三、阅读理解(30分)
A
When my family moved to America in 2012 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was
serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I al-
ways respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure.
My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long
talk about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description
“old”. I then walked back to the table and said sorry to the wife. After the couple
heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences,
so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can
learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here
many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or
jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in
the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t
respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
By Jack

Is it difficult for you to get up in the morning Hiroyuki’s bed will solve your problem! Here is how it works.
The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music. The tape recorder in Hiroyuki’s bed plays a recording of his girlfriend. She whispers in a sweet voice, “Wake up, darling, please.” A few minutes later, Hiroyuki hears a recording of his boss. His boss shouts, “Wake up at once, or you’ll be late!”
If you don’t get up after the second recording, a mechanical “foot” in the bed will kick you in the head. The bed waits a few minutes. What! You’re still in bed! Slowly the top of the bed rises higher and higher. The foot of the bed goes lower and lower. Finally you slide off the bed and onto the floor. You are out of the bed and awake!
Hiroyuki’s bed is not in stores. There is only one bed----the bed Hiroyuki made for a contest. Maybe someday a company will make Hiroyuki’s bed and sell it in stores. 六、阅读表达: 阅读下面的短文,按要求完成短文后的题目(10分)
In the past twenty years, riding bicycles has become more and more popular among people of all ages. 3 Bicycles have long played an important part in the lives of American young people. But today an even greater number of adults cycle along roadsides and bicycle paths(自行车专用道). These new riders are often trying to become fit or lose weight. They have found that bicycling is a pleasant way to stay healthy.
This is certainly good for health. But it has also brought some problems. With all these added people on the road, bicycle safety has become a matter of real importance.
Bicycle safety is mostly a matter of common sense. People should ride only on bicycle paths where they will not be badly hurt. There are also a number of rules that riders should follow, especially when riding on streets or highways. Bicyclists should never ride against the traffic, nor should they carry other people on their bicycles. They are also supposed to ride in single line on busy streets and to walk bicycles across the busy intersections (交叉路口) . 4 By following these rules, bicycle riders will not only stay healthy but also be safe.
In one recent year, the National Safety Council reported that 34 thousand bicycle riders were hurt in highway accidents. In that same year, another six hundred riders were killed. Since the introduction of crash helmets (头盔) in 1980, the number of injuries (伤者) and deaths from bicycling accidents had gone down. Today, more and more riders realize the dangers of bicycling. They are wearing helmets and paying closer attention to cycling rules.

During National Holiday, my family and I went to Mount Chang. Mount Chang is a famous place that has many beautiful views, such as temples, green grass and nice flowers. And the air in Mount Chang is quite clear.
It took us an hour to climb up to the top. What a beautiful view we saw at the top! We played games, sang songs and then had a picnic there.
We got home at about 5:00 pm. Although we felt tired, we had a great time. I hope I can go there again.
