If knowledge is power, then books are fuel and libraries are power stations! Here are four amazing libraries that can get you positively charged.
New York Public Library—New York
Opened in 1911, New York Public Library was the largest marble building in the world. Over the years the library has a collection of 53 million items, including rare first edition books, 300 million pages of historical newspapers and around 40 ,000 restaurant menus dating back to 1850!
Chetham's Library— Manchester
Founded in 1653, Chetham's Library is a free public library with the longest history in the UK. The building itself is even older —built in 1421, it's one of the most well—protected medieval buildings in England!
With 100 ,000 + books lining the shelves, the special atmosphere of the library attracts students and scholars alike to attend guided tours offered throughout the year.
The Library of Congress Washington, D.C.
Located on Capitol Hill, the Library of Congress is considered the national library of the US and the second largest library in the world. The library has around 168 million items, adding 10 ,000 to this number every day.
Need to catch up on the news The Library of Congress, which was founded in 1800, holds the world’s largest newspaper collection, with some dating back as far as 1659!
The British Library—London
The British Library was founded in 1973. With around 170 million items spread across 750 km of shelving, it's the largest library in the world. And this number is continually growing and 8 km of shelving has to be added every year! This is partly because the British Library must receive a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland, by law.

Jerilee Melo has been teaching preschool for four years. When COVID-19 shut down her school, she began to wonder what her next career move would be.
After several months, Melo decided to take a risk. She found a bus on Facebook Marketplace and purchased it in hopes of setting up her own teaching space.
Melo renovated (翻新) the bus and in August began teaching her first preschoolers, many of them her students in previous classrooms. To keep safe, Melo spread her class so that there were never more than five children on the bus with masks on.
Melo doesn’t move the bus during lessons, but parks it at a certain location and allows it to serve as a mobile classroom that utilizes the surroundings.
While her bus was renovated for teaching, Melo hadn’t been able to decorate it. In November she decided to enter a contest with Brittany Jeltema, a former teacher who now hosts giveaways for classroom makeovers (重新布置). Much to Melo’s surprise, Jeltema reached out telling her that she won.
“Jeri’s application stood out, because it was such an innovative approach to education,” Jeltema said. “ Jeri submitted pictures of her bus before the makeover, and my brain lit up with ideas. I knew I could help create an engaging environment for her students.”
Over the course of a weekend, Jeltema and her team flew to Valencia, California, and transformed Melo’s mobile classroom into a 70’s style bus.
With her bus, Melo hopes to inspire other teachers to get creative during these unprecedented times. “A lot of teachers are scared right now, because they feel they need to be in a classroom to educate. And they don’t,” Melo said. “I think teachers need to expand and go beyond the classroom, because what they have is valuable.”
4.Why did Melo buy a bus
A.To test a risky business. B.To build a market.
C.To continue her career. D.To expand her living space.
5.How did Melo protect students and herself from COVID-19
A.By reducing the class size. B.By reducing learning duration.
C.By driving the bus along. D.By teaching in remote surroundings.
6.How did Brittany Jeltema feel about Melo’s application
A.Scared. B.Curious. C.Surprised. D.Impressed.
7.According to Melo, in what way can teachers stop feeling scared
A.By following their dreams. B.By beautifying classrooms.
C.By concentrating on students. D.By thinking outside the box.

You can tell the man sitting next to you in the movie theater is a smoker, you can smell it on his clothes. But since he's not lighting up and smoking your way, it's OK, right Not at all. A new study out of Yale University says thirdhand smoke is also dangerous.
Thirdhand “smoke” isn't actually smoke at all. It's the tobacco contaminants (烟草污染物)that stick to walls, bedding, carpet and even a smoker's body and clothes.
Science has known about the environmental pollution caused by smoking for years, leading to the creation of smoking and non-smoking rooms at hotels, restaurants and the like. But thirdhand smoke has also been found in environments that were not known to be polluted by smokers, leading researchers to ask how that could happen.
To find out, Professor Gentner and his students set up an experiment in a movie theater that had not allowed smoking for more than 15 years. They supplied fresh air into the theater, making sure no smoking or other pollutants entered it. Special equipment measured the elements in the air before and after moviegoers arrived.
The team saw a sharp increase in levels of dangerous chemicals. As people came into the theater, the concentrations(浓度)went up, and then dropped over time. But they didn't completely disappear after the audience left. In many cases, the lasting pollution was noticeable the following day in the empty theater. Pollution happened where smoking had never occurred. Even more worrying: the harm of it could equal that of smoking 10 cigarettes by the end of the movie.
“If future research has the same findings on thirdhand smoke, it means that smokers could potentially still do harm even if the act of smoking took place in a different space.” said Narula, a doctor who was not involved in the research. “And the only way to be free from thirdhand smoke is to ban smoking everywhere.”
8.What do we know about thirdhand smoke
A.It is the main factor of environmental pollution.
B.It causes much less harm than smoking cigarettes.
C.It's the remains of harmful chemicals from smoking.
D.It does not occur in an environment without smokers.
9.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4
A.Introduce the procedure of the experiment. B.Add some background information.
C.Provide some research data for the readers. D.Make a summary of the previous paragraph.
10.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A.Concentrations. B.People. C.Levels. D.Dangerous chemicals.
11.What can we infer from what Narula said
A.Smokers should keep away from non-smokers.
B.The harm of thirdhand smoke remains to be proved.
C.Future research will hardly produce the same result.
D.There is no way to remove the harm of thirdhand smoke.
D
British sculptor Jason Taylor has made it his mission to use his talent to protect our ecosystems by creating underwater museums. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work — The Underwater Museum of Cannes.
“The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,” Taylor told Dezeen. “Ocean ecology has been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.”
The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.
Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine(崭新的) blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s seagrass. Just one square meter of the seagrass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The seagrass also helps prevent coastal erosion(腐蚀) and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.
“The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,” Taylor told Dezeen. “If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.”
12. What are the underwater museums intended to do
A. To make huge profits. B. To raise awareness of protecting the ocean.
C. To show Jason Taylor’s talent. D. To draw attention to endangered sea animals.
13. Why does the outer part of the sculptures look like a mask
A. To popularize the features of the locals. B. To remind people to protect themselves.
C. To reflect people’s protection of the ocean. D. To stress the sensitiveness of the ecosystem.
14. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the project was started. B. How the seagrass was restored.
C. What recovery effort the project made. D. Why the surroundings were improved.
15. What can we infer from what Jason Taylor said in the last paragraph
A. The situation of the ocean is easily ignored.
B. The destruction caused to the ocean is noticeable.
C. Forests play a more important role in ecosystems.
D. People have zero tolerance to damage done to nature.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horse. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper.” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “Ok!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pipe trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

第一节:
Last weekend, our class attended a voluntary activity in a community senior center nearby.
Some of us entertained the elderly by singing songs and doing magic tricks. Others chatted with them. They were overjoyed at our coming and the senior center was full of laughter. Besides, we also taught them how to use smartphones in everyday life, such as showing the health QR code, calling a taxi and making an appointment with the doctor. They were impressed by the convenience technology brings.
The activity is so meaningful that we all feel great and determined to visit them regularly.
第二节:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. This unexpected appearance frightened my horse, which made it run wildly. I tried my best to control it, but in vain. Frightened as I was, I tried to keep my balance to prevent myself from falling off. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath, and so did I. At that moment, my dad also came up. Seeing I was OK, he was quite relieved. But it was clear that we got lost.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. We didn’t know where the farm house was. What we could do was to go back along the previous track slowly. But it was really difficult for us in such a dark situation. Just as we were at the point of desperation, we heard a familiar voice from the distance. “It must be Uncle Paul,” I said. So we cried back with excitement. Finally, Uncle Paul safely brought us back home. What an unforgettable ride!
