or something contrary to facts.

We can also put should, were, and had at the beginning of an unreal conditional sentence. In this case, if is not needed any more.

假设条件从句谓语动词发生的时间与主句所假设的谓语动词不一致，叫做错综条件虚拟语气。主句和从句的谓语动词要依照假设的时间而定。

If you had gone to see the doctor yesterday, you would be all right now.
