Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experiences. Keep on reading to know all the amazing power of music.
A recent study suggested that preterm(早产的)babies appeared to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing the pain of preterm babies when experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage often have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help them recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological(神经系统的)disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people, 74 0f whom were musicians. Participants were asked to do some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference got clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music can mend a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or a heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate and reducing anxiety. Listening to quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood and expands blood vessels, thus promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的)system.
1. How does music affect preterm babies
A. It helps reduce their pain.
B. It helps develop their potential in music.
C. It helps improve their hearing systems.
D. It helps repair their neurological systems.
2. What does the underlined phrase "stave off" in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Lead to. B. Increase. C. Prevent. D. Break into.
3. Why can music mend a broken heart
A. Because it has a positive effect on human body systems' work.
B. Because it can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.
C. Because it helps make a person feel optimistic about life.
D. Because it can help patients recover in a slow way.
4. What may be the best title for the text
A. Who can benefit from music

C. The way to choose quality music
D. How music affects our mind and body

Diana Ross, American pop singer and actress, achieved international popularity, first as the lead singer of the Supremes and later as a solo(独唱的)artist. Diana Ross was bom on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children of Fred and Ernestine Ross, who lived in one of Detroit's poor districts. Because her family were closely connected with each other, Ross almost didn't notice the difficult life as she grew up.
Ross's professional career began in 1959, when she joined several neighbourhood friends to form the Primettes. The group was renamed the Supremes after signing a recording contract(合同)with Motown the following year. The group produced many number-one hit singles(热门单曲)on the US Billboard Hot 100, including Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love and Someday We'll Be Together. In 1967, the group was renamed Diana Ross & the Supremes, foreshadowing(预示)Ross's solo career, which she started in 1970.
Beginning with Ain't No Mountain High Enough from her first solo album, Ross enjoyed more than ten years of great success with her hit singles. Ross also developed a film-acting career in the 1970s, beginning with a starring role as jazz singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues and continuing with Mahogany, for which she also recorded the theme song Do You Know Where You're Going To.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ross saw her career begin to wane. Most of her albums were re-recordings of earlier material. In 2006, she produced I Love You, a collection of love songs by many artists, and she started an energetic concert tour the following year to make the album publicly known. In your life, sometimes you may be asked to speak in front of a large group of people. Although it sounds a little scary, even those with stage fright can speak successfully with adequate preparations.
Practice your speech before the big day. 1 If possible, practice the speech in front of a friend or a family member to get used to saying it to real people. If you feel you must have note cards, limit the number to about three. This will force you to keep your speech concise and help you keep your eyes focusing on your audience.
Remember why you've been invited to speak. If you're battling with the fear of speaking to a large group of people, keep your mind on the fact that you were selected for this important role. The speech organizers must have seen something valuable in you or your expertise. 2
Remember that the fear of public speaking is very common. 3 Most of the people in the audience would feel the same fear and stress as you do in your position. Knowing this may make you feel better.
4 What you say should be tailored to why you're there and who you're speaking to in order to avoid sounding general. If speaking to a charity group, mention the good work specific individuals have done for the cause. If speaking at a business conference, briefly state why you want to help these people.
Keep eye contact with the crowd. 5 Pick one person in each section and look at him while you're speaking. After each important point in your speech, switch your focus to another section. When you focus only on one person at a time, the size of the crowd isn't so frightening.
A. A good memory is really helpful.
B. Show appreciation to your audience.
C. Mention your audience in your speech.
D. The more you have it memorized, the better.
E. In fact, it's normal to feel nervous or anxious before a big speech.
F. Separate the crowd into three sections mentally as you get up to speak.
G. The knowledge of other people's respect for you should reduce some of the fear.
