Over the years, Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, has studied such things as how far Americans typically drive to buy food, how many times we refill our plates at all-you-can-eat buffets and how we organize our kitchens. In the mid-2000s he famously coined the phrase “mindless eating” (and wrote a book by that name) to focus attention on all the bad dietary decisions we make without really thinking about them.
His new book, Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life, aims to change the design of restaurants, school lunchrooms, office cafeterias and homes so that the mindless choices we make will be more healthful ones. Some examples:
Keep kitchen counters clear. No visible snack food, no bread, no nuts — not even breakfast cereal. In Wansink’s research, “women who had even one box of breakfast cereal that was visible — anywhere in their kitchen — weighed 21 pounds more than their neighbor who didn’t.”
Trick yourself into drinking less wine. “We tend to focus on the height of what we pour and not the width, so we pour 12 percent less wine into taller wineglasses than we pour into wider wineglasses.” And the shape of the glass is not the only variable that affects how much we drink. Wansink writes: “Because red wine is easier to see than white wine, we pour 9 percent less red wine whenever we pour a glass.”
Wansink said his researchers also found that people ate less at restaurants when sitting in well-lighted areas near windows and doors, than in darker areas or in the back. They ate less if they were offered a doggie bag, or to-go box, before they got their meals: apparently the idea of getting a “free” second meal outweighed the impulse (冲动) to clean their plates. Workers who frequently ate at their desks weighed 15.4 pounds less, on average, than those who didn’t. Fruits and vegetables kept on the top shelf of the refrigerator were eaten at higher rates than those on lower shelves.
The point, Wansink says, is to consider findings like those and change your environment or habits. Then you won’t have to think about it: You’ll just eat less.
19. Why did Brian Wansink write Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life
A. Because he wanted people to become thin.
B. Because he intended to help people eat more healthily.
C. Because he hoped to coin a new phrase “mindless earing”.
D. Because he wished to change the design of dining places.
20. According to Wansink, which of the following affects the amount of wine we drink
A. The shape of wineglasses. B. The color of wineglasses.
C. The taste of wine. D. The quality of wine.
21. The underlined phrase a “doggie bag” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. a bag for carrying B. a box for takeaway food
C. a bag for carrying dog food D. a container for leftovers
22. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Changing environment or eating habits will help you eat less.
B. Eating fruits and vegetables is better for your health.
C. Keeping your kitchen counter clear of any food will help make you thin.
D. Many people eat or drink too much without paying attention to it.
C
It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into the Third World War. She’ll talk about my lack of (缺乏) bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major (主修) in English, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son ” she shouts all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to say except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve something because of loving it, not because of fame or salary.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes back home around 5:00 pm or even 6:00 pm.
However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.
23. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean
A. The author’s mother argued about something angrily with him.
B. The author’s mother expressed different opinions on the war.
C. The author’s mother liked talking with him but got angry easily.
D. The author’s mother quite disagreed about what to eat for dinner.
24. Why does the author’s mother mention her co-worker’s son
A. To persuade the author to become a doctor.
B. To tell the author to learn as hard as he can.
C. To encourage the author to receive a scholarship.
D. To ask the author to earn much more money.
25. What makes the author’s mother worried about his major
A. Her plans for future. B. Her need to control.
C Her poor knowledge. D. Her struggle with life.
26. What can be inferred from the text
A. The author will become an engineer as his mother wishes.
B. Being a scientist is sure to earn high fame and salary.
C. The author may choose major according to his interest.
D. The author shows little interest in learning English.
D
Robots that can cook are in growing demand(需求)in the United States. The increased demand comes at a time when restaurants are trying to put some distance between their workers and customers during the COVID-19.
In a few weeks, White Castle restaurants will test a robot arm that can cook French fries and other foods. The robot, called Flippy, is a product of Miso Robotics, a company based in Pasadena, California.
Robot food service was becoming popular even before the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒). Hospitals, college dining areas and other places tried to meet demand for food while keeping labor costs low. Robot chefs appeared at places like Creator, a restaurant in San Francisco. Now, some say, robots may become necessary for the food service industry. "I expect in the next two years you will see much more robotic adoption(采纳)in the food space because of COVID-19," Jain said.
Some peoples say, robots can lower the demand for labor. At the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, cafe workers used to spend six hours per day making salads, notes Tonya Johnson, the school's director of nutrition services. But two years ago, the university added a Sally, a kind of robot that now makes around 40 salads per day. By adding Sally, the school was able to cut a job opening in its cooking staff, Johnson said. "I think the pandemic has made us realize how much we need more equipment like Sally," Johnson said.
Miso Robotics co-founder and chief Buck Jordan said fast food restaurants are already having trouble finding workers, partly as a result of a losing population of young workers. Jordan added that his company's position is that "automation(自动化)is not a choice". He added, "You must automate in order to survive in the future."
27. Why is robot food service becoming popular
A. It can take the place of human beings in the future.
B. It can shorten the distance between workers and customers.
C. It can meet the demand for food and reduce the cost of labor.
D. It can make all kinds of delicious food in a very short time.
28. What does Johnson say about Sally
A. It is just a common robot like others. B. It is useless to improve the speed of work.
C. It makes as many salads as workers. D. It helps the school employ fewer workers.
29. What's Jordan's attitude to automation
A. Worried. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
30. What is the text mainly about
A. The popularity of robots in the food space.
B. The reason for choosing robots in restaurants.
C. More demand for robot cooks in US restaurants.
D. The difficulties in finding enough labor workers.

【答案】27. C 28. D 29. B 30. C

Other values include devoting to religion, taking risks, spending time with family, and helping others.
Before making a career decision, you can ask yourself what is most important to you and examine your beliefs to better know your values. How to Be Productive During Difficult Times
When we are struggling, or when we have a hard time focusing, we may turn to others for help. We may even wish we had a hero to help us. Well, today here is some advice for you.
Turn ourselves into our own heroes.
When we make ourselves heroes, we not only gain focus but also a sense of purpose. ____35____ For example, it can give us hope as stories in the books often do. In stories, writers often give their hero, the main person in the story, a purpose. ____36____
Write out our tasks and ideas.
In stories, heroes also have tasks, which they want to finish and ideas, which they see for themselves. So we can write out our tasks and ideas, not just for a project but for our life as well. With clear tasks and ideas, events in our life no longer seem to be separate events. ____37____ There's just a lot of value in having tasks and ideas.
____38____ When we know our strengths, we can use them fully. In difficult times, we can make our life easier by focusing on our strengths. It is even more important to identify weaknesses. All heroes have them. On their journey they face their weaknesses and learn from them.
Have small goals within a larger goal.
As we know, the hero's journey is not a one—time thing. It is a journey we are on in our entire life. ____39____ Our life's journey is ongoing and ever—changing. We should be realistic with our goals and to be kind to ourselves, especially during difficult times.
