If you read 1 million words in English, finally you will think in that language. With this
theory in mind, the Gamagori Municipal Library,in Japan, recently started a lending
service for books in English with the purpose of helping people to learn the language
more easily.
The rules are:use no dictionaries while reading;jump over difficult words and
phrases;and stop reading the book if it is too difficult.
According to Sakai a professor at Electro Communications University in Tokyo and
president of the Extensive Reading Association of Japan,if you stick to these rules,
you can get through more than 1 million words with ease. And finally you will think in
English. The method also helps readers enjoy reading books in English rather than
growing to dislike them.
According to Professor Hitoshi Nishizawa at the Toyota National College of
Technology in Japan, four technology colleges have adopted the extensive reading
method. His own college adopted the method for its electric technology English class,
which is held for one hour each week, from the second grade to the fifth grade as well
as in the two year advanced course. And after applying the method, the average
TOEIC score of the college's graduates jumped from 330 to 500,out of 990.
The Gamagori library decided to follow the college's example and lend books for
extensive reading. The library has bought about 1,400 books, which include those
designed for students of English as a second language. The English level is equal to
that of fourth grade primary school students in Britain and the United States. After
meeting this level of English, they can read Harry Potter books in English, according
to the professor.
“The method is effective not only for improving their reading skills, but also for their
hearing ability,” said Nishizawa.
36. According to the theory raised by the Gamagori Library,if the book written in English is too difficult,we ________.
A. can use a dictionary to help us B. can use a reference book to help us
C. can ask others to help us D. needn't read it at all
37. The theory is raised to ________.
A. help readers learn English more easily
B. increase the pleasure of learning English
C. improve the readers' listening ability
D. A,B and C
38. According to the passage,the theory ________.
A. is still a theory B. has been put into practice all over the world
C. will soon be put into practice D. has been carried out in some colleges in Japan

November not only marks the publication of Toni Morrison’s eagerly anticipated (期待) eighth novel,Love, but it is also the tenth anniversary of her Nobel Prize for Literature. Morrison is the first black woman to receive a Nobel, and so honored before her in literature are only two black men:Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian playwright, poet and novelist,in 1986;and Derek Walcott, the Caribbean born poet,in 1992. But Morrison is also the first and only American born Nobel prizewinner for literature since 1962,the year novelist John Steinbeck received the award.
Like Song of Solomon,Love is a multigenerational story, revealing the personal and communal legacy (遗产) of an outstanding black family. As Morrison scholars will tell you,Love is the third volume of a literary master’s trilogy (三部曲) investigating the many complexities of love. This trilogy began with Beloved (1988),which deals with a black mother’s love under slavery and in freedom. Jazzy (1993),the second volume, tells a story of romantic love in 1920s Harlem. This latest novel looks back from the 1970s to the 1940s and 50s.
The emotional center of Love is Bill Cosey, the former owner and host of the shabby Cosey’s Hotel and Resort in Silk,North Carolina, described in the novel as “the best and best known vacation sport for colored folk on the East Coast.” We get to know Cosey through the memories of five women who survive and love him: his granddaughter, his widow, two former employees, and a homeless young girl.
The latest novel,Love, had been described in the promotional material from her publisher as “Morrison’s most accessible work since Song of Solomon.” This comparison to her third novel, published in 1977,was an effective selling point.

A. Toni Morrison’s latest novels. B. Toni Morrison and her trilogy.
C. Toni Morrison and her novel Love. D. Toni Morrison, the Nobel prizewinner.
40. What can we learn about John Steinbeck
A. He was a black writer. B. He was born in America.
C. He received the Nobel Prize after Morrison.
D. He was the first American novelist to win a Nobel.
41. The similarity between Love and Song of Solomon is that they both ________.
A. belong to the same trilogy together with Beloved
B. concern families of more than one generation
C. deal with life of blacks under slavery
D. investigate life in 1920s Harlem

Every day,I needed to wash about 1,000 items of clothing, which was really boring and tiresome. But knowing that it was a good chance to improve myself,I was determined to try my best to complete the job. In the end,I was selected as an excellent volunteer and the 16 days was a once in a life time experience, even if I was only washing clothes.
