in the dialogue What are they After answering, they need to listen again to fill 1a. Then I will ask ss to put the instructions in the correct order in 1b.
After finishing it, I will let ss imitate the dialogue and act it out.
In this step, ss will exercise their listening skills to look for information. Ss also can master the key words and structures.
Step 5 group work
Here is the fifth step. It will cost 9 minutes. In this step, I will say that different people have different tastes, so they should respect other’s choice. Then I will give them a list of many fruits and drinks. They can choose what they want to make a new shake. They should work in groups to decide what they should choose. Then give me a report. By that way, ss can use what they learn in real life and consolidate the target language. It also can cultivate ss’ s imagination.
Step 6 homework
The last step is home work, it will cost 1 minute. In order to extend ss’ abilities of using English, it’s necessary to give ss good and proper homework. They need to write down the process of cooking ,food or drinks both are ok. They’d better make a easy drink for their parents and give a report tomorrow.
Ⅳ Blackboard design
Ok, this is my blackboard design. On the top is the title of this lesson. And I will write some key words on the left and the structures of the expression on the right. In my opinion, the BB design can reflect the teacher’s ability of mastering the text and leading the ss to master the text easily. I write the key words and structures there in order to tell the important part in class.
