Ninety years ago a man named Howard Carter made a great find. But he didn't discover an unknown people group or a new plant. He found the resting place of a king.
People had seen signs of King Tutankhamun's tomb (坟墓) but had never found it. Finally, Carter's team discovered a set of steps that led down to some underground rooms. There Carter found the king's body and many of his treasures.
Carter recorded his first impression in his popular book, The Tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amen:
At first I could see nothing, the hot air coming from the room causing the candle light to flicker (闪烁), but later, as my eyes grew used to the light, details of the room within appeared slowly and clearly, strange animals and gold-everywhere the light of gold I was struck speechless with amazement, and when Lord Carnarvon, unable to stand the silence any longer, asked anxiously, "Can you see anything " it was all I could do to get out the words, "Yes, wonderful things."
The discovery has made King Tutankhamun, Tut for short, one of the best-remembered kings of Egypt. Tut became king when he was only 9 years old and ruled ancient Egypt from 1332 to 1323 B. C. No one is sure why, but he died suddenly before he turned 20. Because he died so young, there wasn't time to prepare a great tomb for him. So he ended up with a smaller tomb. Its small size was actually the reason why it stayed hidden for so long. And, Tut's tomb was not like other Egyptian kings'-it was not as damaged by time or robbers as other tombs. King Tut's tomb remains the best-kept royal (皇室的) tomb ever discovered. The discovery of this little tomb has helped people learn a great deal about ancient Egypt.
4. We can learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2 that ____.

B. there were a lot of treasures in Tut's tomb

6. What do we know about King Tut
A. He died of a strange disease.
B. He ruled Egypt for about nine years.
C. He is known to few people today.
D. He built his own tomb over a long time.
7. What's the text mainly about
A. King Tut's story.

It was dinner time for the Rangers, a group of Indigenous (本地的) Australians who had spent a long day cleaning up the polluted beaches of the continent's northern coast. Soon they would be eating freshly caught fish and seafood cooked under the stars on an open fire, as their ancestors did.
The Rangers are of more than 100 indigenous groups spreading across Australia who have taken on the job of protecting the land of their forefathers. In Arnhem Land, they are the protectors of 3,300 square miles of land and sea. They comb the beaches by hand, picking up as much rubbish as possible. The task is very difficult as each day it delivers waves of new rubbish.
For the Rangers, cleaning the beaches is more than a vacation. For a people whose culture is strongly tied to the land, protecting the environment is equal to preserving their history.
However, colonization forcefully broke their connection to the land generations ago. Indigenous people were displaced and their cultural practices were outlawed. Tens of thousands of years of traditional land management ended, and as a result many parts of the country now face serious disasters from invasive plants and animal species, bush fires and land mismanagement.
In recent years, the government has restored more than 20 percent of Australia's land to Indigenous owners. Since 2007, the Indigenous Rangers Organizations have been protecting this land.
Luckily, one of the few non-Indigenous employees working with the Rangers, said the combination, new techniques and an appreciation for the culture of Indigenous workers have been critical to the program's success.
"You are working with staff who see the world different to you, so there is a much higher focus on the cultural aspects of work and life," he said.
"Being a ranger is a source of confidence. You feel strong," said Terence, a senior ranger. "Here we still live on the land. The culture is still alive."
8. What did Indigenous Australians live on in the past
A. Rubbish picked up by hand.
B. Protecting the land.
C. Catching the fish and seafood.
D. Invasive plants and animals.
9. What do the Rangers think of cleaning the beaches
A. It's a job of their ancestors'.
B. It's just a vacation.
C. It's a difficult task.
D. It's their culture.
10. Why has the government restored the land to Indigenous owners
A. The polluted land needs better management.
B. Their cultural practices were outlawed.
C. The people were too strong.
D. The land belongs to them.
11. What can we learn from the last three paragraphs
A. Not many employees are Indigenous Australians.
B. Culture is important to the Indigenous Australians.
C. Their new techniques are successful.
D. Both Luck and Terence are rangers.
Soon they would be eating freshly caught fish and seafood cooked under the stars on an open fire,as their ancestors did可知,他们像他们的祖先一样,在星空下吃着篝火煮熟的新鲜的鱼和海鲜。
For 8 people whose culture is strongly tied to the land, protecting the environment is equal to preserving their history.
Tens of thousands of years of traditional land management ended, and as a result many parts of the country now face serious disasters from invasive plants and animal species, bush fires and land mismanagement.
Luckily, one of the few non-lndigenous employees working with the Rangers, said the combination, new techniques and an appreciation for the culture of Indigenous workers have been critical to the program's success.和第七段“You are working with staff who see the world different to you, so there is a much higher focus on the cultural aspects of work and life,”he said. The culture is still alive.

Plants cannot run or hide,so they need other strategies to avoid being eaten. Some curl up their leaves, others produce chemicals to make themselves taste bad if they sense animals drooling on them, chewing them up or laying eggs on them—all signals of an attack.New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive(先发制人的) defense that even works against other pest species.
When ecologist John Orrock of the University of Wisconsin-Madison sprayed snail slime—a liquid the animals release as they slide along—onto soil, nearby tomato plants appeared to notice. They increased their levels of an enzyme(酶),which is known to prevent plant-eating animals.“None of the plants were ever actually attacked,”Orrock says.“We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry.”
Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning’s impact on another potential threat. The investigators found that hungry caterpillars(毛虫),which usually eat tomato leaves greedily, had no appetite for them after the plants were exposed to snail slime and activated their chemical resistance.“This nonspecific defense may be a strategy that benefits the plants by further improving their overall possibilities of survival,”says Orrock, who reported the results with his colleagues in March in Oecologia.
The finding that a snail’s approach can cause a plant response that affects a different animal made Richard Karban curious,a plant communications expert, who was not involved in the study.“It is significant that the plants are responding before being damaged and that these cues are having such far-ranging effects,” Karban says. The research was comprehensive,he adds, but he wonders how the tomato plants felt chemicals in snail slime that never actually touched them.
“That’s the million-dollar question,”Orrock says.He hopes future research will make out the mechanisms that enable plants to sense these relatively distant cues.
12.John Orrock sprayed a liquid onto soil near tomato plants to .
A.make them grow better
B.give them a warning
C.keep plant-eating animals away
D.inform plant-eating animals of danger
13.Why is the example of caterpillars mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.To introduce another animal.
B.To confirm the result of the study.
C.To appeal to people to protect animals.
D.To analyze different resistance chemicals.
14.What does Richard Karban really want to know
A.How tomato plants become aware of danger.
B.What the chemicals in the snail slime are.
C.Whether the research is of practical value.
D.What the finding of the research is.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Watchful Plants
B.Greedy Animals
C.A Snail’s Approach
D.A Defense Attack

Dear Jack,
I'm sorry to hear that you feel lonely in the new school, because you find hard to make friends. Now, I'd like to offer you any advice.

I believe you will be able to make new friends soon unless you're friendly to the others.
I hope the suggestion above will be helpful to you and everything will be fine with you for the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
in the future意为“在将来”,故应用介词in。

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car.
Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. "What are you doing " I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared-empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, "Do you know someone there " She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers " She smiled slightly, "I gave them to the receptionist." "What " She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn't gotten any in a while."
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, "Did you leave your name " To this she answered instantly, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me."
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
We were worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed me what the random action of kindness could mean to the people who received it. While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired.
Paragraph 2:
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.Unit 4 HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
