A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar ”
The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase(公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis.” Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.
I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.
“All right then,” I said. “Okay, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands. Every student would yell. “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”
A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the topic of deep disappointment.

The Queen’s English is now sounding less upper-class, a scientific study of the Queen’s Christmas broadcasts had found. Researchers have studied each of her messages to the Commonwealth countries since 1952 to find out the change in her pronunciation from the noble Upper Received to the Standard Received.
Jonathan Harrington, a professor at Germany’s University of Munich, wanted to discover whether accent (口音) changes recorded over the past half century would take place within one person. “As far as I know, there just is nobody else for whom there is this sort of broadcast records,” he said.
He said the noble way of pronouncing vowels (元音) had gradually lost ground as the noble upper-class accent over the past years. “Her accent sounds slightly less noble than it did 50 years ago. But these are very, very small and slow changes that we don’t notice from year to year. ”
“We may be able to relate it to changes in the social classes,” he told The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper. “In 1952 she would have been heard saying ‘thet men in the bleck het’. Now it would be ‘that man in the black hat’. And ‘hame’ rather than ‘home’. In the 1950s she would have been ‘lost’, but by the 1970s ‘lost’. ”
The Queen’s broadcast is a personal message to the Commonwealth countries. Each Christmas, the 10-minute broadcast is put on TV at 3 pm in Britain as many families are recovering from their traditional turkey lunch.
The results were published in the Journal of Phonetics.
63. The Queen’s broadcasts were chosen for the study mainly because _________.
A. she has been Queen for many years B. she has a less upper-class accent now
C. her speeches are familiar to many peopleD. her speeches have been recorded for 50 years
64. Which of the following is an example of a less noble accent in English
A. “Duaty”. B. “Citee”. C. “Hame”. D. “Lorst”.
65. We may infer from the passage that the Journal of Phonetics is a magazine on _________.
A. speech sounds B. Christmas customsC. TV broadcastingD. personal messages
66. What is the passage mainly about
A. The relationship between accents and social classes.
B. The Queen’s Christmas speeches on TV.
C. The changes in a person’s accent.
D. The recent development of the English language.

The king was about to do so when an old servant of the king said, “Wait, my king. I know an old man who lives in the forest. He is a much greater archer. Let this young man go to him and learn from him for at least three years. ”
The man could not believe that there could be a greater archer than him, but he went and found the old man and he was! For three years he learned from him. Then one day, when he thought he had learned everything, the thought arose in him, “If I kill this old man, then I will be the greatest archer.”
The old man had gone to cut wood and he was coming back carrying wood on his shoulder. The young man hid behind a tree, waiting to kill him. He shot an arrow. The old man took a small piece of wood and threw it. It struck the arrow and the arrow turned back and wounded the young man badly. The old man came, took out the arrow and said, “I knew that some day or other you were going to do this. That’s why I have not taught you this secret. There is no need to kill me. My master is still alive, and I’m nothing better than him. It would take you at least thirty years to learn from him. Actually, one can never be the greatest.”

In the evening, after waiting in the noisy airport building, I was glad to be sitting in the plane. In a few minutes we would soon be up in the sky on our flight home.
But I had been mistaken. Ten minutes later, instead of enjoying the beauty of the evening sky from above the clouds, I was sitting in a smoke-filled room with an airline official and a policeman at my side. On the table in front of me was my suitcase.
The officials were polite. They asked me to show my passport, my ticket and my baggage check. Then I was requested to open my suitcase and to spread out its contents on the table. II. Summary Writing
Once a great young archer asked the king to declare him as the greatest archer of the country. But he was advised to learn from the greater archer, an old man in the forest. And he did so. Three years later, to become the greatest archer, he shot an arrow at the old man, but the old man threw a small piece of wood to strike the arrow. Instead of hurting the old man, the arrow wounded himself badly. The old man said that there was no need killing him because his master was a greater archer alive than him.
III. Guided Writing
Hairdressing is the art of arranging the hair or otherwise modifying its natural state. Hairdressing has been an important part of the dress of both men and women since ancient time and, like dress, serves a number of functions.
Men’s hair in the 20th century was generally simple and short, even to the point of the brush-like crew cut, and most men were clean shaven. In the 1960’s a part of young people started a trend toward longer hair and side beards to suit their unconventional clothes. Some went to wild-looking extremes; others chose moderate, clean and tidy styles to the nape of the neck, shaved to make the shape of the head look nice. Such styles were created or copied in the newly established men’s hairdressing salons that offered scissor or razor cuts, lotions, drying in nets, hairspray, and coloring.
