It was an afternoon in August. I was just short of turning eighteen. I stood in front of a six story high, red brick building. It was to be my new home for the next several years. I was a bit scared, unsettled and thrilled at the same time. I had two suitcases and a bag with me. In them were packed all of my clothes, towels, sheets, alarm clock and everything else I thought I would need. I carried them upstairs and then threw them on my bed. I looked around the room wondering what life had in store for me.
It was another afternoon in August. I was just short of turning forty two. My daughter was eighteen and we were standing in front of the same building. I smiled as I helped her carry her things up to her room but I also noticed that my wife and I were making more than one trip. All of the students not just my daughter seemed to have so much more stuff than I did all those years ago. Yet, it didn’t seem to make things any better for them. In fact, they looked more stressed than I remembered being on my first day there. At that moment, I wondered what life had in store for my daughter.
Last night I had a dream that I have had many times before. I was back in that same room with my belongings piled on my bed searching for my course book and wondering what classes I would take. I often wondered what this dream meant but when I woke up this morning it became crystal clear to me. We are sometimes teachers in the life, but we are always students in it. We are here taking the most important class ever. We are here to learn to love ourselves. We are here to learn to love everyone as ourselves. And it takes a lifetime. The stuff we carry with us through this life doesn’t matter at all either. It is the stuff we carry inside of us when we leave this life that really counts.
24. What do the author and her daughter had in common
A. They were admitted into the same college.
B. They brought equally heavy stuff to the dormitory.
C. They had a shared accommodation with their friends.
D. They both wondered what life would be like in the future.
25. What can we infer about the dream from the last paragraph
A. The author used to be a teacher.
B. The dream implied something mysterious .
C. The love of everyone really matters.
D. The inside of us is more important.
26. Which of the following best describes the author as a father
A. Generous. B. Diligent. C. Caring. D. Demanding.
27. How does the author develop the passage
A. By making comparisons B. By analyzing causes.
C. By describing processes. D. By presenting an argument.
C
As the sky darkened, a school bus arrived at the museum’s gate.
A man, in a military uniform with polished medals and ribbons, boarded it and addressed the group of nine-year-olds and their young teacher. “Welcome to Roninom. My name is Major Gerard Rovego. I flew for the Imperial Space Force in the last war. I now look after our country’s greatest spaceships.”
The children had so many questions. “What was it like flying in space ” “An amazing experience! You feel like a bird soaring through the heavens.” The man had never flown in space, nor ever left the ground for that matter.
After a few more questions, the children began to yawn. “Is it time for the Miraz ” a boy asked. They must have heard the stories from the older students at their school.
In the dark oval ship, each child received a personalized ticket along with a pillow and blanket. Wide-eyed, they found their sleeping berths in the roomy cabin. “This is softer than my bed at home,” one girl said after lying down.
“After I graduated from flight school,” the man said, “I piloted ships like the Miraz. Passengers slept in these very berths(舱位)as they travelled to the Moon.”
“Did this ship really go to the Moon ” a boy asked.
“Hundreds of times.” The Miraz had never flown, and the few ships lay there just in an effort to avoid a possible defeat. “Get some rest. Tomorrow I’ll show you all the beautiful spaceships here,” he said.
“Major Rovego.” A girl paused to swallow. “Were you scared in the war ”
The man smiled. “Never. I knew I’d come home one day.” Major Gerard Rovego was killed in action while piloting the Miraz’s sister ship, the Realnos.
The children asleep, the teacher took the man aside. “Thank you so much,” she whispered. “The children will remember this for the rest of their lives. The country must have its heroes, and children should know them.”
Back in his own cabin, the man carefully removed his brother’s uniform. “You probably hate me, Gerard,” the man whispered. “You’d say that children should learn the truth about the war…”
28. What does the man in a military uniform seem to be responsible for
A. The coming kids’ health care. B. The safety of coming visitors.
C. The spaceships in the museum. D. The polished medals and ribbons.
29. According to the old man, what was the Miraz used for
A. A ship for sea travel. B. A ship to fly to space.
C. A ship for visitors to sleep in. D. A ship that he piloted to the Sea.
30. How does the man feel about what he has been doing
A. Unregretful. B. Objective.
C. Appreciative. D. Doubtful.
31. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. The truth about the past war B. A visit to the Imperial Space Force
C. What must remain — a heroic effort D. A brave man — Major Gerard Rovego
D
Believe it or not, nearly a fifth of older adults have contact with friends, family and neighbors less than once a week. In the United Kingdom, that amounts to nearly 9 million residents who are isolated with little social contact. In the United States, a 2019 survey on aging found 8% of older adults living alone who report feelings of loneliness.
●In Somerset, England, the local police found a way to fight social isolation. Local police chose a project that was local, where they could see the change they’d enabled. Their “chat benches” appeared in local parks, where they encourage strollers(散步者) to sit down and have a chat with a random stranger.
“The sign simply helps to break down the invisible, social barriers that exists between strangers who find themselves sharing a common place. We can all play a part…” according to a spokesman for the police department. “Simply stopping to say ‘hello’ to someone at the chat bench could make a huge difference to the vulnerable(易受伤害的) people in our communities and help to make life a little better for them.”
●Some Texans in the United States, are trying to relieve the loneliness and isolation that many elderly Americans are feeling during the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒流行)by creating safe “hugging booths.”
Amber Crenshaw and her husband Steve Crenshaw own a business called Handle With Care and work with Unlimited Care Cottages, an assisted living facility. Amber said she and her husband designed and built the hugging booths after one of the nurses suggested the idea.
"The residents have been, just so filled with joy,” Amber said. “It was one of our resident’s birthdays. We were able to set the booth up for their birthday, and family members were able to come in and give birthday hugs. It has really lifted the spirits of the assisted living residents.”
The Crenshaws have just worked with Unlimited Care so far, but they said other assisted living facilities in Texas have contacted them with interest.
32. What is the finding of the 2019 investigation
A. A majority of old people get in touch with others less than once a week.
B. The number of isolated people who contact with others adds up to 9 million in the UK.
C. 8% of the aged people who suffer from loneliness live on their own in America.
D. There are more people who have little connection with others in the UK than in the USA.
33. Why did the local police in Somerset set up “chat benches” in local parks
A. To remind older adults of the tricks of the cheats.
B. To better the public facilities in the community.
C. To make local people feel closer to each other.
D. To celebrate United Nations World Elder Day.
34. What can be inferred from the case of “hugging booths”
A. Hugging booths play a role in birthday hugs in family members
B. The Crenshaws run a business and an assisted living facility
C. Some nurses first came up with the idea of the “hugging booth”.
D. There’re many assisted living facilities with hugging booths.
35.What’s the purpose of this text
A. To raise people’s awareness of caring lonely seniors.
B. To help protect the people living in the community.
C. To urge family members to hug each other more often.
D. To present the differences between the two methods.

Surveillance (监视) is a fact of life. Your boss is monitoring your performance at work. Supermarkets are collecting data on your grocery shopping. 36.
In a few months, European Union law-makers are due to approve proposals that will make driver assistance systems mandatory (强制的) in cars within three years. All new models of car will come with black boxes (event data recorders), intelligent speed assistance, lane-keeping assistance and more besides.
A large number of technologies will soon be monitoring a driver’s every move. Are we prepared for devices that watch how we drive and try to help us do it better
37. In a report published in April 2038, it found that the suite of changes could save at least 7,300 lives by 2030, and reduce the number of serious injuries from car crashes by 38,900. “We can have the same kind of impact as when safety belts were first introduced,” says Oliver Carsten, who studies transport safety at the University of Leeds, UK.
38. The black box is the most controversial (有争议的) tech because of fears that the tech encourages surveillance. It would be easy to worry about being watched in your car. But the EU rules say the system is only checked in the event of an accident to help with insurance claims and police investigation. The point is to provide for a fair allocation (分配) of responsibility when a crash occurs. Some people choose to have a black box because it can reduce their individual insurance premium (保险费). 39. What’s more, the data collected in human-driven cars will help train automated driving systems to the point that they could be ready for large-scale deployment in the future.
40. Drivers should think of it as an extra layer of protection, rather than the vehicle trying to take over driving from you.
A. Now there is a new field: the automobile.
B. There is concern about these technologies, however.
C. The tech is reducing costs because it’s reducing the number of crashes.
D. Safety isn't much discussed, principally because cars are already very safe.
E. While the EU is taking the boldest steps, these technologies aren't far behind in other parts of the world.
F. As a result, what may at first glance seem like a surveillance technology is actually a benefit for society.
G. The European Commission says that introducing these advanced driver assistance systems will make driving safer.

Being the only child in the family, most teenagers like you grow up lonely, that does harm to our psychological health. However, things will change from now on. I am going to have a sibling to play. I will help my parents looking after my sibling when he/she is born, ensuring that he/she grows up happy with love and affection all around. However, I am afraid that I know little about how to take a good care of a baby and how to set a good example to him/her. I want to get some advices from you but I am looking forward to your early reply.

【范文】
Dear Mom and Dad,
With the College Entrance Examination approaching, I really hope to have a heart-to-heart talk with you!
During the years, I always feel grateful for your unselfish care and love. Thanks to your constant encouragement, I have been making remarkable progress in my studies.
Since it will be less than one month before the exam, I m under great pressure now. I would appreciate it if you can have a frequent talk with me and provide me with timely help, which contributes to my staying in a good state.
I am fully aware of the responsibilities I am shouldering. I have made up my mind to make every effort to study, for I believe hard work is the key to success. Just as the saying goes, "no pains, no gains. " Meanwhile, I will spare some time to participate in sports activities, aiming to build up my body and free myself from the heavy work of studies.
Mom and Dad, I am quite confident about my future. Wish you good health and a happy life.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

W: Let me take a look at your left arm first… Now your right… Your right arm is swollen a little.
M: I think it’s probably broken and I’d like to have an X-ray taken if you think it’s necessary.
W: Yes. Let me take the X-ray for you.
M: Is it serious
W: Oh… I’m happy to tell you that you didn’t break your arm at all. According to the X-ray, it’s not serious.
M: What a pity! If I had broken my arm, I needn’t go to school.

M: Did you watch television last night A violent storm hit South Florida. It’s terrible.
W: No, I didn’t. To tell you the truth, I seldom watch TV.
M: Why
W: There are few programs that I find interesting enough to watch.
M: Well, there are some shows that I will never miss. Don’t you ever watch Star Trek
W: Yes, I watch it now and then but it isn’t something I can’t live without.
M: I am a big fan of it. And every week I expect the coming of Friday night. I love the host and the characters in that program.
W: I know there are some good programs on TV, but there are also many programs which include too much violence in them.
M: I agree with you there.

W: So Peter, what kind of apartment should we get I’m really looking forward to getting a place of our own.
M: Yeah, it will be great thing. Well, I want to find us a nice place, but our salary isn’t very high so we might need to find some place a bit less expensive.
W: The way I figure it, we can both put between 200 and 250 dollars a month into rent. That leaves enough for food and other expenses, right
M: That sounds good. I’m afraid if we spend anything else on housing, we’ll be like living in a rat trap.
W: So we must have a house of one bedroom, a living room for the TV, a bathroom an a little kitchen. Anything else
M: Also, I don’t want to be too far away from downtown. The traffic is just too heavy to get to work. Wouldn’t it be great if we could walk to work every day
W: We’ll see what we can find. Apartments closer to downtown are more expensive.
M: Don’t worry. We certainly can find a good one.

Almost fifty-million Americans have high blood pressure. It’s a kind of dangerous illness which can cause heart disease. Most doctors have long believed that reducing salt can decrease blood pressure. A new American study suggests this is true even when people do not eat the healthiest food. A team in Boston did this study. More than four hundred people took part in the research. Almost half of them had high blood pressure. They all ate food with different amounts of salt. Salt contains sodium. There is strong evidence that sodium affects blood pressure. Half the people ate an average American diet. The study showed that the people who ate healthful food while eating less salt lowered their blood pressure. However, blood pressure decreased for both groups when they ate less salt.
