At thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs Smith, the doctor said I have attention disorder. I might not be able to do it.” She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn’t finish the writing when the bell rang. I had to take it home. In the quietness of my bedroom, a story suddenly became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he created a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up
I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: See what you can do when you keep trying.

Children experiencing frequent family violence in Guangdong Province will be regarded as victims, according to a local draft (草案) against family violence. The draft will be handed in for consideration and agreement by the People’s Congress.

About 90 percent of family violence victims are women.
“Family violence not only causes broken marriages, but also brings great harm to the development of children’s mental health,” Chen said. “The new draft will also help offenders (违法者) realize they are doing something harmful to children. It will also make governments and social organizations pay more attention to the problem.”

US writer Margaret Lee Runbeck once wrote, “Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” But traveling is not always happy, at least for the two people in the movie Green Book.
The movie was based on the true story of a road trip through the southern US in the early 1960s. In the film, the black pianist Don Shirley hires Italian-American Tony Vallelonga to drive him to perform, but they face problems because of Shirley’s skin color. These problems lead them to form a special friendship.
“There’s something so deeply right about this movie, so true to the time,” wrote US film critic Mick LaSalle at the San Francisco Chronicle. The time LaSalle talked about was between the late 1870s and 1960s, a very different period in US history, when many parts of the country had Jim Crow laws, which allowed racial separation (种族隔离). These laws made life and travel dangerous for African-Americans. They couldn’t use certain hotels, restaurants, or even gas stations. They had to be indoors after sunset or they might go to jail. Even famous black people had to follow the laws.
But in 1936, a black mail carrier named Victor H. Green had an idea. He made a list of friendly businesses in New York City. He published the list as a small book with a green cover. The Green Book helped African-Americans travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow laws went away. The book went away, too. Today many US people still remember the time of Jim Crow, but they probably don’t know about the Green Book. Thanks to this movie, maybe people can remember it again.
32.What can be known about the movie Green Book
A. It focuses on friendship. B. It tells a happy travel in the southern US.
C. It shows the racial problem in US history. D. It mainly describes a black pianist’s special life.
33.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A. Start a new topic for discussion. B. Introduce the origin of the movie.
C. Summarize the first two paragraphs. D. Provide some background information.
34.What does the underlined word “jail” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Bed. B. Prison. C. Station. D. Church.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.US people think highly of the Green Book today.
B. Jim Crow laws went away because of the Green Book.
C. The Green Book is a good guide for foreigners traveling in America.
D. Victor H. Green made a great contribution to African-Americans.

that can be answered by words, but by the actual action. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (胆小鬼), and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn’t think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in accepting misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. Since Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Every day after school, Ronny and his new friends didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

W: So did I. After all, it’s a new one. It’s our own house. That’s what really matters. Is that right Let’s put the chairs in front of the fireplace.
M: Um, but we should first consider where to put the bed. It is the biggest.
W: Well, let’s put it over there. And the chairs near the window.
M: All right. Then you can draw and I can read by the window.

W: Oh, Mike, you look so tired.
M: I was up all night, trying to get ready for my chemistry test this morning.
W: Any idea about how you did on it
M: Yeah. Professor Porter has already put grades on her door, and I... Well, I could have done better.
W: That really surprises me. You know so much about science.
M: Yeah, well, it’s not surprising to me. I know the material well, but when it comes to taking tests, I never do well.
W: You should consider taking some courses at the Study Skills Center. Last year, I took a course from them on how to do research on the Internet, and another one on writing term papers. They were really useful.
M: What other kinds of courses do they offer
W: They also have a class on test-taking skills.
M: Wow, that’s exactly what I want. I should go there now and try to talk to someone.
W: You can go there tomorrow. Right now, you should go back to your house and catch up on your sleep.
M: I think you’re right.

W: One day, Murphy went to a doctor to talk about his wife. He said to the doctor, “Doctor, I think my wife is deaf because she never hears me the first time and I always have to say things again and again.” “Well,” the doctor answered, “go home and stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her. If she doesn’t answer, move about 5 feet closer and say it again. Keep doing this so that we’ll get an idea about how serious her deafness is.”
Sure enough, Murphy went home and did exactly as the doctor told him. He stood about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she was cutting some vegetables and said, “Betty, what’s for dinner ” He heard no answer. He moved about 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He moved 5 feet closer. Still no answer. He got fed up and moved right behind her, about an inch away, and asked again, “Betty, what’s for dinner ” Betty said, “That’s the fourth time you asked me. They are meatballs.”
